The object oriented software design paradigm has been instrumental in the development of the Adoptics software used in the Hooker telescope's ADOPT adaptive optics system(1,2,3). The software runs on a Pentium-class PC host and eight DSP processors(4) connected to the host's motherboard bus. C++ classes were created to implement most of the host software's functionality, with the object oriented features of inheritance, encapsulation and abstraction being the most useful. Careful class design at the inception of the project allowed for the rapid addition of features without comprising the integrity of the software. Base class implementations include the DSP system, real-time graphical displays and opto-mechanical actuator control. Although the DSP software is written in C and assembler, the DSP system is exposed within the host's C++ software as a DSP system class, a DSP board class and a DSP site class. The DSP system class encapsulates the entire DSP system and is the single point of interface between that system and the host. All host user interface elements are implemented as classes built on the Borland OWL windowing class library. The most significant base classes in the host software are the real-time graphical display class and the opto-mechanical actuator control class.

The Ritchey-Chretien 1.2 m telescope (EULER) and the High-Resolution echelle Spectrograph (CORALIE), a new Sn iss observing facility at ESO La Silla Observatory, are operational since Summer 1998. The Observatory operation is fully automated and supports the unattended, attended and interactive mode of operation under local or remote control. The control hardware is based on Local control Units (LCU) built from PC/RedHat Linux computers and a Unix Computing Server. The Operational software (OS) is built around INTER, a command language interpreter featuring communication control, data access, image processing functions and easy access to external resources. The general SW architecture is a non-hierarchical tree of pairs made of hardware-independent interpreters running on the Observing Server and hardware dependent servers running on the LCUs. The Operational software includes the full access (Creation/Modification/Retrieval) to the input/output databases, telescope, instrument and auxiliary set-up and control files as well as a full data-reduction pipeline. We describe briefly the system architecture, summarize the performances and the experience gained over 18 months of operation and we discuss some critical issues: use of standard components, parallel operation, real-time requirements, system upgrade and maintenance.

Cassegrain Instrument Automatic eXchanger (CIAX) system for the Subaru telescope exchanges instruments between the Cassegrain flange and stand-by flanges using a transport cart on the observation floor. CIAX-3 is a sub-system that swaps three smaller instruments on the telescope flange. To maximize operation efficiency, the CIAX system communicates with the telescope control computers. The system consists of (1) CIAX control system: The software of the CIAX control system runs on a UNIX workstation (CIAX-WS) which communicates with two PCs running by Windows NT (CNTs) for the transport cart and the stand-by flanges by file sharing. Interlocks between the flanges and the cart are provided locally by CNTs located in each of the two stand-by rooms. The control software can be operated through telnet or from another software. (2) Transport cart: The cart travels along the routes defined by magnetic tapes and 12 magnetic tags. The tags at preset positions control three actions: slowing the speed, checking for runaway and interlocking. The cart has a wireless LAN. (3) Stand-by flanges: Stand-by flanges are controlled by Programmable Logic controllers (PLCs) and by CNTs through RS-232C. (4) CIAX-3: CIAX-3 is also controlled by a PLC linked through RS-232C to the CIAX-WS. Its power supply is controlled by another PLC and is shut down during observations. (5) control of other equipment: Automatic doors of the stand-by rooms, lighting, and pou er supply to instruments are controlled through I/O relays by a PC with LINUX (CLX), which also checks the proximity of the top of an instrument to the telescope or stand-by flange with potentiometers. This paper describes software of CLAX systems. Details of the CIAX system hardware are described elsewhere(1).

Traditionally, instrument command and control systems have been highly specialized, consisting mostly of custom code that is difficult to develop, maintain, and extend. Such solutions are initially very costly and are inflexible to subsequent engineering change requests, increasing software maintenance costs. Instrument description is too tightly coupled with details of implementation NASA Goddard Space Flight Center and AppNet, Inc. are developing a general and highly extensible framework that applies to any kind of instrument that can be controlled by a computer. The software architecture combines the platform independent processing capabilities of Java with the power of the Extensible Markup Language (XML), a human readable and machine understandable way to describe structured data. A key aspect of the object-oriented architecture is software that is driven by an instrument description. This description is written using the Astronomical instrument Markup Language (AIML), a domain specific implementation of the more generalized Instrument Markup Language (IML). IML is used to describe graphical user interfaces to control and monitor the instrument, command sets and command formats, data streams, communication mechanisms, and data processing algorithms. The current effort is targeted for the High-resolution Airborne Wideband Camera (HAWC), a first-light instrument of the Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA). A previous application of this technology was for the Spectral and Photometric imaging REceiver (SPIRE), one of the three focal plane instruments proposed for the European Space Agency's (ESA) Far Infrared Space telescope (FIRST).

This paper describes "The Automatic Report Generator" (AUTREP) used as engine to create daily and trend web reports about the telescopes and instruments operations at the Paranal Observatory. The input data for those reports are log files created on the telescope and instruments computers, by the components that make up the VLT software. Every day, the log files are sent via ftp to a repository computer, where they are stored for later processing by autrep. The autrep itself is a set of programs developed in C++ that, according to a configuration file, parse the log files and produce reports in a html format. All the above process is completely automatic and controlled by the UNIX cron utility. The reports consist of ascii data, html tables and graphs created using the PGPLOT Graphics subroutine library. The information produced by this tool can be divided into static and dynamic data. The static data correspond to a set of web pages for each day and host which contains for example: environment conditions, mirror movements, external seeing, exposures information, alarms, temperatures, etc., and dynamic data which can be queried on request based on the selections in a html form that is capable to produce from simple graphs until trend curves.

