The Simons Observatory (SO) is a group of modern telescopes dedicated to observing the polarized cosmic microwave background (CMB), transients, and more. The Observatory consists of four telescopes and instruments, with over 60,000 superconducting detectors in total, located at similar to 5,200m altitude in the Atacama Desert of Chile. During observations, it is important to ensure the detectors, telescope platforms, calibration and receiver hardware, and site hardware are within operational bounds. To facilitate rapid response when problems arise with any part of the system, it is essential that alerts are generated and distributed to appropriate personnel if components exceed these bounds. Similarly, alerts are generated if the quality of the data has become degraded. In this paper, we describe the SO alarm system we developed within the larger Observatory control System (OCS) framework, including the data sources, alert architecture, and implementation. We also present results from deploying the alarm system during the commissioning of the SO telescopes and receivers.

We present the preliminary design of GMagAO-X, the first-light high-contrast imager planned for the Giant Magellan telescope. GMagAO-X will realize the revolutionary increase in spatial resolution and sensitivity provided by the 25 m GMT. It will enable, for the first time, the spectroscopic characterization of nearby potentially habitable terrestrial exoplanets orbiting late-type stars. Additional science cases include: reflected light characterization of mature giant planets;measurement of young extrasolar giant planet variability;characterization of circumstellar disks at unprecedented spatial resolution;characterization of benchmark stellar atmospheres at high spectral resolution;and mapping of resolved objects such as giant stars and asteroids. These, and many more, science cases will be enabled by a 21,000 actuator extreme adaptive optics system, a coronagraphic wavefront control system, and a suite of imagers and spectrographs. We will review the science-driven performance requirements for GMagAO-X, which include achieving a Strehl ratio of 70% at 800 nm on 8th mag and brighter stars, and post-processed characterization at astrophysical flux-ratios of 1e-7 at 4 lambda/D (26 mas at 800 nm) separation. We will provide an overview of the resulting mechanical, optical, and software designs optimized to deliver this performance. We will also discuss the interfaces to the GMT itself, and the concept of operations. We will present an overview of our end-to-end performance modeling and simulations, including the control of segment phasing, as well as an overview of prototype lab demonstrations. Finally, we will review the results of Preliminary Design Review held in February, 2024.

Acquisition and guiding services have been provided at major telescopes in order to improve the quality and efficiency of Field Stabilization is an essential component of the telescope control System. With the arrival of new generation instruments, the stabilization requirements have increased. Higher correction frequency is required to minimize the residuals. A major re-engineering of the CCD acquisition software now enables an increase of the operational frequency from 25 to 87Hz. In this paper we analyze and discuss the performances of field stabilization at various frequencies on the VLT 8m telescopes including the Adaptive 8-m telescope equipped with a deformable secondary mirror. We will report on the analysis of the residuals in function of several operational key parameters, e.g the loop frequency, the magnitude of the selected telescope guide star, etc.. We will also discuss the possible automatization of the FS during night operations.

We outline the development of the readout software for the Prime-Cam and Mod-Cam instruments on the CCAT Fred Young Submillimeter telescope (FYST), primecam readout. The instruments feature lumpedelement kinetic inductance detector (LEKID) arrays driven by Xilinx ZCU111 RFSoC boards. In the current configuration, each board can drive up to 4000 KIDs, and Prime-Cam is implementing approximately 25 boards. The software runs on a centralized control computer connected to the boards via dedicated ethernet, and facilitates such tasks as frequency-multiplexed tone comb driving, comb calibration and optimization, and detector timestream establishment. The control computer utilizes dynamically generated control channels for each board, allowing for simultaneous parallel control over all, while uniquely tracking diagnostics for each. This work demonstrates a scalable RFSoC readout architecture where computational demands increase linearly with the number of detectors, enabling control of tens-ofthousands of KIDs with modest hardware, and opening the door to the next generation of KID arrays housing millions of detectors.

The SPEED test-bed (Segmented Pupil Experiment for Exoplanet Detection) is a high contrast imaging platform whose prime objective is to study coronagraphy and wavefront shaping for large segmented on-axis telescopes. Active control and temporal stability of residual wavefront errors is one pillar to consider for improving detection yields and getting access to object classes with masses ideally down to exoEarths. The SPEED test-bed being more complex than a simple laboratory test bench but less demanding than an on-sky instrument at a telescope, imposes a specific and adapted system and software control development. The paper reports the design of the SPEED system control hardware and software infrastructure that enables the bench to operate efficiently and safely. Because having experts in software engineering processes for laboratory development is rather difficult to afford, the paper will touch on several design items, highlighting aspects which, in our opinion, may be of particular interest for designers and implementers of laboratory control software.

The Oil and Gas industry is facing complex challenges including spiralling exploration and development costs, aging assets, long lead times on equipment, shortage of skilled people, among others. As such, it is imperative existing assets are operated efficiently and properly maintained to maximise production. A typical approach to achieve this objective considers industry best practices, international standards, manufacturer recommendations and condition monitoring techniques such as oil analysis, vibration, thermography, ultrasound, etc. However, the advent of Industry 4.0 has promoted the development and adoption of advanced techniques: a prominent example being the Digital-Twin concept. A Digital-Twin is a virtual model developed using advanced modelling and data handling techniques to replicate and predict the behaviour of individual equipment or entire production systems. A Digital-Twin approach can deliver predictive monitoring capabilities;analysis of complex systems;define solutions to operational issues;virtual testing and confirmation of proposed modifications;etc. This paper presents the development of a Digital-Twin for troubleshooting and operations optimisation of a motor-driven three-stage gas-lift compression system with a long history of unstable operation, recurrent emergency shutdown events and low availability. The multidisciplinary approach includes analysis of the control system architecture, assessment of field instrumentation, data validation, performance benchmarking, dynamic modelling and off-line control system testing. A cost-effective solution with only minor software modifications was designed, tested and demonstrated before its implementation. The successful outcome of the project reduced the need for constant operator intervention, reduced emergency shutdown events, increased availability of the gas compression system from 86% to 98.2%, reduced gas imports, increased gas exports and enhanced oil production.

