The Thirty Meter telescope (TMT) is a massive international undertaking with a myriad of software packages delivered by partners around the world. The Executive software (ESW) package is the part of the TMT software system that is responsible for providing unified high-level control of observatory operations. It consists of five parts: a) a Sequencer Component that can be tailored to various sequencing needs by the loading of custom "scripts", written in a TMT sequencing Domain Specific Language (DSL);b) a collection of these sequencing scripts used for critical observing tasks such as acquisition;c) user interface (UI) infrastructure that provides browser-based UI standards and access to TMT components and services;d) the set of Uts that observatory staff will use during operations to conduct TMT activities such as observing;and e) tools that assist in the visualization of observation data for quality assurance. In this paper, we describe the design of ESW, and give an update on the current status of the package, which is currently under construction.

The VIRUS2 instrument is a highly multiplexed Integral Field fiber-fed array of six spectrographs destined for the McDonald Observatory's Harlan J. Smith 2.7-meter telescope atop Mt. Locke in far West Texas. Each unit consists of a CCD mosaic spanning a common spatial subaperture and four spectral channels. Six independent cryostats house the twenty-four CCDs. Each set of four CCDs, and related thermal environment, is monitored and controlled via Archon CCD controller, Arduino environmental sensor array and relays, and a set of Linux processes hosted on a dedicated off-the-shelf single board computer. The business logic layer rests on libraries derived from the Hobby-Eberly telescope (HET) control system framework and adapted for Node-Red enabling rapid-prototyping and deployment of engineering dashboards. We describe the status of the VIRUS2 project in the context of software and controls along with the evolution of the HET APIs for migration toward standard IOT technologies.

The Observatorio Astrofisico de Javalambre (OAJ(+1)) in Spain is a young astronomical facility, conceived and developed from the beginning as a fully automated observatory with the main goal of optimizing the processes in the scientific and general operation of the Observatory. The OAJ has been particularly conceived for carrying out large sky surveys with two unprecedented telescopes of unusually large fields of view (FoV): the JST/T250, a 2.55m telescope of 3deg field of view, and the JAST/T80, an 83cm telescope of 2deg field of view. The most immediate objective of the two telescopes for the next years is carrying out two unique photometric surveys of several thousands square degrees, J-PAS(+2) and J-PLUS+3, each of them with a wide range of scientific applications, like e.g. large structure cosmology and Dark Energy, galaxy evolution, supernovae, Milky Way structure, exoplanets, among many others. To do that, JST and JAST are equipped with panoramic cameras under development within the J-PAS collaboration, JPCam and T80Cam respectively, which make use of large format (similar to 10k x 10k) CCDs covering the entire focal plane. This paper describes in detail, from operations point of view, a comparison between the detailed cost of the global automation of the Observatory and the standard automation cost for astronomical facilities, in reference to the total investment and highlighting all benefits obtained from this approach and difficulties encountered. The paper also describes the engineering development of the overall facilities and infrastructures for the fully automated observatory and a global overview of current status, pinpointing lessons learned in order to boost observatory operations performance, achieving scientific targets, maintaining quality requirements, but also minimizing operation cost and human resources.

Due to lack of electricity, many communities in India employ fossil fuel-based water pumping systems for irrigation. Due to the dangerous greenhouse gases they release, fossil fuels seriously impact the ecosystem. In this study, a solar energy-based automated water pumping system is suggested that can be deployed in many villages. The automatic system only activates the water pumps when the soil moisture content falls below a specific level, as measured by the moisture sensors positioned across the fields. This paper describes the advanced development on controlling and operating solar water pumps using the internet and messaging control for turning ON and OFF. The main aim of this type of system is to make it user-friendly, reliable, easy to handle and more efficient so that people can use it easily without facing any difficulty. This system saves electricity, produces a pollution- free environment, and also reduces the running cost. In this research work, modelling of an MPPT based solar water pump system is done in proteus software, which focuses on controlling the MPPT output power and switching of the solar pump. The Hill Climbing (HC) algorithm based MPPT is designed, which is coupled with a boost converter for obtaining high solar energy output. The overall output of the system is controlled by the Arduino programming based controller for automatic switching of solar pump.

The Giant Magellan telescope project is proceeding with design, fabrication, and site construction. The first two 8.4m primary mirror segments have been completed and placed in storage, three segments are in various stages of grinding and polishing, the sixth segment is in the initial stages of casting, and glass is in hand to cast the seventh segment. An industry contract is in place to complete the design and proceed with fabrication of the telescope structure. Residence buildings and other facilities at the Las Campanas site in Chile are complete. Hard rock excavation of the foundations for the enclosure and telescope pier is complete. Preliminary design of the enclosure has been completed and final design is underway. Seismic isolation system bearings have been tested. A primary mirror segment test cell that will be used to qualify control system components and software is being fabricated. Prototyping continues in several areas, including on-telescope wavefront sensing and control elements, telescope laser metrology, and a subscale Adaptive Secondary Mirror (ASM). Adaptive optics and phasing testbeds are under development. Construction activities were delayed by the global coronavirus pandemic, but work has now resumed.

