After more than 4 years of operation it's expected that the Gemini Planet Imager (GPI) will move from Gemini South (GS) to the Gemini North (GN) telescope sometime in 2019. Though both telescopes are almost identical at a hardware and software level there are subtle differences. With the accrued knowledge from operations from both a software and hardware point of view we will be addressing the following subjects: Changes in software on the telescope control level to interface with the similar system at GN, changes in the user interface for both instrument operation, proposal management, and observation preparations by a PI. Adjustments and requirements to interface at a hardware level with cooling and power requirements, and changes in the hardware configuration of network interfaces. We also show the results from vibration measurements at both telescopes and these measurements indicate that the vibrations will not be an issues when moving from GS to GN. Using more than 600h of observations and performance measurements and weather conditions at GS, and correlating with several years of weather monitoring at Mauna Kea we show what improvements in performance we can expect. We expect a significant improvement in performance due to the less turbulent atmosphere at GN, with post-processed contrast improving by a factor of 1.3-2.6.

The recently reinvented Hobby-Eberly telescope (HET) has undergone a multi-year upgrade replacing the wide-field corrector, tracker, and metrology systems. The timelines for the production and delivery of the various upgrade components, combined with the desired turn around on deployment and integration, required that a majority of the core control system software functionality be implemented, and notionally tested, without access to the related hardware. We present the approaches to simulating the HET hardware systems, their evolution, the successes and shortcomings of the current level of capabilities, and ideas for improvements to simulation and integration testing.

The James Webb Space telescope's (Webb's) deployable primary and secondary mirrors are actively controlled to achieve and maintain precise optical alignment on-orbit. Each of the 18 primary mirror segment assemblies (PMSAs) and the secondary mirror assembly (SMA) are controlled in six degrees of freedom by using six linear actuators in a hexapod arrangement. In addition, each PMSA contains a seventh actuator that adjusts radius of curvature (RoC). The actuators are of a novel stepper motor-based cryogenic two-stage design that is capable of sub-10 nm motion accuracy over a 20 mm range. The nm-level motion of the 132 actuators were carefully tested and characterized before integration into the mirror assemblies. Using these test results as an initial condition, knowledge of each actuator's length (and therefore mirror position) has relied on software bookkeeping and configuration control to keep an accurate motor step count from which actuator position can be calculated. These operations have been carefully performed through years of Webb test operations using both ground support actuator control software as well as the flight Mirror control software (MCS). While the actuator's coarse stage length is cross-checked using a linear variable differential transformer (LVDT), no on-board cross-check exists for the nm-level length changes of the actuators' fine stage. To ensure that the software bookkeeping of motor step count is still accurate after years of testing and to test that the actuator position knowledge was properly handed off from the ground software to the flight MCS, a series of optical tests were devised and performed through the Center of Curvature (CoC) ambient optical test campaigns at the Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) and during the thermal-vacuum tests of the entire optical payload that were conducted in Chamber A at Johnson Space Center (JSC). In this paper we describe the application software (ASW) of the instrument control unit (ICU) of NISP, the Near-Infrared Spectro-Photometer of the Euclid mission. This software is based on a real-time operating system (RTEMS) and will interface with all the subunits of NISP, as well as the command and data management unit (CDMU) of the spacecraft for telecommand and housekeeping management.

To reduce the energy usage of olefins plants it is necessary to have well-trained operators and maintenance personnel, optimized processes, and knowledge of equipment health and process unit performance capabilities. This can be accomplished using advanced software applications implemented on an open architecture for ease of integration with existing systems. The components of the overall solution include: Dynamic training simulators for skills development of control room operators; Virtual Reality (VR), Augmented Reality (AR) and Mobility Platforms for enhancing the; effectiveness of field operators; Asset health and performance monitoring software for improving asset reliability; A control loop management application; Model-based advanced process control software for operating closer to constraints; Online process and utilities optimization software for minimizing energy usage based on process unit performance capabilities and constraints. This presentation will describe system functionality, how the components interact to support overall energy optimization, and provide estimates of the benefits they can be expected to deliver.

CubeSat technology is evolving rapidly. With the increased performance of these small spacecraft platforms, astronomical missions on CubeSats will be flown in the near future. These types of missions have very demanding requirements in terms of spacecraft pointing. At the KU Leuven university, we have developed a compact, high-accuracy attitude determination and control system for CubeSats. The system uses three reaction wheels and a star tracker to deliver high agility and accuracy. In this paper, we will discuss the test and calibration campaign that was carried out. This campaign was instrumental in achieving the performance required by astronomical missions.