I present all the software that enables us to achieve observation and observatory management with maximum efficiency and with minimum human resource requirement. Also, My presentation will be focused to the policies and specifications for remote observation and proposal management systems that will eventually be a part of "observatory management database." Our unified telescope and instrument operation system implies that those who can control instruments can also control the telescope. Since the telescope operation is a sole responsibility of telescope operators, our remote observation system cannot allow remote observers to control instruments. Therefore, our remote observation system will comprise data browser, observation procedure editor and observation monitor. Proposal management system is a must tool for an observatory that accepts hundreds of proposals and handles hundreds of programs for either classical or queue/service observation in a single term. This system will include online proposal acceptance both for science merit and for technical feasibility, online Observation Data Set builder and online tutorial or help desk for applicants.

The Adoptics software used with the Hooker telescope's ADOPT adaptive optics system implements realtime control on a network of eight Texas Instruments C40 40Mhz DSP processors(1,2,3). System inputs and outputs consist of a 32 port 4 fiber wavefront sensor CCD with 32 x 32 pixels, a tip/tilt mirror and a deformable mirror of which 241 elements are actively controlled. The network of eight DSP processors is configured as two cross-connected rings of four processors each. Four input sites perform intensity and gradient calculations immediately on incoming pixels as well as passing pixels on to adjacent sites for parallel calculations. This parallelism makes Shack-Hartmann gradients and intensity sums available within 2 mu s after the last pixel in a CCD frame has arrived at the DSP system, when using a camera that reads out each frame in 256 mu s across 4 input streams simultaneously. A control matrix multiplication is distributed across all eight sites, with the processors' hardware DMA (Direct Memory Access) used to pipeline intersite and inter-ring data distribution. Following servo loop calculations DMA is used to transfer the deformable mirror actuator vector from the system to external electronics. The present architecture reliably supports a reconstructor update rate of 330 Hz. With modifications to the software only, this rate has been increased experimentally to 400 Hz.

Five per-cent of the observing time on the Liverpool telescope (a 2-m robotic telescope sited in La Palma) will be set aside for public understanding of science. Schools access will be via. a queue scheduling mechanism, and public access via live Planetarium shows. We describe the development and performance of a generic Java message passing system to allow communication between the processes implementing the robotic control of the telescope and the remote processes that will be run at the Planetarium. We also describe an adaptive data compression algorithm to allow transfer of data back from the telescope in near real time and our software for Planetarium access which allows staff at the Planetarium to implement their own control, system and display software. Finally we describe our hierarchical web-based system for schools to input observation requests and the image processing software we have developed to allow them to make quantitative measurements of the resulting data.

The Telescopio Nazionale Galileo (TNG) telescope is now operational. One of its main goals is to provide high quality images, in a wide range of operating conditions and for several observing modes. telescope pointing and tracking performances can heavily affect achievement of this requirement, and particular care must be taken in order to reach the highest possible accuracy. control of the three axes is implemented in one VME controller (minimising data exchange through the TNG LAN), and telescope mount positions are computed from object coordinates taking into account physical and environmental aspects which alter the object apparent position. Improvement of telescope pointing and tracking performances is obtained by two means. Systematic errors are mostly corrected using a model compensation, that can be introduced in the coordinates transformation now. The telescope model is derived by off-line analysis of the pointing errors on a specific set of data. In this way we could improve the pointing and tracking performances up to now by a factor of about 30. Tracking drift given by non-systematic and residuals of systematic errors is corrected using a guide camera, which mounts a 800x576 CCD (0.35 arcsec/pixel scale). Guide stars are selected from an on-line available star catalogue. Light from the selected star is focused an the guide camera by moving a probe housed in the rotator-adapter module. Tracking drift computation is performed on a two-axes scheme (Right Ascension and Declination), with sub-pixel accuracy. Here the first results of the telescope pointing and tracking accuracy are presented.

For CCD wavefront sensor pixel input and processing the Adoptics software in use at the Mt. Wilson 100-inch Hooker telescope utilizes hand-crafted assembly code to maximize use of the Texas Instruments C40 DSP processor's bandwidth. For flexibility the software is built around a conceptual framework that allows compact implementation of wavefront sensor-specific operations as well as adaptability to different CCD architectures. Designed for use in multi-DSP systems, such as those used at Mt. Wilson, the software framework will support many different DSP network topologies and facilitates distributing pixel-processing operations across the network. The code runs simultaneously on all 8 DSP sites of the ADOPT adaptive optics system(1,2,3) at Mt. Wilson and is part of one polymorphic executable. As with the C language software routines in this executable, the assembly code adapts itself to the requirements of the site on which it runs. Effective use of processor bandwidth is demonstrated most clearly during Shack-Hartmann gradient calculation. As implemented on the ADOPT system, the denominator-free(4) version of this calculation is performed as partial and final sums as pixels arrive, spreading the calculation over time. The result of all gradient calculations and the intensity sum for each frame are available within 2 mu S after the last pixel in a CCD frame has arrived at the DSP system, even when using a 32-port camera that reads out in 256 mu S.
