Requirements for modern and future control systems for large projects like International Linear Collider demand high availability for control system components. Recently telecom industry came up with a great open hardware specification - advanced Telecom Computing Architecture (ATCA). This specification is aimed for better reliability, availability and serviceability. Since its first market appearance in 2004. ATCA platform has shown tremendous growth and proved to be stable and well represented by a number of vendors. ATCA is an industry standard for highly available systems. On the other hand Service Availability Forum, a consortium of leading communications and computing companies, describes interaction between hardware and software. SAF defines a set of specifications such as Hardware Platform Interface, Application Interface Specification. SAF specifications provide extensive description of highly available systems, services and their interfaces. Originally aimed for telecom applications, these specifications can be used for accelerator controls software as well. This study describes benefits of using these specifications and their possible adoption to accelerator control systems. It is demonstrated how EPICS Redundant IOC was extended using Hardware Platform Interface specification, which made it possible to utilize benefits of the ATCA platform. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. Laboratory and on-sky experience suggests that the integration of big astronomical instruments, specially of a complex interferometric system, is a challenging process. LINC-NIRVANA is the Fizeau interferometric imager for the Large Binocular telescope (LBT). Simulating the final operating environment of every system component has shown how critical is the presence of flexures, vibrations and thermal expansion. Assembling and aligning the opto-mechanical sub-systems will require an absolute reference which is not affected by static displacements or positioning errors. A multi-purpose calibration unit has been designed to ensure the quality of the alignment of optics and detectors and the reliability of the mechanical setup. This new compact and light-weighted unit is characterized by sophisticated kinematics, simple mechanical design and composite materials. In addition, the reduced number of motorized axis improves the stiffness and lowers the angular displacements due to moving parts. The modular concept integrates several light sources to provide the proper calibration reference for the different sub-systems of LINC-NIRVANA. For the standard alignment of the optics an absolute reference fiber will be used. For flat-fielding of the detectors the unit provides an integrating sphere, and a special rotating multi-fiber plate (infrared and visible) is used to calibrate the advanced adaptive optics and the fringe-tracking systems. A module to control non-common path aberrations (Flattening of Deformable Mirrors) is also provided.

LINC-NIRVANA is the IR Fizeau interferometric imager that will be installed within a couple of years on the Large Binocular telescope (LBT) in Arizona. Here we present a particular sub-system, the so-called Patrol Camera (PC), which has been now completed, along with the results of the laboratory tests. It images (in the range 600-900 nm) the same 2 arcmin FoV seen by the Medium-High Wavefront Sensor (MHWS), adequately sampled to provide the MHWS star enlargers with the positions of the FoV stars with an accuracy of 0.1 arcsec. To this aim a diffraction-limited performance is not required, while a distortion free focal plane is needed to provide a suitable astrometric output. Two identical systems have been realized, one for each single arm, which corresponds to each single telescope. We give here the details concerning the optical and mechanical layout, as well as the CCD and the control system. The interfaces (mainly software procedures) with LINC-NIRVANA (L-N) are also presented.

Leading by global convergency of devices and software from different domains (mobile, desktop, web) information exchange platforms are also evolve into form of smart spaces, personal localized semantic information clouds. New architectures appear, fulfilling needs of cross-platform interaction, semantic reasoning and many other novel functions. In this paper we discuss access control problem for such kind of platforms. Several achievements are described briefly highlighting features that are most interesting in given context, requirements for access control framework are suggested and finally we introduce model of access control framework for one of the most promising smart spaces architecture. © 2010 Springer-Verlag.

The standalone, portable Terahertz (THz) Imaging Profiler Array (TIPA) based on an Offner Relay design has been constructed as a THz beam profiler and multispectral imager. It integrates a solid-state detector technology (Schottky Diodes) that can be configured in an array to cover the frequency range from 0.60 to 0.90 THz. The reconfigurable 16 element Schottky diode detector array is utilized along with imaging and scanning mirror modules and system control hardware and software to produce high spatial or temporal beam profiles of THz beams. Images of THz source profiles are presented along with THz images of relevant targets. Potential applications are discussed.