One of the primary science goals of the HabitableWorlds Observatory (HWO) as defined by the Astro2020 decadal survey is the imaging of the first Earth-like planet around a Sun-like star. A key technology gap towards reaching this goal are the development of ultra-low-noise photon counting detectors capable of measuring the incredibly low count rates coming from these planets which are at contrasts of similar to 1 x 10(-10). Superconducting energy-resolving detectors (ERDs) are a promising technology for this purpose as, despite their technological challenges, needing to be cooled below their superconducting transition temperature (< 1K), they have essentially zero read noise, dark current, or clock-induced charge, and can get the wavelength of each incident photon without the use of additional throughput-reducing filters or gratings that spread light over many pixels. The use of these detectors on HWO will not only impact the science of the mission by decreasing the required exposure times for exo-Earth detection and characterization, but also in a wavefront sensing and control context when used for starlight suppression to generate a dark zone. We show simulated results using both an EMCCD and an ERD to "dig a dark zone" demonstrating that ERDs can achieve the same final contrast as an EMCCD in about half of the total time. We also perform a simple case study using an exposure time calculator tool called the Error Budget software (EBS) to determine the required integration times to detect water for HWO targets of interest using both EMCCDs and ERDs. This shows that once a dark zone is achieved, using an ERD can decrease these exposure times by factors of 1.5-2 depending on the specific host star properties.

NFIRAOS, the Narrow Field Infrared Adaptive Optics System, is the first light AO System for the Thirty Meter telescope (TMT). It performs wavefront correction in the near infrared spectrum using various optomechanical components operating under strictly controlled conditions. The NFIRAOS Optical Enclosure (ENCL) is designed to provide a housing that maintains an ideal clean sub-zero environment (-30 +/- 0.5 C) for such components. To manage this, the ENCL provides a multi-leveled control system that accurately manages the environment using low-level hardware control to ensure that internal systems are not subjected to environmental effects that may adversely affect operation, while coordinating with the telescope operation. We will analyze the aspects of the operational constraints to allow the ENCL control System to communicate with low level sensors and controllers as well as with the high-level controller management system to ensure all operational conditions are fully met.

Introducing the open-source Observatory control System (OCS) project, which aims to provide a suite of software for managing the user-facing operations of an observatory. It includes applications for managing users and proposals, requesting and scheduling observations, and storing and accessing data products. The OCS applications are fully API-driven for core functionality, and consist of a Python Django backend with VueJS frontend (where applicable) and a set of accompanying Python libraries. Using the OCS, observatories can enjoy seamless integration with the Astronomical Event Observatory Network (AEON) initiative. The core of the project consists of the Observation Portal, which provides user account and observational request life-cycle management, and the Configuration Database, which defines the capabilities of telescopes and instruments at the observatory. The OCS provides a fully functional adaptive scheduler and science archive, while its modular architecture allows them to be substituted for solutions specific to a given observatory. A flexible observation request language is employed which is suitable for a wide-range of telescope and instrument types. The OCS project applications are currently in use at Las Cumbres Observatory (LCOGT), managing a network of 25 telescopes, thousands of users and their proposals, and millions of observations.

This paper relates to the numerical simulations applied to CaNaPy, a monostatic LGS-AO system being now integrated at the ESA OGS 1m telescope. CaNaPy is a demonstrator of LGS-AO systems for visible wavelengths. The primary objective of CaNaPy is to create a field test facility with a novel LGS-AO architectures based on monostatic propagation, by showcasing their feasibility and performance, thereby laying the groundwork for possible future LGS-AO instruments for visible wavelengths in the 4m, 8m and 40m class telescopes. CaNaPy offers an LGS-AO experimental TRL6 facility for verifying several breakthroughs, including a 70W CW 589nm laser with frequency chirping operated in pulsed mode, full uplink beam correction aimed at reducing the LGS’s size at the mesosphere, pyramid wavefront sensor utilising the small LGS thus gaining in sensitivity, in an AO system for best performances at visible wavelengths. A complete simulation of the monostatic CaNaPy facility has now been established in PASSATA, an IDL-based object-oriented simulation software for end-to-end numerical simulations of adaptive optics systems developed at Istituto Nazionale di Astro-Fisica (INAF). PASSATA functionalities have been upgraded to simulate the CaNaPy configuration. This modelling includes geometrical and physical optics propagation of the upward-propagated guide star laser, precise time delay modeling for the up and downlink of the laser beam, extended vertical sodium profile, and Karhunen-Loeve modal gain optimization within the control loop. The LGS-AO system simulated in CaNaPy employs a pulsed 70W laser with 33% duty cycle, with the 589nm laser that propagates through the entire 1-m aperture of the ESA OGS telescope at Teide Observatory, using double axicon optics to prevent losses caused by the central obstruction. We will present the expected performance of this monostatic, pulsed operation approach, in which the same pupil is utilized for both transmitting and receiving the laser beam.
