Linking ground based telescopes with astronomical satellites, and using the emerging field of intelligent agent architectures to provide crucial autonomous decision making in software, we have combined data archives and research class robotic telescopes along with distributed computing nodes to build an ad-hoc peer-to-peer hetero-geneous network of resources. The eSTAR Project* uses intelligent agent technologies to carry out resource discovery, submit observation requests and analyze the reduced data returned from a meta-network of robotic telescopes. We present the current operations paradigm of the eSTAR network and describe the direction of in which the project intends to develop over the next several years. We also discuss the challenges facing the project, including the very real sociological one of user acceptance.

LINC-NIRVANA is the IR Fizeau interferometric imager of the Large Binocular telescope (LBT) in Arizona. Here we describe in particular the design, realization and preliminary tests of the so-called Patrol Camera. It can image (in the range 600-900 nm) the same 2 arcmin FoV seen by the Medium- High-Wavefront Sensor (MHWS), adequately sampled to provide the MHWS star enlargers with the positions of the F6V stars with an accuracy of 0.1 arcsec. To this aim a diffraction-limited performance is not required, while a distortion free focal plane is needed to provide a suitable astrometric output. Two identical systems will be realized, one for each single arm, which corresponds to each single telescope. We give here the details concerning the optical and mechanical design, as well as the CCD and the control system. The interfaces with LINGNIRVANA are also presented both in terms of matching the carbon fiber optical bench and developing of suitable software procedures. Since the major components have been already gathered, the laboratory tests and the integration are currently in progress.

The purpose of this paper is to discuss the continuing development of a unique electrical power class taken by students in BSET program. The class is formally named Electrical Power Systems and is part of the four-year control and instrumentation Technology program at the University of Houston Downtown (UHD) in Houston, Texas. Continuing development of the electrical power systems course includes the knowledge and application of Lab VIEW software for various virtual exercises and projects. Included in the class are many actual electrical power control projects that range from the initial studies of the basics of electrical power systems and Lab VIEW to the final advanced capstone project design. Many of the class students work in industry in various related professions. Also, the class students have varied technical experience level and background of academics. The proceeding two elements make the class both challenging and interesting to teach. The students in the class first become acquainted with the Lab VIEW software by using newly developed handouts and reference materials that contain explanations of the actual practical design projects. A feature that makes these class studies unique is the heavy use of group efforts and interaction of the groups on the many software projects. Also unique in the class is the fact that design exercises are used extensively throughout the entire course. In addition, there is a capstone project for the course. The innovative software exercises and projects that have been developed for the Electrical Power Systems courses are given. © American Society for Engineering Education, 2006.

The hardware and software platform dedicated for design of fault tolerant control (FTC) systems was created in Institute of Automatic control and Robotics at Warsaw University of Technology. It consists of the hydraulic installation equipped with Emmerson's instrumentation (introduction of many artificial faults is possible), DeltaV-control system and AMandD-advanced Monitoring and Diagnostic system. Fault tolerance of certain automatic control system elements, such as sensors, controllers, actuators as well as process components consist of distribution of functional redundancy between PLC controllers and supervision stations. Appropriate control algorithms foreseen for different faulty situations can be prepared useing the platform and can be implemented in to PLC controllers.

