The Daniel K. Inouye Solar telescope (DKIST) will include facility instruments that perform polarimetric observations of the sun. In order for an instrument to successfully perform these observations its Instrument controller (IC) software must be able to tightly synchronize the activities of its sub-systems including polarization modulators, cameras, and mechanisms. In this paper we discuss the DKIST control model for synchronizing these sub-systems without the use of hardware trigger lines by using the DKIST Time Reference And Distribution System (TRADS) as a common time base and through sub-system control interfaces that support configuring the timing and cadence of their behavior. The DKIST Polarization Modulator controller System (PMCS) provides an interface that allows the IC to characterize the rotation of the modulator in terms of a reference time (t0), rate, and start state. The DKIST Virtual Camera (VC) provides a complimentary interface that allows data acquisitions and accumulation sequences to be specified using a reference time (t0), rate, and execution block time slices, which are cumulative offsets from t0. Re-configuration of other instrument mechanisms such as filter, slits, or steering mirrors during the observation is the responsibility of the IC and must be carefully scheduled at known and pre-determined gaps in the VC data acquisition sequence. The DKIST TRADS provides an IEEE-1588-2008 Precision Time Protocol (PTP) service that is used to synchronize the activities of instrument sub-systems. The modulator, camera, and mechanism sub-systems subscribe to this service and can therefore perform their tasks according to a common time base. In this paper we discuss the design of the PMCS, VC, and mechanism control interfaces, and how the IC can use them to configure the behavior of these sub-systems during an observation. The Observatorio Astrofisico de Javalambre (OAJ) is a new astronomical facility located at the Sierra de Javalambre (Teruel, Spain) whose primary role will be to conduct all-sky astronomical surveys with two unprecedented telescopes of unusually large fields of view: the JST/T250, a 2.55m telescope of 3deg field of view, and the JAST/T80, an 83cm telescope of 2deg field of view. CEFCA engineering team has been designing the OAJ control system as a global concept to manage, monitor, control and maintain all the observatory systems including not only astronomical subsystems but also infrastructure and other facilities. In order to provide quality, reliability and efficiency, the OAJ control system (OCS) design is based on CIA (control Integrated Architecture) and OEE (Overall Equipment Effectiveness) as a key to improve day and night operation processes. The OCS goes from low level hardware layer including IOs connected directly to sensors and actuators deployed around the whole observatory systems, including telescopes and astronomical instrumentation, up to the high level software layer as a tool to perform efficiently observatory operations. We will give an overview of the OAJ control system design and implementation from an engineering point of view, giving details of the design criteria, technology, architecture, standards, functional blocks, model structure, development, deployment, goals, report about the actual status and next steps.

Commissioning time for an instrument at an observatory is precious, especially the night time. Whenever astronomers come up with a software feature request or point out a software defect, the software engineers have the task to find a solution and implement it as fast as possible. In this project phase, the software engineers work under time pressure and stress to deliver a functional instrument control software (ICS). The shortness of development time during commissioning is a constraint for software engineering teams and applies to the ARGOS project as well. The goal of the ARGOS (advanced Rayleigh guided Ground layer adaptive Optics System) project is the upgrade of the Large Binocular telescope (LBT) with an adaptive optics (AO) system consisting of six Rayleigh laser guide stars and wavefront sensors. For developing the ICS, we used the technique Test-Driven Development (TDD) whose main rule demands that the programmer writes test code before production code. Thereby, TDD can yield a software system, that grows without defects and eases maintenance. Having applied TDD in a calm and relaxed environment like office and laboratory, the ARGOS team has profited from the benefits of TDD. Before the commissioning, we were worried that the time pressure in that tough project phase would force us to drop TDD because we would spend more time writing test code than it would be worth. Despite this concern at the beginning, we could keep TDD most of the time also in this project phase This report describes the practical application and performance of TDD including its benefits, limitations and problems during the ARGOS commissioning. Furthermore, it covers our experience with pair programming and continuous integration at the telescope.

control and instrumentation Group at the Centre for Development of advanced Computing (CDAC), Thiruvananthapuram, has deployed an integrated control and monitoring system at a 210 MW thermal power plant in India. This system has all the features of an advanced Supervisory control and Data Acquisition System (SCADA) and in addition has support for web-based SCADA. This paper outlines and discusses the various hardware and software components used in this SCADA system. How these basic components are combined in realizing various subsystems of this SCADA like the Prediction based Superheater and Reheater Steam Temperature control, Genetic Algorithm based Pulverized Coal Flow Soft Sensor and Wireless Monitoring of Cooling Water Pump House are also detailed. Various results obtained with this SCADA system in place are pondered upon. The main objective of this paper is to bring out the salient features of this SCADA system against the backdrop of a critical and dynamic environment as in a 210 MW coal-fired thermal power plant which expects maximum efficiency and minimum downtime from a SCADA system overseeing it. © 2014 IEEE.