The Adaptive Optics Facility (AOF) is one of the most important ESO projects developed for the VLT programme in the last years. The AOF, currently still under commissioning, brings built-in AO capabilities (GLAO and LTAO) to one of the VLT 8m telescopes (Yepun) that is now equipped with a deformable secondary mirror (DSM), four lasers guide stars (4LGSF) and two AO modules: GRAAL for the HAWK-I infrared imager and GALACSI for the MUSE 3D spectrograph. This paper describes the main aspects of the software responsible for the control and monitor of the two AO modules, as well as for the coordination of subsystems like the instruments and the telescope. Furthermore details of the strategy followed to minimize the impact on configuration control associated to several commissioning periods interleaved with normal operations will be given. The control software package consist of a set of modules based on the VLT instrumentation Framework and on the VLT platform for AO Real-Time Applications (SPARTA). We will present the software and control design choices that have contributed to the successful commissioning and science verification of GALACSI Wide Field Mode (WFM) and the first verifications of GRAAL tip/tilt free mode covering the control of challenging devices such as the GRAAL Co-rotator or the GALACSI visible Field Selector together with the innovative and flexible implementation of the AO acquisition sequence and its seamless integration to the instrument observations, the handling of secondary loops and the development of health-check and commissioning scripts (templates) that automated the verification of the different observing modes.

The Greenland telescope (GLT) project and the East Asian Observatory (EAO) successfully commissioned the first light GLT instrument at the James Clerk Maxwell telescope (JCMT) in Hawaii, prior to transferring the instrument to Greenland. The GLT instrument which comprises of a cryostat with three cartridge-type receivers (at 86GHz, 230GHz and 345GHz) was installed into the receiver cabin of JCMT and operated in three modes: - (a) Regular JCMT observing with the GLT instrument, using ACSIS, (JCMT's autocorrelation spectrometer) as the backend and JCMT software for telescope control, data reduction, pointing and antenna focus adjustment. (b) Single dish observations of astronomical spectral line sources, recording data onto mark 6 recorders for offline data reduction. (c) eSMA interferometer array observations at 230GHz in conjunction with the SMA. In this paper, we report on the installation and integration of the GLT instrument at JCMT, present results from commissioning and show how the success of the GLT instrument commissioning fits with our plans for future instrumentation at JCMT.

Aligning and commissioning the James Webb Space telescope's segmented mirrors after launch will last many months and involve the telescope itself, all science instruments, and all parts of the observatory ground system. In an effort to assess and demonstrate readiness of the complete end-to-end system - i.e. the flight optical telescope elements (OTE), the Integrated Science Instruments Module, the on-board operational scripts, and the ground processing infrastructure - we performed two operations tests during the JWST OTIS cryogenic campaign in 2017. They are the Wavefront Sensing and control Demonstration activities at NASA Johnson Space Center (JSC), where we performed flight-like sensing and control using the flight software to command mirror moves and take measurements, and a "Shadow Mode test" at the Space telescope Science Institute's Mission Operations Center (MOC), where we demonstrated processing of the JSC data through the entire ground system infrastructure. Overall, these tests demonstrated that the full system that will support OTE commissioning is soundly designed although still not fully mature. This paper focuses on the operations and systems testing aspects and some lessons learned. We also report on a series of Wavefront Rehearsals being held at the MOC that are providing additional opportunities to build team readiness in operating the ground system as a whole using high-fidelity observatory simulators.

Geometry aspect review of the natural circulation system as innovation in passive cooling of nuclear reactor

The passive nuclear reactor cooling system has become a fascinating topic, especially since the nuclear incident in Fukushima Daiichi, Japan. This study proposed to review a natural circulation-based passive cooling system in the geometry aspects of the loop. The numerical review was carried out using COMSOL Multiphysics software to study the geometry effect on the loop's fluid characteristics. Moreover, related research data to the study of the effect of fluid flow rate on one of the advanced nuclear reactors, namely the Molten Salt Reactor and the effect of loop geometry experimentally, are presented in this study for enrichment purposes. This study clearly showed that geometry aspects need to be considered in designing a natural circulation-based passive cooling system of a nuclear reactor.
