The Cassegrain Instrument Automatic eXchanger "CIAX" system for the 8.2 meter Subaru telescope moves instruments between the Cassegrain mounting flange and stand-by flanges without manual intervention. Observation efficiency improves not only because of quick exchanges, scheduled or emergency, but also because of increased flexibility in selecting an optimum instrument for weather conditions or observation goals. Reliable and safer instrument exchanges are achieved by the precision mechanical positioning system (less than 0.5 mm) and an automatic connector system for electrical cables, optical fibers and fluid lines. Instrument down time due to connector/cable failure by human error is eliminated. Interfaces to the telescope flange are standardized for all five Cassegrain instruments (approximately 2000 kgf each) currently in use or under preparation. The system consists of the following components: (1) Cart that transports an instrument between the telescope and the stand-by flanges in about 15 to 20 minutes using wireless LAN for remote control. (2) Four stand-by flanges in two rooms. Their mechanical and connector interfaces are identical to those of the telescope flange. (3) CIAX-3 sub-system that swaps three small instruments (approximately 300 or 150 kgf each) remotely in less than 10 minutes while on the telescope. The CIAX system is controlled by a workstation in the observation control room.

New framework of data analysis system (DASH) has been developed for the SUBARU telescope. It is designed using object-oriented methodology and adopted a restaurant model. DASH shares the load of CPU and I/O among distributed heterogeneous computers. The distributed object environment of the system is implemented with JAVA and CORBA. DASH has been evaluated by several prototypings. DASH2000 is the latest version, which will be released as the beta version of data analysis system for the SUBARU telescope. A pipeline process can be efficiently made using an editor that visually edits analysis procedure object (PROCube). PROCube manages information of input data, work data, processing engines, and log, together. A set of observed data could be automatically selected for a PROCube to analyze a specified object, using observational dataset generated by data acquisition and control system of the SUBARU telescope. DASH defines general interface for a data processing engine (task). DASH prepares a framework into which a task of traditional systems such as IRAF can be built. Moreover, the pipeline process made in DASH framework can be built into the real-time data acquisition system as a quick-look function. Small version of DASH (SASH) is also offered for a stand-alone computer environment. It can be manipulated by the same GUI as DASH2000. And it is enabled that a user continues data processing by SASH on a local computer after the user processes data by DASH2000 on the NAOJ's computer system.

Already in the early stages of the design of ESO's Very Large telescope (VLT) and its instruments, it became clear that the network technology in use at the La Silla Observatory could nor be simply extrapolated to cope with the VLT requirements. The new generation of instruments has needs for much higher throughput, and also the "remote" operation of four telescopes from a central control Building forced a new approach (see also Ref. 1). A very important aspect of the network is the topology, i.e. the physical wiring. From early on it was decided to go for structured cabling, using star topologies (reported in a separate paper, Ref. 5). On top of that, to avoid electromagnetic interference in a possibly noisy environment, we went exclusively for multi-mode fibres. These decisions have turned out to be protecting our investments, and on top of that allowed to postpone decisions about active network equipment and technologies to the last moment. Another critical aspect is the subnetting: identifying early on what the subnets are, allows a more precise analysis of the bandwidth requirements. Remark however that this has an impact on the software architecture (and vice versa), so there is a close collaboration needed in this area. As control messages for telescopes and instruments do not represent the bulk of data, they can easily be dealt with by standard Ethernet. This is not so for detector systems. they require far higher bandwidths, offered by ATM (with its established grow path) and nowadays Gigabit Ethernet as well. At the time the Paranal network design was frozen, a combination of ATM with standard Ethernet was chosen as the two technologies. This paper explains some of the historic backgrounds of our decisions, together with the final network lay-our for the control of the VLT, and some practical examples.

This paper concerns a class of adaptive optics problems in which phase distortions due to atmospheric turbulence are corrected by adaptive wavefront reconstruction with a deformable mirror-i.e., the control loop that drives the mirror adapts in real time to time-varying atmospheric conditions, as opposed to the linear time-invariant control loops used in conventional "adaptive optics." The basic problem is posed here as an adaptive disturbance rejection problem with many channels. The solution given here is to augment a linear time-invariant feedback control loop with an adaptive feedforward control loop based on a multichannel adaptive lattice filter. Simulation results are presented for a one-meter telescope with both single-layer and two-layer atmospheric turbulence profiles. These results demonstrate the significant improvement in imaging resolution produced by the adaptive control loop.

The Flight software (FSW) for the Hubble Space telescope (HIST) advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) is a complex, realtime, embedded software system. It is responsible for on-board command and telemetry processing instrument maintenance, detector and mechanism control, execution of scientific observations and science data collection - in other words, control of over $40,000,000 of hardware which is beyond the physical grasp of the ground system. To ensure reliable and expected performance, it is subject to an extensive test and integration process. The test program has matured from its first use during second generation Near-Infrared Camera Multi-Object Spectrometer (NICMOS) and Space telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS)FSW development, to a proven methodology currently used on ACS, a third generation instrument. The test philosophy has its foundation in solid software development practices, and most importantly, focuses on lengthy testing with high-fidelity flight and ground operations simulations and early integration with flight hardware. This paper will describe the test and integration process for the ACS FSW, with particular emphasis on the expectations at each level and the program resources required to meet those goals. We will provide quantitative measures of the benefits of the approach, using actual examples from ACS FSW test and integration. Finally, the paper will highlight the lessons learned and provide ideas which may be applied to future flight software development efforts.