New technique eases aspheric lens fabrication and overcome traditional limitation. An aspheric lens has been designed by using optical designing software to replace the achromat (Doublet) lens of eyepiece assembly of telescope. The devised physical parameters of aspheric lens have been incorporated into the CNC Aspheric machine to fabricate the lens. The antireflection coating for visible region has been carried out on lens by employing PVD technique. In this report diminished aberration effects due to non-spherical surface profile and comparison of optical parameters of achromat (doublet) and aspheric lens is presented.

This paper describes the hardware and software components used in a Supervisory control And Data Acquisition (SCADA) system, developed by the Centre for Development of advanced Computing (CDAC), Thiruvananthapuram, for advanced Steam Temperature control of a 210 MW thermal power plant boiler. Details of how this SCADA system implements desirable property like fault tolerance and high availability is outlined. Additionally, the paper also discusses the Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) based predictive steam temperature control algorithm running in the Remote Terminal Unit (RTU) of this SCADA system. This algorithm is compared against the cascaded PID scheme used in conventional steam temperature control. Establishing the effectiveness of this SCADA system in increasing the availability of the system and reducing the process lag associated with conventional steam temperature control is the main objective of this paper. © 2014 IEEE.

This paper describes progress since the completion of xTCA for Physics instrumentation standards in 2011. The standards are extensions of the Telecom standard called advanced Telecommunications Computer Architecture for the physics community. The main goals are to provide new IO, timing and synchronization features as well as standard software interface guidelines for accelerator control and instrumentation systems. After issuing the basic IO standards in 2012 for both ATCA and its smaller mezzanine card version known as MicroTCA, labs and industry have continued to collaborate to bring many lab-developed products to market for Commercial Off The Shelf (COTS) availability. In the course of development some significant products were built using both lab and industry sources and tested on-beam for the LCLS-II accelerator project to prove precision of analog performance. These solutions were adopted for the LCLS-II injector and systems completed to readiness for installation in 2013. A change in direction of LCLS-II to a superconducting CW machine running at 1MHz bunch rate has raised additional challenges requiring some redesign. The ongoing Hardware and software working group tasks are summarized including a new backplane extension as well as a brief description of impacts of the new CW machine design.

This paper presents a LabVIEW based security system which will give the security information like video, audio, pictures of the covered region. The system consists of a simple robot, carrying a wireless Infrared (IR) night vision camera, an obstacle sensor and a wireless transmitter/receiver section for driving the motors of the robot. A DSP processor (NI speedy 33) used for controlling the motion of robot and processing the signal acquired from the robot. The video, sound acquisition and processing is realized in National Instrument (NI) LabVIEW programing environment. The advantages of using this software makes easy interface with the hardware, ease of learning, time saving and faster access to peripheral devices.

The Gemini Planet Imager (GPI) is an "extreme" adaptive optics coronagraph system that is now on the Gemini South telescope in Chile. This instrument is composed of three different systems that historically have been separate instruments. These systems are the extreme Adaptive Optics system, with deformable mirrors, including a high-order 64x64 element MEMS system;the Science Instrument, which is a near-infrared integral field spectrograph;and the Calibration system, a precision IR wavefront sensor that also holds key coronagraph components. Each system coordinates actions that require precise timing. The observatory is responsible for starting these actions and has typically done this asynchronously across independent systems. Despite this complexity we strived to provide an interface that is as close to a one-button approach as possible. This paper will describe the sequencing of these systems both internally and externally through the observatory.

The process control virtual laboratory is created by using LabVIEW for demonstrating process control via manipulating a simulated model of a physical process. In this study, a system of convection heat transfer in a rectangular duct is set up and connected with a data acquisition card and a computer serving for an advanced virtual laboratory aimed at supporting teaching and learning in instrumentation and control Engineering courses at Pathumwan Institute of Technology. The use of the virtual laboratory facilitates the ongoing evolution of the teaching method from a traditional didactic lecture and laboratory course to a more student-centered approach. The LabVIEW application is used to conduct several tasks including user interface design, publishing and sharing measured data, instrument control and remote access to a system in the Process control Laboratory. Using LabVIEW software, students can familiarize the basic skills necessary to use equipment and software because the control systems in many industrial processes can be implemented on a computer which runs on LabVIEW. © (2014) Trans Tech Publications, Switzerland.
