controlling combustion processes is an important task, mainly with respect to energy efficiency and ecological impacts. This problem has become significant with the increased use of biomass-fired boilers, including low-power boilers. The combustion process is a process that we have limited information about. The equations for the chemical reactions are known, but in reality combustion of biomass is much more complicated and more variable than a mathematical model can express. It is therefore not simple to design a controller that is able to control the combustion process effectively in the whole range. Small-scale biomass-fired boilers are usually equipped with simple two-state (on/off) controllers. Many laboratories have attempted to develop a model of the combustion process suitable for controller setting and parameter adaptation, but the results are not yet satisfactory or generally valid. Thus, advanced model-based control strategies are not usable, while the use of a model-free controller is not excluded if well-designed tuning rules can be provided. An approach which tries to satisfy most of the requirements of industrial practice is presented in this paper, which is based on an experimentally performed evaluation of small amplitude excited frequency responses with the aim to achieve recommended values of one or more control quality indicator known e.g. from the course of the Nyquist plot. The indicators can be evaluated experimentally in control loops involving nonlinearities. In this sense, the method has a philosophy similar to that of the popular Ziegler and Nichols method, but no interruption of the control process is necessary and the amplitude of the excited oscillation can be set by operator. The main advantages of the method presented here are: there is no use of any mathematical model, it can be used as an addition to the existing controller purely by software, and there is no need to interrupt the control process while retuning the controller. ©2010

This project is the continuation of work reported previously at this conference (Yu, et. al., SPIE 2009). A new software tool for developing a static scanner fleet matching (SFM) matrix is tested including fleet snapshot and scanner pair drilldown. In addition the latest scanner models can adjust the distortion performance dynamically, at run-time, improving effective overlay performance of the scanner fleet, and allowing more flexibility for mix-and match exposure. The goal is to improve overlay |mean|+3s significantly between scanners for critical layer pairs. © 2010 Copyright SPIE - The International Society for Optical Engineering.

A remote controlled robotic arm has been designed and fabricated for the purpose of remote monitoring of plant tissue growth in research projects conducted by Plant & Food Research Limited, New Zealand. The robotic arm consists of a light weight aluminum tubing with low voltage, high torque servo motors providing the movements for the various joints. The arm can swivel 180 degrees on its base. A compact colour zoom camera, on a pan and tilt mount, is fixed to the end of the arm. Customised Visual Basic software has been developed to control the arm through a servo control board. The software can capture the plant images, including video sequences. The position of the arm and all camera operations can be remotely controlled, either from the GUI on the PC screen, or through a joystick. The arm can be programmed to move to predefined positions at set times and capture images automatically without the need for human input. The entire system has been made wireless using Zigbee transceivers. The system has been successfully tested in a laboratory environment.

A graduate-level engineering course in airborne sensor and control systems taught at the Czech Technical University in Prague under the title Board Information Systems takes a novel systematic and comprehensive approach to teaching airborne digital avionics systems, together with system certification and life-cycle operations. The course brings together materials from various sources to cover practical aspects of avionics systems ranging from design, prototyping, testing, certification and production through to maintenance. It prepares students to deal with a wide range of the type of real-world problems that they will meet in their professional careers. This is a required course offered in the 10th semester as a part of the study programme in Airborne Information and control instrumentation (AICI) by the Department of Measurement. The course was redesigned with new lecture content, practical exercises and field trips. The course evaluation survey results from 2008 and 2009 show that recent students have considered the course a valuable part of their curriculum, and that it has made them feel more competent in the field of digital avionics systems.

In order to comprise energy efficiency for electrical devices in homes, a smart grid-base AMI (advanced Metering Infrastructure), which checks electricity consumption and controls the electric energy used with the demand response technique, is necessary for remotely managing the load of the energy and power consumed. The smart controller calculates the amount of electricity consumed by customer on real time basis from the utility supplier like electric supply company. In this paper, we propose the hardware architecture and software of the smart controller for use as the platform in smart grid system. The smart controller is installed on the electric plug of the electric appliance. The smart controller grasps the electricity amount used in the electric appliance and delivers to the AMI / EMS (Energy Management Server). In addition, according to the electricity price change, the use of energy of the electric appliance is limited. It will also show that it is available to apply to home for efficiently controlling the electric energy consumption.

This article presents a generic digital control system for the stabilization of Radio Frequency (RF) fields used in particle accelerators, the Libera LLRF. Low Level RF (LLRF) systems have an important contribution in the overall performance of the accelerator since they are responsible for the control of amplitude and phase of electromagnetic fields inside the accelerating structures. The goal was to develop a high performance, small form factor system that uses the latest advances in technology. In order to fulfill these design goals Micro Telecommunications Computing Architecture (MicroTCA) and related standards were chosen as a basis for the system's hardware and software development. Results of hardware development are three different types of advanced Mezzanine Cards (AMC), Interconnection Board (ICB), chassis, backplane and replaceable fan modules. The AMC boards are LLRF application specific and have input/output ports for RF signals. In order to enable support for different RF frequencies, they also include replaceable RF circuits. The ICB implements the functions of a MicroTCA Carrier Hub (MCH) and acts as a COM Express carrier board for the mounted COM Express module. With its different ports at the front, the ICB enables local and remote operation and maintenance of the Libera LLRF. Chassis management is implemented according to the Intelligent Platform Management Interface (IPMI) protocol. The LLRF application software, which runs on the Linux operating system and includes a Graphical User Interface (GUI), enables the user to operate the system and monitor different types of RF signals.

The evolution and pervasiveness of PCs as cost-effective computing platforms and with more powerful software tools, has resulted in a virtual explosion in data acquisition, signal processing and control systems from laboratory to industry including field applications. PC based instrumentation has given new dimensions to the field of measurement and control. Concept of virtual instrumentation (W) is seen through the advanced PC based instrumentation, exploration of virtual instrumentation architecture helps in better implementation of complex tasks of current challenges in automation. This paper presents detailed architecture of virtual instrumentation and explore the same through implementation of CAB Test automation, VoCODER, ECG and QAM tasks and Lab VIEW (R) have been used for programming purpose. The presented architecture is a generalized approach which can be adapted towards real time implementation of other industrial applications on VI platform.
