The Joint Advance Missile instrumentation (JAMI) program has developed a Time Space Position Information (TSPI) unit (JTU). The JTU employs a novel use of Global Positioning System (GPS) technology, and inertial measurement units (IMU) to provide a real time trajectory for high dynamic missile systems. The GPS system can function during high g maneuvers that an air-to-air missile might encounter. The IMU is decoupled from the GPS sensor. The IMU data is a secondary navigation source for the JTU and will provide platform attitude. The GPS data and IMU data are sent to the ground in telemetry packet called TSPI Unit Message Structure (TUMS). The TUMS packet is sent to a computer that hosts the JAMI Data Processing (JDP) software, which performs a Kalmam filter on the GPS and IMU data to provide a real time TSPI solution to the range displays. The packetized TUMS data is available in three different output formats: RS-232 serial data, 16-bit parallel and PCM. This paper focuses on how to integrate the JTU into a telemetry system, use it as a standalone system, and provides examples of possible uses.

The integration of intelligent devices, devices-level networks, and software into motor control systems can deliver improved diagnostics, fast warnings for increased system reliability, design flexibility, and simplified wiring. Remote access to motor-control information also affords an opportunity for reduced exposure to hazardous voltage and improved personnel safety during startup and troubleshooting. This paper presents LonWorks fieldbus networked intelligent induction control system architecture. Experimental bed system with two inverter motor driving system for controlling 1.5kW induction motor is configured for LonWorks networked intelligent motor control. In recent years, MCCs have evolved to include component technologies, such as variable-speed drives, solid-state starters, and electronic overload relays. Integration was accomplished through hardwiring to a programmable logic controller (PLC) or distributed control system (DCS). Device-level communication networks brought new possibilities for advanced monitoring, control and diagnostics. This LonWorks network offered the opportunity for greatly simplified wiring, eliminating the bundles of control interwiring and corresponding complex interwiring diagrams. An intelligent MCC connected in device level control network proves users with significant new information for preventing or minimizing downtime. This information includes warnings of abnormal operation, identification of trip causes, automated logging of events, and electronic documentation. In order to show the application of the multi-motors control system, the prototype control system is implemented. This paper is the first step to drive multi-motors with serial communication which can satisfy the real time operation using LonWorks network.

The ability to accurately measure the temperature of different materials has always been a challenge for the instrumentation Engineer. The use the classic contact type temperature detector such as thermocouples or RTD's (Resistance Temperature Detectors) has not always shown to be the best approach to obtain the expected measurement. When not used carefully in closed environments, thermocouples and RTD's could report the environmental temperature rather than the temperature from the product under examination. They are also temperature limited and when needed for applications above those limits, very expensive and low reliable materials are necessary to do the job. The use of non-contact thermometers has become the preferred choice for such applications. They have also come as a solution for the difficulties involved in the temperature measurements of moving targets. The industry has used portable and spot type infrared thermometers for some time, but the demand for better and more precise measurements has brought an incredible number of new products to the market. By means of advanced electronics and new software developments these products are used to cope with the difficulties of acquiring challenging measurements. Some of the same demands have made necessary the use of non-contact temperature measurement devices on aircraft instrumentation applications. The use of these capabilities has allowed the data acquisition community to get valuable data that was very difficult if not impossible to obtain before. In spite of all these facts, this promising emerging technology demands very careful attention before it is put to good use. The many products and solutions available do not accurately address every problem and the selection of the wrong technology for a specific task can prove to be fatal. This work gives a detailed description of some laboratory practices about SCADA/HMI systems developed for didactic purposes for various undergraduate courses at the 1st Engineering Faculty of Polytechnic of Bari, Department of Electrics and Electronics (Italy); they consider the use of National Instruments LabVIEWreg with the associated data logging and supervisory control toolset (DSCreg) to develop the SCADA/HMI portion (operator's interface and data logging) of a software simulated industrial plant consisting of a vessel with charge and discharge proportional valves, a heating/cooling element, a level sensor and two flow rate sensors. The control of this plant can be done in two different ways, according to the difficulty level of the practice: by way of a LabVIEW VI or by way of a ladder program written with RSLogix 5/500 and emulated by RSLogix Emulate 5/500 (both are Rockwell software's products, the first being the ladder software development environment for PLC-5/SLC500 family of industrial programmable logic controllers (PLCs) from Allen Bradley and the second being the related software emulator).