In the summer of 1996, three study teams developed conceptual designs and mission architectures for the Next Generation Space telescope (NGST)(1,2). All three conceptual designs provided scientific capabilities that met or surpassed those envisioned by the Hubble Space telescope (HST) and Beyond Committee(3). Each group highlighted areas of technology development that need to be further advanced to meet the goals of the NGST mission. The most important areas for future study included: deployable structures, lightweight optics, cryogenic optics and mechanisms, passive cooling, and on-orbit closed loop wavefront sensing and control. NASA and industry are currently planning to develop a series of ground testbeds and validation nights to demonstrate many of these technologies. The Developmental Cryogenic Active telescope Testbed (DCATT) is a system level testbed to be developed at Goddard Space Flight Center in three phases over an extended period of time. This testbed will combine an actively controlled telescope with the hardware and software elements of a closed loop wavefront sensing and control system to achieve diffraction limited imaging at 2 microns. We will present an overview of the system level requirements, a discussion of the optical design, and results of performance analyses for the Phase 1 ambient concept for DCATT.

SVS has recently completed a phase ii small business innovative research (SBIR) project called Low Cost Space Imager (LCSI). As part of the SBIR project, a sparse aperture telescope design concept was developed. This design includes an optical control system capable of correcting the primary segments to within 38 nm piston and 17 mad tilt as required by the optical tolerance analysis. The optical system utilizes a common secondary and primaries arranged in a Golay-6 configuration. The primaries are spherical, which eliminates the need for translation and rotation control. A laboratory experiment to validate the controls concept has been completed. This experiment culminated in the demonstration of autonomous capture, alignment, and phasing of an optical system with a three segment primary to tolerances consistent with the space optical system. The implementation of the controls scheme in the laboratory experiment is done using Matlab/Simulink for controller design and code generation. The code is implemented real-time on a VME based computer system. Closed loop piston control, which utilizes a four-bin sensing scheme, of an actuated mirror to 25 nm RMS mirror motion has been demonstrated. Additionally, autonomous capture and phasing of three segmented primaries has been demonstrated. The technique for the phasing capture involves real-time implementation of image processing techniques to measure the white light fringe visibility in the far field.

The transmitted wavefronts of optical filters for the Hubble Space telescope (HST) advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) are characterized using the Wildly and Openly Modified Broadband Achromatic Twyman Green (WOMBAT) Interferometer developed in the NASA/GSFC Optics Branch's Diffraction Grating Evaluation Facility (DGEF).(1) Because only four of thirty-three of ACS's optical bandpass filters transmit the 633 nm light of most commercial interferometers, a broadband interferometer is required to verify specified transmitted wavefront of ACS filters. WOMBAT's design is a hybrid of the BAT(2) interferometer developed for JPL used for HST Wide field and Planetary Camera ii (WF/PC-2) filters and a WYKO 400 phase shifting interferometer. It includes a broadband light source, monochromator, off-axis, parabolic collimating and camera mirrors, an aluminum-coated fused silica beamsplitter, flat retroreflecting mirrors for the test and reference arms, and a UV-sensitive CCD camera. An outboarded, piezo-electric phase shifter holds the flat mirror in the interferometer's reference arm. The interferometer is calibrated through interaction between the WYKO system's software and WOMBAT hardware for the test wavelength of light entering the beamsplitter. Phase-shifted interferograms of the filter mounted in the test arm are analyzed using WYKO's Vision for Optical Testing(R) software. Filters as large as 90 mm in diameter have been measured over a wavelength range from 200 to 1100 nm with a sensitivity of lambda/200 rms at lambda = 633 nm. Results of transmitted wavefront measurements are shown for ACS fixed bandpass and spatially-variable bandpass filters for a variety of wavelengths.

Analog Sensor Processing Using Exposure control (ASPEC) is a new concept for high speed image processing. By using an addressable image array with integrating output amplifiers, signal processing can be performed directly on the sensor. The major gain in using ASPEC techniques is that the operations are fast, the approach can be implemented using existing hardware, and that the processing is executed in parallel on the sensor array. Furthermore, the data reduction is carried out early in the signal processing chain. In this paper we present a novel programmable camera architecture based on the CMS CMOS integrating addressable image sensor which is well suited for ASPEC applications.

At short wavelengths optical systems can be designed such that a single aperture defines the beam that is used (system light gathering power), and another (the system field stop) defines the field-of-view (FOV). These components define the beam envelope and all other components are oversized so that they do not 'clip' or vignette this envelope. At longer wavelengths the diffraction caused by such clipping can seriously degrade the FOV response function and cause an increase in stray-light background. It is thus even more desirable to avoid clipping the beam as it passes through an instrument by oversizing all the optical elements. In space borne instruments, however, accommodation constraints can turn such oversizing into an unaffordable luxury. Instrument design must therefore consider the impact of multiple beam clipping and in particular any degradation in the FOV function. In this paper we describe such an analysis, based ore advanced ray-tracing software, and give results for its application to two instruments: 1. The infra-red space observatory Long Wavelength Spectrometer (ISO-LWS, wavelength range 46-198 mu m), where the FOV response is modeled for use with on-board calibration and data retrieval. 2. The imaging photometer in the Far Infra-Red Space telescope SPIRE instrument (Spectral & Photometric Imaging Receiver, wavelength range 200-650 mu m), where the analysis is needed for (a) Tradeoff studies between instrument sensitivity (aperture size) and FOV degradation by clipping (b) Predicting the FOV performance of the final proposed design.
