SPTpol is a dual-frequency polarization-sensitive camera that was deployed on the 10-meter South Pole telescope in January 2012. SPTpol will measure the polarization anisotropy of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) on angular scales spanning an arcminute to several degrees. The polarization sensitivity of SPTpol will enable a detection of the CMB "B-mode" polarization from the detection of the gravitational lensing of the CMB by large scale structure, and a detection or improved upper limit on a primordial signal due to inflationary gravity waves. The two measurements can be used to constrain the sum of the neutrino masses and the energy scale of inflation. These science goals can be achieved through the polarization sensitivity of the SPTpol camera and careful control of systematics. The SPTpol camera consists of 768 pixels, each containing two transition-edge sensor (TES) bolometers coupled to orthogonal polarizations, and a total of 1536 bolometers. The pixels are sensitive to light in one of two frequency bands centered at 90 and 150 GHz, with 180 pixels at 90 GHz and 588 pixels at 150 GHz. The SPTpol design has several features designed to control polarization systematics, including: single-moded feedhorns with low cross-polarization, bolometer pairs well-matched to difference atmospheric signals, an improved ground shield design based on far-sidelobe measurements of the SPT, and a small beam to reduce temperature to polarization leakage. We present an overview of the SPTpol instrument design, project status, and science projections.

The QUIJOTE-CMB project has been described in previous publications. Here we present the current status of the QUIJOTE multi-frequency instrument (MFI) with five separate polarimeters (providing 5 independent sky pixels): two which operate at 10-14 GHz, two which operate at 16-20 GHz, and a central polarimeter at 30 GHz. The optical arrangement includes 5 conical corrugated feedhorns staring into a dual reflector crossed-draconian system, which provides optimal cross-polarization properties (designed to be < -35 dB) and symmetric beams. Each horn feeds a novel cryogenic on-axis rotating polar modulator which can rotate at a speed of up to 1 Hz. The science driver for this first instrument is the characterization of the galactic emission. The polarimeters use the polar modulator to derive linear polar parameters Q, U and I and switch out various systematics. The detection system provides optimum sensitivity through 2 correlated and 2 total power channels. The system is calibrated using bright polarized celestial sources and through a secondary calibration source and antenna. The acquisition system, telescope control and housekeeping are all linked through a real-time gigabit Ethernet network. All communication, power and helium gas are passed through a central rotary joint. The time stamp is synchronized to a GPS time signal. The acquisition software is based on PLCs written in Beckhoffs TwinCat and ethercat. The user interface is written in LABVIEW. The status of the QUIJOTE MFI will be presented including pre-commissioning results and laboratory testing.

The Cherenkov telescope Array (CTA) [1] will be the successor to current Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes (IACT) like H.E.S.S., MAGIC and VERITAS. CTA will improve in sensitivity by about an order of magnitude compared to the current generation of IACTs. The energy range will extend from well below 100 GeV to above 100 TeV. To accomplish these goals, CTA will consist of two arrays, one in each hemisphere, consisting of 50-80 telescopes and composed of three different telescope types with different mirror sizes. It will be the first open observatory for very high energy γ-ray astronomy. The Array control working group of CTA is currently evaluating existing technologies which are best suited for a project like CTA. The considered solutions comprise the ALMA Common software (ACS), the OPC Unified Architecture (OPC UA) and the Data Distribution Service (DDS) for bulk data transfer. The first applications, like an automatic observation scheduler and the control software for some prototype instrumentation have been developed.

Due to the complex and distributed nature of high-end projects in Life Science Automation, it is still not possible to simulate workflows on laboratory workbenches frequently in a real time equivalent manner. It is crucial to ensure the availability of desired assays and automated workflows in advance. This paper presents the concept of a 4D simulation system, which synthesizes technologies as Process control software (PCS), Data Management System (DMS), programming technology, advanced CAD technology and some 3D animation tool to realize a dynamic simulation for Laboratory Workflow Management. The system would be flexible and controllable for automation assays, improve laboratory workflows, efficiency and accuracy, which would reduce the assays cost and the risks of rushing to unreasonable plans, and also improve the laboratory management level.

In this paper, we expose a successful approach of a course project aiming to improve technical skills of engineering students by encouraging them to use common software tools and developing experimental platforms. The course is dedicated to advanced undergraduate control engineering students. Only two experimental platforms, among twenty projects, developed by the students as part of the course are exposed. The two projects use LabVIEW programming environment, its data acquisition platform and a wide-ranging set of tools for analyzing, displaying and storing data. The main objective of such education approach is to produce qualified engineers who are ready for innovation in research and industry careers, able to share results and collaborate with international projects. Recruitment results have shown that employers have more confidence in the technical abilities of our students for creating new business opportunities which could enhance their recruitment criteria.

