The monitor and control system of a telescope must provide users with a way to control certain values in the system and view other constantly changing values. Users may also want to loo, system values to a database and chart changes to numerical values in real time. The components of a telescope system may change and instruments may be added and removed. The set of values that the monitor and control system must provide access to may therefore change. The challenge is to provide a flexible monitor and control system to accommodate changes to the system. The Large Millimeter telescope monitor and control system is automatically generated from a set of XML configuration files. Because the code for the system's software objects is generated automatically it is easy to include in the generated code sufficient information about the objects to inform the display. This paper will present monitor, control, logging and charting tools that automatically change to reflect changes in the components and properties of the system. These tools depend on generating software objects that include information about their own fields.

The Nasmyth Adaptive Optics for Multi-purpose instrumentation (NAOMI) is the common-user Adaptive Optics (AO) system on the 4.2m William Herschel telescope (WHT) operated by the Isaac Newton Group of telescopes (ING). The system contains a 76-element Deformable Mirror (DM) containing 228-degrees of freedom with Strain Gauge (SG) feedback capabilities and an 8x8 Shack Hartmann Wavefiront Sensor (ATS). The wavefront corrector and wavefront sensor are controlled and coordinated by the third key component of the adaptive optics system, the Real-Time control System (RTCS). The RTCS manages and processes interrupts and inputs including WFS image data and SG feedback signals. It also provides calculated drive signals for the system's DM and Fast Steering Mirror (FSM) as well as debug, visualisation and logging data to the user's workstation. This paper contains a description of both the control hardware and software architecture of the RTCS including the WFS and SG real-time control loops. Each loop contains 8 Texas Instrument TMS320C44 digital signal processors, housed on DBV44 cards seated inside the NAOMI Real-Time control Rack (RTCR) VME crate. A description of the complete processor architecture and ring structure is provided, detailing each processor's connections and external hardware communications. The described software architecture incorporates Bulk Synchronisation Parallelism (BSP) methodology, Interrupt Service Routines (ISRs), "General Purpose" (GP) messaging, Lovetrains, Cowcatchers, the Data Transfer Mechanism (DTM) and Parameter Block Transactions (PBT). The paper concludes with revealing planned enhancements to the current RTCS.

Solar activity is one of the main sources of space disturbances, which are primarily responsible for space disaster weather. Solar activity is concerned with 11 years period and has many exhibitions such as the change of sunspot's number and solar radio flux in 10.7cm wavelength. The 1.0-2.0 GHz, 2.6-3.8 GHz, and 5.2-7.6 GHz solar radio spectrometers and 2840 MHz solar radio telescope of National Astronomical Observatory in Huairou Solar Observational Station have got considerable radio flux data since 1999. In order to make further researches on solar action and develop space weather forecast, the real-time observed data should be well utilized. Therefore we designed the data acquisition, antenna control and real-time web-based database system for the 2840 MHz solar radio telescope. The paper introduces the whole design of a PCI-based data acquisition, antenna control and real-time web-based database system for the solar radio observation at HuaiRou in China. The popular PCI controller-PCI9052 is utilized to implement the interface between PCI bus and peripheral devices. PLD chip is applied for the data transferring and antenna control. The device driver of Windows is developed based on Driverworks and Windows DDK. The real-time database is based on MySQL and Apache.

The Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA) will. when it is completed in 2012, be the world's largest millimeter sub-millimeter radio telescope. It will consist of 64 antennas, each one 12 meters in diameter, connected as an interferometer. The ALMA Test Interferometer control System (TICS) was developed as a prototype for the ALMA control system. Its initial task was to provide sufficient functionality for the evaluation of the prototype antennas. The P main antenna evaluation tasks include surface measurements via holography and pointing accuracy, measured at both optical and millimeter wavelengths. In this paper we will present the design of TICS, which is a distributed computing environment. In the test facility there are four computers: three real-time computers running VxWorks (one on each antenna and a central one) and a master computer running Linux. These computers communicate via Ethernet, and each of , the real-time computers is connected to the hardware devices via an extension of the CAN bus. We will also discuss our experience with this system and outline changes we are making in light of our experiences.

AMBER (Astronomical Multiple BEam Recombiner) is a 3 aperture interferometric recombiner operating between 1 and 2.5 mum for the Very Large telescope Interferometer (VLTI). The control software of the instrument, based on the VLT Common software, has been written to comply with specific features of the AMBER hardware, such as the Infrared detector read out modes or piezo stage drivers, as well as with the very specific operation modes of an interferometric instrument. In this respect, the AMBER control software was designed to insure that all operations, from the preparation of the observations to the control/command of the instrument during the observations, would be kept as simple as possible for the users and operators, opening the use of an interferometric instrument to the largest community of astronomers. Peculiar attention was given to internal checks and calibration procedures both to evaluate data quality in real time, and improve the successes of long term UV plane coverage observations.

From research to product using a common development platform

This paper describes a hardware and software platform used to develop prototypes of advanced instrumentation in a university research environment. It consists of a commercial processor board, running a real-time operating system, linked to analogue electronics via a highly flexible field-programmable gate-array (FPGA). The use of Handel-C to configure the FPGA means that the prototypes are essentially 'software products' and that the intellectual property created is readily ported to commercial applications using components with appropriate price, performance and power consumption. Two examples, from the process and transport industries, demonstrate how the platform can be used to move from research prototype to near-commercial product. (C) 2003 Elsevier Ltd. Optimization of observation sequences is a function necessary to get high efficiency and reliability of observations. We have implemented scheduling software in the Subaru telescope observatory software system. The scheduling engine, Spike, developed at STScI is used with some modification for Subaru telescope. Since the last report at SPIE (Munich, 2000), new functions to Spike are implemented on 1) optimized arrangement of an observation dataset, which consists of a target object and related calibrations, and 2) flexible scheduling of standard stars selected out of a standard star list, which is fed to Spike as a part of observation datasets. Observation datasets with some necessary information, prepared by an observer, are input to the scheduling tools to be converted to Spike Lisp input forms. A schedule created by Spike is inversely converted to Subaru observation commands to be executed with the observation control system. These applications are operable with Web-based display. We present an overall structure of the scheduling tools with some samples of Subaru observation commands of target datasets and a resultant schedule.

More than three years have passed since Subaru telescope started its Open Use operation. Currently, more than 60% of the total telescope time is spent for scientific observation. Firstly, we define an index to measure how the telescope is effectively used. By using the index, we review the use of the telescope since 2000. Remote observation and queue observation is a long-term goal of Subaru operation because they are believed to be more efficient way to use the telescope and available resource. control and observation software has been designed and developed to achieve remote observation and queue observation. Currently, about 30% of the telescope time is used as remote observation. We will discuss how much remote observation has contributed to make the use of the telescope effective.

The successful development of any complex control system requires a blend of good software management, an appropriate computer architecture and good software engineering. Due to the large number of controlled parts, high performance goals and required operational efficiency, the control systems for large telescopes are particularly challenging to develop and maintain. In this paper the authors highlight some of the specific challenges that need to be met by control system developers to meet the requirements within a limited budget and schedule. They share some of the practices applied during the development of the Southern African Large telescope (SALT) and describe specific aspects of the design that contribute to meeting these challenges. The topics discussed include: development methodology, defining the level of system integration, computer architecture, interface management, software standards, language selection, user interface design and personnel selection. Time will reveal the full truth, but the authors believe that the significant progress achieved in commissioning SALT (now 6 months from telescope completion), can largely be attributed to the combined application of these practices and design concepts.
