In recent years, an advanced motion control software for rapid development has been introduced by National Instruments, accompanied by innovative and improved FPGA-based hardware platforms. The LabVIEW NI SoftMotion module combines a graphical development environment for motion control applications with a variety of tools for axis configuration, motor tuning and hardware setup validation. This paper presents an application of a motion control system based on the NI SoftMotion module, NI Compact RIO (cRIO) Real Time FPGA controller and a flexible workbench. It replicates real industrial applications and is very useful for experimentation with Brushless DC/Permanent Magnet Synchronous motors and drives, and feedback devices.

controller design for omni-directional mobile robots (OMRs), which is referred to as a benchmark control problem in most of the related literature, becomes more difficult when their main characteristic to rapidly change position and orientation is desired. On the other hand, it is severe to provide their dynamics model analytically including an exact description of the slip phenomena. The aim of the present study is to design a model free control algorithm for a typical OMR equipped with 3 standard omni-directional wheels so that the interesting characteristic is preserved. In this way, a new software based mechatronic model, which contains numerical model of the ground contact forces, is introduced for the under study system. After that, the controller is designed via fuzzy logic theory based on fundamental movement modes. Some set of simulations are conducted in order to investigate the merit of the used method. Good trajectory tracking results are reported before advanced tuning of the proposed fuzzy controllers.

Prototype Fast Breeder Reactor (PFBR) is in the advanced stage of construction at Kalpakkam, India. Liquid sodium is used as coolant to transfer the heat produced in the reactor core to steam water circuit. Impurities present in the sodium are removed using purification circuit. Plugging indicator is a device used to measure the purity of the sodium. Versa Module Europa bus based Real Time Computer (RTC) system is used for plugging indicator control. Hot standby architecture consisting of dual redundant RTC system with switch over logic system is the configuration adopted to achieve fault tolerance. Plugging indicator can be controlled in two modes namely continuous and discontinuous mode. software based Proportional-Integral-Derivative (PID) algorithms are developed for plugging indicator control wherein the set point changes dynamically for every scan interval of the RTC system. Set points and PID constants are kept as configurable in runtime in order to control the process in very efficient manner, which calls for reliable communication between RTC system and control station, hence TCP/IP protocol is adopted. Performance of the RTC system for plugging indicator control was thoroughly studied in the laboratory by simulating the inputs and monitored the control outputs. The control outputs were also monitored for different PID constants. Continuous and discontinuous mode plots were generated.