With the fast progression of digital data exchange in electronic way, security of information is becoming more important in data storage and transmission. Cryptography has come up as a solution which plays a vital role in information security system against malicious attacks. This security system uses some algorithms to scramble data into scribbled text which can be only being decoded or decrypted by party those possesses the associated key. These algorithms consume a significant amount of computing resources such as CPU time, memory and computation time. In this paper a most widely used symmetric encryption techniques i.e. advanced encryption standard (AES) have been implemented using MATLAB software. After the implementing this encryption technique, analysis is done by using a parameter called Avalanche effect. Plaintext and encryption key are mapped in binary code before encryption process. Avalanche Effect is calculated by changing one bit in plaintext keeping the key constant and by changing one bit in encryption key keeping the key constant, Experimental results shows that the proposed algorithm exhibit significant high Avalanche Effect which improves the level of the security.

The Intelligent Platform Management controller (IPMC) is one of the main elements in an advanced Telecommunications Computing Architecture (ATCA) crate that is responsible for the ATCA/xTCA hardware management. Hardware failure detection, redundancy procedures and hot insertion/removal of the modules, are tasks that grant high-availability to a control and data acquisition system. So, IPFN/IST decided to develop software to an IPMC sodimm module from CoreIPM ® and integrate it in the ATCA modules that are being developed aiming to be included in the instrumentation catalogue of tokamak ITER. This paper outlines the architecture and the main tasks that the software of the IPMC module executes.

Astronomical telescope is a powerful tool for star observation, but adjusting a telescope is time-consuming. For most of astronomy amateurs, their telescopes don't have an intelligent system to ease the adjustment of telescope. Therefore, we propose an integrated system for astronomical telescope. The integrated system presents a friendly telescope control interface and provides functions including telescope monitoring, star targeting, star profile retrieval and star tracking. The most powerful feature of the integrated system is star tracking. By using camshift algorithm and PID controller, the star tracking module can help user track certain objects such as plant and comet. © 2011 IEEE.

The proposed Chinese Space Solar telescope (SST) is the first large aperture space telescope in China designed to observe the sun. With an effective aperture of Phi 1m, the primary mirror faces the sun directly, which receives more than 1000W heat that will lead to unacceptable thermal distortion in such severe thermal condition. Therefore, the temperature field of SST, which is changing with its orbital position, is critical in its design. In this paper, an analysis of the thermal flux in the SST is presented firstly. Further more, the heat flux of orbit is calculated with the thermal softerware NEVADA (Net Energy Verification And Determination Analyzer) according to the orbit parameters of SST. The thermal design software SINDA/G (System Improved Numerical Differencing Analyzer/Gaski), the radiation analysis software NEVADA and the finite element analysis software *** are used to simulate the temperature field of the SST. In the end, the temperature distribution of the primary mirror is calculated. The temperature level of the primary mirror indicates that the system can achieve high spatial resolution with 0.1"similar to 0.15". It also means that the thermal control design is effective. The optical requirements to the SST thermal control are met. The thoughts and methods of the thermal analysis are also useful for similar optical telescopes designed for solar observation.

An innovative approach for Steam Generator Pressure control of a nuclear power plant

The main function of the Steam Generator Pressure control (SGPC) Program is to match the power (heat) generation in the reactor core with the heat removal in the steam generators (SGs). For most of the designs these programs have been over simplified to cater to the limitation of the instrumentation and control, hardware and software. The main objective of balancing the heat generation, transfer and removal gets lost in the process, which leads to reduction in the availability of the nuclear power plant. This is reflected in under utilization of the process and control system provisions to avoid reactor trips on low/high pressure. Most of the transients/accidents have their origin in the mismatch among the heat generated in the reactor core and the heat removal in the SGs. A new advanced Process control (APC) based supervisory controller is proposed to ride over the existing SGPC to achieve the goal. This APC makes use of the estimated/measured heat generation-removal error to alter the SGPC set point to tide over the transients after detection. The transients are detected based on the magnitude of this error to activate the APC. After tiding over the transient successfully the control switches back to the existing SGPC. For evaluation of this error additional instrumentation is proposed in the SG tube walls and other structures of the primary system. The Reactor Regulating System (RRS) which manipulates the reactor power, PI-IT pressure controller and the SGPC must work in a synchronized and optimized fashion so as to avoid a reactor trip following the PCP trip and other transients. With the existing design it is often observed that these control loops conflict with each other, as they are not designed with a multivariable integrated approach. The objective is being fulfilled by developing new supervisory APC logics to ride over the existing Proportional Integral Derivative (PID) controllers of various process loops.