Possible approaches to the mathematical description of different types of flexible objects in view of oscillations of liquid and driving weights inside object are observed. Elastic bending of a surface of object and interacting with a surround medium in a broad band of an variation of speed are taken into account. Problems of a synthesis of regulators for control of such objects, parrying of elastic vibrations, and also principles of construction of the universal software for research of dynamic properties and simulations of motion of elastic objects are considered. For implementation of offered methods and algorithms the specialized program is designed. The program is supplied with the program modules library. These modules are designed on the base of mathematical models of the object elements and control system, and also significant physical effects such as flexibility, liquid oscillations, time lag of engines, local aerodynamic effects, etc. Activity of the program is demonstrated and outcomes of calculations are resulted.

The advanced Technology Solar telescope (ATST) is intended to be the premier solar observatory for experimental solar physics. The ATST telescope control software is designed to operate similar to current nighttime telescopes, F but will contain added functionality required for solar observations. These additions include the use of solar coordinate systems, non-sidereal track rates, solar rotation models, alternate guide signal sources, the control of thermal loads on the telescope, unusual observation and calibration motions, and serendipitous acquisition of transient objects. These requirements have resulted in a design for the ATST telescope control system (TCS) that is flexible and well-adapted or solar physics experiments. This report discusses both the classical desig of the ATST TCS and the design modifications required to observe in a solar physics environment. The control and servo loops required to operate both the pointing and wavefront correction systems are explained.

The VISTA wide field survey telescope will be operated and maintained from 2006 by ESO at their Cerro Paranal Observatory. To minimise both development costs and operational costs, the telescope's software will reuse software from the VLT wherever feasible. Some software modules will be reused without modification, others will include modifications or enhancements and yet others will be complete rewrites or completely new. This paper examines the methods used in the software development process to integrate existing and new software in a transparent and maintainable manner. On the basis of the work so far performed, some lessons are presented for the reuse of VLT software for a new telescope by an organisation without previous knowledge of VLT software.

The 4.1 meter SOuthern Astrophysical Research (SOAR) telescope is now entering the operations phase, after a period of construction and system commissioning. The SOAR TCS implemented in the LabVIEW software package, has kept pace throughout development with the installation of the other telescope subsystems, and has proven to be a key component for the successful deployment of SOAR. In this third article of the SOAR TCS series, we present the results achieved when operating the SOAR telescope under control of the SOAR TCS software. A review is made of the design considerations and the implementations details, followed by a presentation of the software extensions that allows a seamless integration of instruments into the system, as well as the programming techniques that permit the execution of remote observing procedures.

The Discovery Channel telescope control system incorporates very demanding requirements regarding fast serviceability and remote operation of the telescope itself as well as facility management tools and security systems. All system capabilities are accessible from a central user interface anywhere, anytime. Although the mature stage of telescope control technology allows focusing more on science rather than on telescope operation, the time and effort needed to integrate a large suite of software modules still impose a challenge to which reusing existing software is one of the answers, especially for advanced subsystems with distributed collaborative development teams. DCT's large CCD camera presents enormous computational problems due to the overwhelming amount of generated data. Properly implemented preventive maintenance and reliability aspects of telescope operation call for historical and real time data in order to determine behavioral trends and permit early detection of failure factors. In this new approach utility monitoring and power conditioning and management are integral parts of the control system. Proposed real time spectral analysis system of sound and vibration of key mount components allows tracking mechanical component deterioration that could lead to performance degradation. Survival control cells and unmanned operation systems are other options being explored for operation in harsh climatic conditions.

The Large Sky Area Multi-Object Fibre Spectroscopic telescope (LAMOST) will be set up and tested. A fully automated software system for reducing and analyzing the spectra has to be developed before the telescope finished. Requirement analysis has been made and data model has been designed. The software design outline is given in this paper, including data design. architectural and component design and user interface design., as well as the database for this system. This paper also shows an example of algorithm, PCAZ, for redshift determination.