European Framework Research Projects have recently added a lot of meaning to the building process of the ERA - the European Research Area. Inside this, the accelerator technology plays an essential role. Accelerator technology includes large infrastructure and intelligent, modern instrumentation embracing mechatronics, electronics, photonics and ICT. During the realization of the European research and infrastructure project FP6 CARE 2004-2008 (Coordinated Accelerator Research in Europe), concerning the development of large accelerator infrastructure in Europe, it was decided that a scientific editorial series of peer-reviewed monographs from this research area will be published in close relation with the projects. It was a completely new and quite brave idea to combine a kind of a strictly research publisher with a transient project, lasting only four or five years. Till then nobody did something like that. The idea turned out to be a real success. The publications now known and valued in the accelerator world, as the (CERN-WUT) Editorial Series on Accelerator Science and Technology, is successfully continued in already the third European project EuCARD(2) and has logistic guarantees, for the moment, till the 2017, when it will mature to its first decade. During the realization of the European projects EuCARD (European Coordination for Accelerator R&D 2009-2013 and TIARA (Test Infrastructure of Accelerator Research Area in Europe) there were published 18 volumes in this series. The ambitious plans for the nearest years is to publish, hopefully, a few tens of new volumes. Accelerator science and technology is one of a key enablers of the developments in the particle physic, photon physics and also applications in medicine and industry. The paper presents a digest of the research results in the domain of accelerator science and technology in Europe, published in the monographs of the European Framework Projects (FP) on accelerator technology. This paper focuses on the various aspects of Power Quality and describes the recent advances in Power Quality monitoring systems and the software analysis of the same. With the increase in the addition of non-linear loads to electrical systems, it has become necessary to ensure that voltage degradation does not occur at the transmission or distribution stage. Radiation detectors featuring long term stability, self-sustained operation and low power consumption are crucial for longterm environmental monitoring (e.g. nuclear waste disposals and mining activities) and provide enhanced applications of nuclear fingerprinting e.g. in farming and geological surveying. INCAS 3 is developing a compact modular system consisting of four functional modules, namely analogue conditioning and signal digitalization, dead-time-free real-time signal processing, embedded high level analysis of the processed signal, and wireless communication. The modules are organized such that they can be interchanged and modified independently. For the input module one can choose an ADC sampling frequency to be either 100 MHz with 14 bit precision or 1 GHz with reduced precision (10 bit). The main focus of the signal processing section, based on an FPGA, is on providing dead-time-free signal handling in real time. Other useful features such as base line correction, pulse shape analysis (energy, decay and arrival time) are being developed as (VHDL) library functions. Additional modules, e.g. anomaly detection in the incoming signal, pile-up correction if operated at high rates and advanced signal shape processing, can be included in the processing if required and can be applied to autonomously generate the information necessary to control the sensor parameters and stabilize energy spectra and sensitivity. At present we operate the system in conjunction with inorganic scintillators (NaI, CsI) read out by a photomultiplier in order to provide a system capable of long term quantification of nuclear contaminations in natural environments. The underlying technology is based on detecting natural or anthropogenic gamma radiation and generating corresponding energy spectra in real time. The advanced Technology Solar telescope (ATST) is a 4-meter solar observatory under construction at Haleakala, Hawaii. The simultaneous use of multiple instruments is one of the unique capabilities that makes the ATST the premier ground based solar observatory. Although the operation of the instruments and the data collected varies widely across the ATST instrument suite, the basic control functions and data recording capabilities are similar. Each instrument must be capable of controlling its devices, mechanisms and hardware, interacting with the Instrument control System (ICS), and saving science data. Because of these similarities, the ATST software Group has developed the Standard Instrument Framework (SIF), a set of software components comprising a framework that can be used to implement instrument controllers with common functionality for all ATST instrumentation. The SIF is built upon the ATST Common Services Framework (CSF) and includes controllers capable of interfacing with the ICS, managing sub-controllers and multiple camera systems, as well as coordinating the instrument's mechanical mechanisms and other hardware. The key to this framework is the principle that each controller has a small, well defined task and when the individual pieces are combined, a powerful control system may easily be implemented. Moreover, because most of the instruments for the ATST are being developed by partner institutions, the SIF allows for standardization of the instrument control systems throughout the instrument suite and reduced software development effort for the partners. This will lead to significant code reuse and a smaller code base that is easier to maintain.

The advanced Technology Solar telescope (ATST) Common Services Framework (CSF) and ATST Base provide the technical framework and building blocks for developing telescope and instrument control systems. The ATST Visible Broadband Imager (VBI) is a high priority instrument with science use cases requiring a control system capable of executing deterministic motion control tasks and synchronizing those tasks with other systems in the observatory. The VBI control system is the first designed and developed using the ATST CSF and Base components, and therefore provides insight into the strengths and weaknesses of using distributed control software in the instrument domain. In this paper we lay out the design of the VBI control system, examine how the underlying ATST CSF and Base components are utilized, and discuss where custom software is incorporated to meet real-time performance and synchronization requirements. We present our analysis of the system design against three of the VBI use cases.

The Sardinia Radio telescope (SRT) is a new 64-meter shaped antenna designed to carry out observations up to 100 GHz. This large instrument has been built in Sardinia, 35 km north of Cagliari, and is now facing the technical commissioning phase. This paper describes the architecture, the implementation solutions and the development status of NURAGHE, the SRT control software. Aim of the project was to produce a software which is reliable, easy to keep up to date and flexible against other telescopes. The most ambitious goal will be to install NURAGHE at all the three italian radio telescopes, allowing the astronomers to access these facilities through a common interface with very limited extra effort. We give a description of all the control software subsystems (servo systems, backends, receivers, etc.) focusing on the resulting design, which is based on the ACS (Alma Common software) patterns and comes from linux-based, LGPL, Object-Oriented development technologies. We also illustrate how NURAGHE deals with higher level requirements, coming from the telescope management or from the system users.