This research adopted Personal Computer Transient Analyzer- advanced Boiling Water Reactor version (PCTran-ABWR) simulation computer code to analyze the software safety issue for a generic ABWR. A number of postulated instrumentation and control (I&C) system software failure events were derived to perform the dynamic analyses. The basis of event derivation includes the published classification for software anomalies, the digital I&C design data of ABWR, chapter 15 accident analysis of generic safety analysis report (SAR), and the reported nuclear power plant I&C software failure events. For the purpose of enhancing the ABWR major control systems simulation capability, this research incorporated MATLAB into PCTran-ABWR to improve the pressure control system, feedwater control system, recirculation control system, and automated power regulation control system. As a result, the software failure of these digital control systems can be properly simulated and analyzed. Moreover, via an internal tuning technique, the modified PCTran-ABWR can precisely reflect the characteristics of the power-core flow map. Hence, in addition to transient plots, the analysis results can then be demonstrated on the Power-Core Flow Map. The case study of this research includes (I) the software common mode failures analysis for the major digital control systems;and (2) postulated ABWR digital I&C software failure events derivation from the actual happening of non-ABWR digital I&C software failure events, which were reported to Licensee Event Report (LER) of US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (USNRC) or Incident Reporting System (1RS) of International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). These events were analyzed by PCTran-ABWR. Conflicts among plant status, computer status, and human cognitive status are successfully identified. LUCIFER (LBT NIR Spectrograph Utility with Camera and Integral-Field Unit for Extragalactic Research) is a NIR spectrograph and imager for the LBT (Large Binocular telescope) working in the wavelength range from 0.9 to 2.5 microns. Two instruments are built by a consortium of five German institutes (Landessternwarte Heidelberg (LSW), Max Planck Institut for Astronomy (MPIA), Max Planck Institut for Extraterrestric Physics (MPE), Astronomical Institut of the Ruhr-University Bochum (AIRUB) and Fachhochschule for Technics and Design Mannheim (FHTG). All major components for the first instrument have been manufactured or are in the final stage of procurement. While integration and testing of LUCIFER I started in spring 2006 at the MPIA in Heidelberg, the cryostat for LUCIFER 2 has been sent to the MPE in Garching for system integration tests of the MOS-unit and testing of the mask cabinet exchange. The control electronics for the basic instrument has been manufactured, the MOS control electronics has been integrated and is being debugged. The MOS control software is under development by AIRUB. Fabrication and integration of components for LUCIFER 2 have started.

Vapour generation through boiling is one of the most ubiquitous industrial processes. Vertical thermosyphon reboilers are frequently used to generate vapour at the base of distillation columns. Present design methods have the major emphasis on the process side (boiling). The heating of the vertical boiler is decoupled from the system. Additionally, most academic research has considered a single tube flow arrangement with controlled and uniform electrical heating. However, many applications in distillation are now using sub-atmospheric pressure operation (higher thermodynamic efficiency, reduced energy consumption, prevents thermal degradation, cheaper materials of construction and safe operation). The literature does not contain many references to this mode of operation and existing design techniques do no adequately cover sub-atmospheric pressure operation. The thermosyphon reboiler research facility at the University of Manchester in the Morton Laboratory comprises 50 tubes of 3 in thermal lengths (19.86 min ID) and 3 segmental baffles (TEMA E type shell and TEMA A type header) with steam condensing on the shell side, 2 large horizontal condensers with 106 and 196 tubes, both TEMA E type shells and B type headers. Vacuum is pulled on the process side and the shell side by means of two separate liquid ring pumps. The process fluid is water flowing in the tubes counter-current to the condensing steam in the shell side. The primary objective is to study the operation of the thermosyphon reboiler over the pressure range 0.1 bar - atmospheric. New additional instrumentation for temperature, pressure and flow measurements have been calibrated and installed. At the present time, the equipment is fully instrumented, re-insulated and has been successfully commissioned. An inexpensive unmanned sub-scale aircraft was developed to conduct frequent flight test experiments for research and demonstration of advanced dynamic modeling and control design concepts. This paper describes the aircraft, flight systems, flight operations, and data compatibility including details of some practical problems encountered and the solutions found. The aircraft, named Free-flying Aircraft for Sub-scale Experimental Research, or FASER, was outfitted with high-quality instrumentation to measure aircraft inputs and states, as well as vehicle health parameters. Flight data are stored onboard, but can also be telemetered to a ground station in real time for analysis. Commercial-off-the-shelf hardware and softv,are were used as often as possible. The flight computer is based on the PC 104 platform, and runs xPC-Target software. Extensive wind tunnel testing was conducted with the same aircraft used for flight testing, and a six degree-of-freedom simulation with nonlinear aerodynamics was developed to support flight tests. Flight tests to date have been conducted to mature the flight operations, validate the instrumentation, and check the flight data for kinematic consistency. Data compatibility analysis showed that the flight data are accurate and consistent after corrections are made for estimated systematic instrumentation errors.
