Today's businesses depend heavily on electrical services for lighting, general power, computer hardware and communications hardware. With the generalized use of sophisticated electronic devices, industries are shifting toward almost entirely electronic IT systems. PQ events are of increasing concern for the economy because today's equipment, particularly computers and automated manufacturing devices, is highly sensitive to such imperfections. Traditionally the control and supervision of a plant distribution network has mainly been focused on the protection of the network. Relatively little attention has been focused on the quality of the electrical energy. Metering technologies and communications systems have advanced to enable the development of web-based sensors. Power Quality is one area where these smart sensors can be very valuable. This paper investigates the challenges and possibilities in the development of distributed PQ measurement systems. This paper describes the challenges and lessons learned from this work.

News from the ANTARES underwater neutrino telescope

The ANTARES telescope is a device of 0.1 km(2) size to detect high energy neutrinos. It is located in the Mediterranean Sea at a depth of 2500 m. It consists of a three-dimensional matrix of optical modules (OM) containing photomultiplier tubes. As of September 2006 two complete lines and an instrumentation line, called MILOM, are deployed and fully operational for data taking. Three additional lines have been connected by the end of January 2007 allowing the first up-going muon track reconstruction. At the beginning of 2008, the full Antares telescope will be operational with 12 lines. All technical aspects are under control from the mechanical architecture to the constant improvement of the "all-data-to-shore" concept. This talk will focus on the photon signal processing that allows to reconstruct the neutrino track. After a first review of the line architecture, we will present the signal processing and transport from the OM detector to the on-shore storage. During the R&D phases, the ANTARES collaboration has developed new concepts in terms of detector integration, front-end electronics architecture, cables, DAQ hardware architecture and software management. This paper reviews analytical models and software for sound propagation modelling and prediction, including room acoustics and outdoor sound propagation, and current instrumentation for sound measurement. Based on the review of the state-of-the-art for acoustic modelling and sound measurement instrumentation, emerging challenges are discussed. Finally, the paper proposes new instrument development using 3D sound-field sensor arrays and 1D/2D acoustic sensor arrays incorporated with sensor networks for soundscape investigation and further applications.

The paper deals with a system developed to analyze human Auditory Evoked Potentials for health screening purposes. It offers the possibility to generate different stimuli and to perform various procedures referred to different types of evoked potential. The system has been assembled by combining traditional devices (i.e. signal generator, oscilloscope) and ad-hoc designed ones (i.e. calibrated amplifiers and attenuators). The implemented software has been developed with Labview (c) and offers suitable routines for the optimization of stimuli generation and data acquisition, providing advanced algorithms to perform signal analysis and post-processing.

In this work the flow control in a single stage absorption heat pump (SSAHP) is shown, in particular case for the water - Carrol (TM) absorption pair, and the operating conditions of the system are calculated. The dimensionless tendencies of powers are shown as a function of the final temperature of revaluation from waste energy. The used software is described for the temperature sensors calibration, as well as the software for in - line calculations of powers and mass flows into the thermodynamic cycle. Finally, a correlation for working fluid control into the Laboratory absorption heat pump is shown.

This paper will report on efforts to automatically calibrate in situ a phase-diversity (PD) wavefront sensing and control (WFS&C) system, the results of which are demonstrated on the General Dynamics advanced Information System's (GDAIS') QuickStar testbed(1), a dual deformable-mirror (DM) system which operates at 100Hz sampling rate. The iterative automatic calibration (AutoCal) process includes both coarse and fine calibration modes, initial closed-loop flattening of the commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) DMs, estimation of the system's static wavefront - including DM print-through, determination of PD-derived actuator influence functions, formulating the resulting system matrix and the resulting for-ward-model parameters. Analyses of the system after the calibration routines shows low-order WFS accuracy of similar to 0.005 lambda RMS and closed-loop residual wavefront measurement of similar to 0.002 lambda. All of these results were accomplished with a software package that takes on the order of one hour to operate.

Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) offer a powerful alternative to Application Specific Integrated Circuits (ASIC) or general purpose processors in accelerator control applications. software development for these devices can be awkward and time consuming, however, when using low level hardware design languages. To facilitate the use of FPGAs in control systems we are developing a library of software tools based on ImpulseC, a high level subset of the C language specifically designed for FPGA programming. Development and testing of the software will be performed on a Xilinx Virtex-4 FPGA demo board. Here we present initial results of algorithms of relevance to controls applications implemented in Impulse C. ©2007 IEEE.

NASA's Solar-Terrestrial Relations Observatory (STEREO) was launched in October 2006 carrying an advanced payload of imaging and in situ instrumentation designed to study coronal mass ejections and associated solar energetic particle (SEP) events and interplanetary effects. Included in the payload is a Low Energy telescope (LET) designed to measure SEP composition, energy spectra, and anisotropies. This paper describes the LET sensor and measurements of the large solar eruptions of December 2006. These unexpected events fortunately provided opportunities to test the LET hardware and software and to cross-calibrate the LETs and several near-Earth instruments.

Enhanced self-spacing algorithm for three-degree decelerating approaches

A current trend in aircraft noise abatement around airports is exploiting the benefits of revised arrival and approach procedures with computational aids, such as onboard and ground-based trajectory prediction algorithms and displays. The challenge for these upcoming advanced noise abatement procedures is to mitigate the noise impact without sacrificing runway capacity. A proposed solution, implemented in the three-degree decelerating approach, is to delegate the task of spacing the aircraft to the cockpit during the approach. To assist the pilots, a flap scheduling algorithm with complementary interface has been developed that takes noise nuisance and in-trail spacing into account. The design and functionality of this support system is presented and evaluated with three experiments. Monte Carlo simulations indicated adequate and consistent performance and robustness of the self-spacing algorithm for various wind and traffic scenarios. A pilot-in-the-loop simulator experiment verified that, with the aid of the algorithm, pilots were able to execute the noise abatement procedure consistently while maintaining safe spacing. The support system reduced pilot workload up to an effort level comparable to current standard approaches. The concept was demonstrated in flight, which confirmed the conflict-free performance benefits and the feasibility of self-spacing during continuous decelerating/descent approaches under actual flight conditions.

With the development of fluorescence spectroscopy, multicenter clinical trials are becoming more common both in the academic and commercial arenas. To ensure the quality of quantitative and device independent results, standardization of the tissue spectra is essential for the comparison of data from various groups. An added concern is the potential degradation of instrumentation during a trial which may affect the instrument's ability to accurately represent the tissue spectra. Our group has recently completed a Phase 11 clinical trial for the detection of cervical neoplasia using two different generations of spectroscopic devices at multiple sites. Both positive and negative optical standards were used to calibrate the tissue spectra as well as aid in the diagnosis of potential instrumentation problems during the trial. We have also conducted a cross validation study of fiber optic probes, spectroscopic devices, and optical standards for the latest generation of devices. The spectroscopic data of optical standards were analyzed for both the clinical trial and cross validation studies. Results demonstrated perceptible differences in optical standards data between the two generations of spectroscopy devices in the clinical trial, as well as the cross validation study with multiple devices of the same generation. Although the spectra were unexpectedly different, tissue spectra measured with the different systems can be empirically corrected by use of the various optical standards. Device performance during the clinical trial also was a concern;however, with the use of optical calibration standards, instrumentation problems were easily identified. To eliminate the problems associated with instrumentation, we have recently developed real-time quality assurance software to assess the optical calibration standards immediately after acquisition.