This article presents a generic digital control system for the stabilization of Radio Frequency (RF) fields used in particle accelerators, the Libera LLRF. Low Level RF (LLRF) systems have an important contribution in the overall performance of the accelerator since they are responsible for the control of amplitude and phase of electromagnetic fields inside the accelerating structures. The goal was to develop a high performance, small form factor system that uses the latest advances in technology. In order to fulfill these design goals Micro Telecommunications Computing Architecture (MicroTCA) and related standards were chosen as a basis for the system's hardware and software development. Results of hardware development are three different types of advanced Mezzanine Cards (AMC), Interconnection Board (ICB), chassis, backplane and replaceable fan modules. The AMC boards are LLRF application specific and have input/output ports for RF signals. In order to enable support for different RF frequencies, they also include replaceable RF circuits. The ICB implements the functions of a MicroTCA Carrier Hub (MCH) and acts as a COM Express carrier board for the mounted COM Express module. With its different ports at the front, the ICB enables local and remote operation and maintenance of the Libera LLRF. Chassis management is implemented according to the Intelligent Platform Management Interface (IPMI) protocol. The LLRF application software, which runs on the Linux operating system and includes a Graphical User Interface (GUI), enables the user to operate the system and monitor different types of RF signals. © 2010 IEEE.

Application technology of computer-aided design to large-scale long belt conveyor is presented. A new software system of belt conveyor design based on the standard CEMA has been developed in which the object-oriented technology and new optimal design method with the standard CEMA were adapted. The profile and operation of belt conveyor can be modeled on real-time by means of visual dynamic components and efficient database management. It is proved that the system is available in design, convenient in operation, rapid in optimization, efficient in calculation, and visual in modeling. © (2010) Trans Tech Publications.

In order to comprise energy efficiency for electrical devices in homes, a smart grid-base AMI (advanced Metering Infrastructure), which checks electricity consumption and controls the electric energy used with the demand response technique, is necessary for remotely managing the load of the energy and power consumed. The smart controller calculates the amount of electricity consumed by customer on real time basis from the utility supplier like electric supply company. In this paper, we propose the hardware architecture and software of the smart controller for use as the platform in smart grid system. The smart controller is installed on the electric plug of the electric appliance. The smart controller grasps the electricity amount used in the electric appliance and delivers to the AMI / EMS (Energy Management Server). In addition, according to the electricity price change, the use of energy of the electric appliance is limited. It will also show that it is available to apply to home for efficiently controlling the electric energy consumption. ©ICROS.

controlling combustion processes is an important task, mainly with respect to energy efficiency and ecological impacts. This problem has become significant with the increased use of biomass-fired boilers, including low-power boilers. The combustion process is a process that we have limited information about. The equations for the chemical reactions are known, but in reality combustion of biomass is much more complicated and more variable than a mathematical model can express. It is therefore not simple to design a controller that is able to control the combustion process effectively in the whole range. Small-scale biomass-fired boilers are usually equipped with simple two-state (on/off) controllers. Many laboratories have attempted to develop a model of the combustion process suitable for controller setting and parameter adaptation, but the results are not yet satisfactory or generally valid. Thus, advanced model-based control strategies are not usable, while the use of a model-free controller is not excluded if well-designed tuning rules can be provided. An approach which tries to satisfy most of the requirements of industrial practice is presented in this paper, which is based on an experimentally performed evaluation of small amplitude excited frequency responses with the aim to achieve recommended values of one or more control quality indicator known e.g. from the course of the Nyquist plot. The indicators can be evaluated experimentally in control loops involving nonlinearities. In this sense, the method has a philosophy similar to that of the popular Ziegler and Nichols method, but no interruption of the control process is necessary and the amplitude of the excited oscillation can be set by operator. The main advantages of the method presented here are: there is no use of any mathematical model, it can be used as an addition to the existing controller purely by software, and there is no need to interrupt the control process while retuning the controller. ©2010
