An inexpensive unmanned sub-scale aircraft was developed to conduct frequent flight test experiments for research and demonstration of advanced dynamic modeling and control design concepts. This paper describes the aircraft, flight systems, flight operations, and data compatibility including details of some practical problems encountered and the solutions found. The aircraft, named Free-flying Aircraft for Sub-scale Experimental Research, or FASER, was outfitted with high-quality instrumentation to measure aircraft inputs and states, as well as vehicle health parameters. Flight data are stored onboard, but can also be telemetered to a ground station in real time for analysis. Commercial-off-the-shelf hardware and softv,are were used as often as possible. The flight computer is based on the PC 104 platform, and runs xPC-Target software. Extensive wind tunnel testing was conducted with the same aircraft used for flight testing, and a six degree-of-freedom simulation with nonlinear aerodynamics was developed to support flight tests. Flight tests to date have been conducted to mature the flight operations, validate the instrumentation, and check the flight data for kinematic consistency. Data compatibility analysis showed that the flight data are accurate and consistent after corrections are made for estimated systematic instrumentation errors.

In the evolution of digital control systems, inherent processing capability has skyrocketed in the last decade. This is due to the availability of the same powerful processors, used in home/office computers, used in these control systems. The processes being controlled are typically field device limited in terms of speed of response;today's processors can provide logic control, I/O scanning and other main functions far faster than the field can respond. This "latent" excess processing capacity within the digital control systems presents opportunities to take on new tasks that now reside in servers or other stand-alone processing devices. Plant performance monitoring, maintenance monitoring, and other asset management functions can now reside fully within the same hardware platform as that being used for actual process control. There is already a body of work within academia that identifies a similar trend (peer-to-peer or grid computing) in latent/underutilized processor capacity within networks that can be harnessed for solving massively complex analysis in many research applications and within various industries. The use of the latent capacity of the DCS in some aspects mirrors the approach within the academic studies. The author show why and how the plant DCS can and should be looked at no longer as simply the implementation of process control logic (optimized by another stand-alone device), but also as the decision-making tools (i.e. software tools) that enhance plant performance, unit dispatch, and other functions that can and should be embedded in the control system itself. This way, operational decision-making (i.e. business decision making) can become far more real time and far more meaningful with the ability to instantly understand the commercial (read profitability) impact.

This research adopted personal computer transient analyzer-advanced boiling water reactor version (PCTran-ABWR) simulation computer code to analyze the software safety issue for a generic ABWR. A number of postulated instrumentation and control (I&C) system software failure events were derived to perform the dynamic analyses. The basis of event derivation includes the published classification for software anomalies, the digital I&C design data of ABWR, chapter 15 accident analysis of generic safety analysis report (SAR), and the reported nuclear power plant I&C software failure events. For the purpose of enhancing the ABWR major control systems simulation capability, this research incorporated MATLAB into PCTran-ABWR to improve the pressure control system, feedwater control system, recirculation control system, and automated power regulation control system. As a result, the software failure of these digital control systems can be properly simulated and analyzed. Moreover, via an internal tuning technique, the modified PCTran-ABWR can precisely reflect the characteristics of the power-core flow map. Hence, in addition to transient plots, the analysis results can then be demonstrated on the power-core flow map. The case study of this research includes: (1) the software common mode failures analysis for the major digital control systems; and (2) postulated ABWR digital I&C software failure events derivation from the actual happening of non-ABWR digital I&C software failure events, which were reported to Licensee Event Report (LER) of US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (USNRC) or Incident Reporting System (IRS) of International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). These events were analyzed by PCTran-ABWR. Conflicts among plant status, computer status, and human cognitive status are successfully identified. The requirements of space and defence optical systems and ground-based astronomy (especially extremely large telescopes) are providing optical fabricators with new challenges. These challenges particularly concern process speed, determinism and automation, and tighter tolerances on surface form and texture. Moreover, there is a growing demand for complex off-axis and 'freeform' surfaces and for larger components of the similar to 1 in scale. With this in view, we first report on form-correction on a smaller analogue of the IRP1200 - an IRP400 in service in industry. We then report on the design, commissioning and preliminary process-development results from the first of the scaled-up 1.2m capacity CNC polishing machine from Zeeko, Ltd. This machine delivers the 'Classic' bonnet-based process, together with two new processes - fluid-jet polishing and the hybrid soft-grinding/polishing process called 'Zeeko-Grolish.' We indicate how this trio of processes running on the same machine platform with unified software can provide an unprecedented dynamic range in both volumetric removal rate and removal spot-size. This leads into a discussion of how these processes may be brought to bear on optimal control of texture and form. Preliminary performance of the 1.2m machine is illustrated with results on both axially-symmetric and more complex removal regimes. The paper concludes with an overview of the relevance of the technology to efficient production of instrumentation-optics, space optics and segmented telescope mirrors.