Gran Telescopio Canarias (GTC), featuring a 10,4 meters segmented primary mirror, is nowadays the largest optical and infra-red telescope in operation since it started its scientific production in 2009. GTC operation is enabled by the GTC control System (GCS), a large, complex, real-time distributed system, which coordinates manifold hardware and software components. A custom script-based toolchain was written to support developing and building software components for GCS, and it's also responsible for packaging new releases and development kits for instrument builders as a whole. Thus, continuous integration process is heavy and release deployments are cumbersome. In order to break such allocation monolith, an initiative is under way to rethink GCS building and deployment procedures to use more modern, commonly available and extensible tools. Using tools as CMake, Conan and rpm it's possible to leverage existing components and their dependencies in building and deployment time, so component tailored deployments will be possible. This modular approach to build and deploy GCS will reduce release cycle times and invested effort. Finally, taking advantage of this proven control system for new telescopes makes sense, as several common high level telescope operations work pretty much the same. As a project's positive side effect, new telescopes could take the GCS components useful for them and just develop new components for specific elements not found at GTC (e.g.: instruments, actuators, ...), and even contribute improvements beneficial to all parties. This paper reports on the current status of the project, challenges found, decisions made, milestones reached and future steps.

The wide field survey telescope (WFST) is a 2.5 meter optical telescope that is currently under construction in China Designed with a large field of view (FOV) of 3 degrees in diameter and equipped with a 0.75 gigapixel mosaic CCD camera, the telescope will be mainly used for high sensitivity time-domain imaging surveys across the northern sky. The optical design for WFST features an advanced primary-focus assembly (PFA) housing five corrector lenses, an atmospheric dispersion corrector, filters of six bands, and the CCD camera. Stray light rejection performance is crucial for WFST to achieve an optimal sensitivity and maximize its scientific outputs. The primary-focus geometry of WFST helps to reduce the celestial background compared with a Cassegrain geometry, but the wide FOV imposes additional difficulty in stray light control and suppression. In this paper, the stray light behavior of WFST is carefully modeled by establishing a detailed opto-mechanical model of the telescope, assigning proper surface properties, and launching ray tracing simulations for a variety of scenarios. Important stray light paths including ghost effect and first-order scatterings are identified. Stray light mitigation measures including baffle and mask designs are proposed and optimized based on the stray light analysis results, which show promising suppression capability.

Intelligent learning and adaptation allow cognitive radios (CRs) to maximise available spectrum while maintaining stable connections. Cognitive radio technology may detect unused channels of radio frequency space via a process called “spectrum sensing," and then get rapid and easy access to such channels. An important aspect of CR technology is spectrum sensing, which allows CRs to detect gaps in the spectrum. It’s the practise of keeping tabs on a certain radio spectrum band on a regular and changing basis to see if there are any interference issues that might prevent its utilisation. Noise power and signal fading in a wireless channel have a significant impact on the efficiency of spectrum sensing techniques in noisy situations. Another difficulty for sensing algorithms involving a single secondary user is the dilemma of a hidden main user in shadowed areas. Algorithms for cooperative spectrum sensing must take into account a number of aspects, including sensing time, speed, cooperation overheads, and decision fusion methods. In order to provide efficient and adaptable IoT networking, many wireless technologies have emerged in recent years. One of the primary technologies that provides opportunistic connection to a wide variety of interconnected IoT devices is cognitive radio (CR), which makes software-defined radio possible. An unmanaged and unregulated invasion of privacy through low-powered wireless sensors into the Internet of Things (IoT). The output of such networks is dependent on the main consumer’s observed spectrum pattern because of the networks’ opportunistic nature.

We present the IBIS2.0 project, which aims to upgrade and to install the Interferometric BIdimensional Spectrometer at the solar Vacuum Tower telescope (Tenerife, Spain) after its disassembling from the Dunn Solar telescope (New Mexico, USA). The instrument is undergoing a hardware and software revision that will allow it to perform new spectropolarimetric measurements of the solar atmosphere at high spatial, spectral and temporal resolution in coordination with other ground- and space-based instruments. Here we present the new opto-mechanical layout and control system designed for the instrument, and describe future steps.

The Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA) employs an airborne telescope with a 2.7 m primary mirror. The telescope structure is composed of carbon fibre with major parts of steel for the suspension and balancing components. It is exposed to harsh environmental conditions and subject to vibration excitation due to aircraft motions and turbulence from the airflow coming into the telescope cavity. To meet pointing requirements and improve image stability there are ongoing efforts on various components of the telescope system, one of which is the implementation of an Active Mass Damping (AMD) control system: Based on accelerometer signals, reaction mass actuators impose forces onto the support structure to dampen the vibration of optical components. The system has been designed, implemented and preliminary tested in the early years of SOFIA's scientific operation, but concerns about the structural integrity of the primary mirror and new requirements regarding software qualification have prevented the activation and further development for several years. These concerns being addressed, we are now in the process of reactivating the AMD system on the support structure of the primary mirror. Recent ground tests and in-flight jitter measurements indicate that the damping system is very efficient at eliminating the excitation of targeted structural modes of the telescope structure at 40 to 80 Hz and the first bending modes of the primary mirror at 175 Hz, resulting in a significantly improved image quality. This paper presents the analysis of those measurements and discusses options for future development.