Raytheon's Santa Barbara Remote Sensing (SBRS) division designed and built the MTSAT-1R Japanese advanced Meteorological Imager for the Japanese Ministry of Transport between March, 1999 and July, 2002. In order to meet the stressing requirements of a geosynchronous orbit, a combination of structural, thermal, and optical (STOP) analyses were used to design and optimize the beryllium three-mirror anastigmat (TMA) telescope. This modeling approach was used to characterize and minimize the thermal distortion around local midnight. On-orbit temperatures and structural deformations were predicted using thermal Desktop/SINDA and PATRAN/NASTRAN software, respectively. The resulting optical performance was evaluated using Raytheon developed HEXAGON software. The telescope design was successfully optimized to attain specified visible channel performance for most of the 24 hour orbit.

Raytheon's Santa Barbara Remote Sensing facility in Goleta, California designed and built an advanced meteorological imager for the Japanese Ministry of Transport between March, 2000 and July, 2002 for MTSAT-1R. One of the most stressing requirements is visible band image quality near local midnight. The 30 month program schedule forced the design team to make key decisions about the telescope design based on very preliminary analyses. Subsequent detailed analyses revealed that thermal distortions in the beryllium three-mirror anastigmat telescope would cause unacceptable performance degradation during much of the orbit. Through careful thermal, structural, and optical (STOP) analysis, the design team was able to optimize the designs of the telescope and thermal control system while meeting the challenging procurement schedule for the telescope.

The tragic loss of Space Shuttle Columbia threw the future of Hubble Space telescope (HST) in doubt. The Columbia Accident Investigation Board report led NASA to the realization that astronauts must have someplace to go on orbit if the Shuttle is damaged, a requirement that cannot be met for a manned HST mission. Yet missions to HST are required, since HST was designed to be serviced periodically. To address this problem, NASA is developing a robotic servicing mission to Hubble. On-orbit rendezvous and docking under tele-robotic or fully autonomous control involves a number of challenges that have not been fully resolved. One key challenge is how to bring two craft together in precise alignment to each other without an experienced astronaut on board. For this to be possible, sensors are needed to report relative distance, bearing, and orientation. At advanced Optical Systems (AOS), we have applied our ULTOR (TM) digital correlation system to the Hubble repair mission. The ULTOR (TM) system operates at approximately 10 Hertz and can accurately determine the relative distance, bearing, and orientation needed for semi- or fully-autonomous docking to HST. The system can operate using the HST berthing target or other features, including the HST itself. It is small and light enough to be placed on the servicing craft, thus avoiding orbit-to-ground communication latency issues. We will discuss the results of our testing with computer-generated imagery of the HST and with any hardware-in-the-loop simulations.

To attain quick turn-around time (TAT) and high yield, it is very important to remove all the problems affecting the semiconductor volume production line. For this purpose, we have used a lithography management system (LMS) as an advanced process control system. The LMS stores the critical dimension and overlay inspection results as well as the log data of the exposure tool in a relational database. This enables a quick and efficient grasp of the productivity under the present conditions and helps to identify the causes of errors. Furthermore, we developed a mining tool, called a log data extraction and correlation miner (LMS-LEC), for factor analysis on the LMS. Despite low correlation between all data, a high correlation may exist between parameters in a certain data domain. The LMS-LEC can mine such correlations easily. With this tool, we can discover previously unknown error sources that have been buried in the vast quantity of data handled by the LMS and thereby increase of the effectiveness of the exposure and inspection tool. The LMS-LEC is an extremely useful software mining tool for "equipment health" monitoring, advanced fault detection, and sophisticated data analysis.

Possible approaches to control system design for flexible vehicles of different types, and also principles of the universal software development for control system synthesis in frequency domain and in the state space, investigation of dynamic properties and modeling of motion for such vehicles are observed. At the mathematical description of controlled vehicles the structural flexibility and also other significant physical effects, for example, oscillations of liquid in cavities, time lag of engines, local aerodynamic loads, etc. are taken into account. Availability of the program modules library allows investigating influence of such physical effects on dynamic properties of known and prospective flexible vehicles of different kinds. Examples of control systems design for flexible aerospace vehicles are considered.
