Many telescope control systems now make use of the so-called 'virtual telescope' concept - a software abstraction of the real telescope which masks imperfections in the hardware from higher levels of the software. In general, this approach allows for elegant and rigorous control of telescope pointing and tracking. When slewing, however, while the virtual telescope arrives on source immediately, the real telescope only catches up after some time. This is especially a problem when performing raster-scanned observations: since the demand position and velocity have discontinuities at the end of each row, a naive implementation of the standard virtual telescope system results in missing the demand positions at the start of each row. In the existing JCMT telescope control system (TCS), this problem is solved by having the TCS calculate a route in (az,el) space for the real telescope to follow which results in it arriving at the correct position, moving with the correct velocity, at a predictable time in the future. In this paper we describe a generalized implementation of this technique, which has the added advantage that the 'astrometric kernel' and 'telescope servo' layers are cleanly separated, allowing telescope-specific hardware to be combined with a generic astrometric kernel. Since the solution requires only minimal changes to the standard virtual telescope design, this approach may be of interest to other telescopes which are currently using, or are planning to use that design.

As a technical demonstration project for the NASA advanced Communications Technology Satellite (ACTS), Ne have implemented remote observing on the 10-meter Keck ii telescope on Mauna Kea in Hawaii from the California Institute of Technology campus in Pasadena. The data connection consists of ATM networks in Hawaii and California, running at OC-1 speeds (51 Mbit/sec) through optical fiber, and high data rate (HDR) satellite antennae at JPL in Pasadena and at the Tripler Army Medical Center in Honolulu. The ACTS network provides sufficient bandwidth to enable true remote observing, with a software environment identical to that used for on-site observing. In this paper, Ne demonstrate that while the satellite link introduces a number of difficulties and decreases overall reliability of the system, remote observing is not only feasible, but provides several important advantages over standard observing paradigms. Benefits include involving more members of observing teams while decreasing expenses, enhancing real-time data analysis of observations by persons not subject to altitude-related conditions, and providing facilities, expertise, and personnel not normally available at the observing site. Although the current bandwidth of the public Internet is insufficient for true remote observing, rye nevertheless anticipate a growing role for remote observing techniques, particularly as high-speed terrestrial networking paradigms, such as ATM, become more commonly available.

We report on a design for a geosynchronous UV observatory optimized for imaging and spectrography of planets and comets. This Solar System telescope (SST), based on a commercially developed spacecraft, was proposed to NASA as a Discovery Mission. It can also serve as a low-cost orbiting observatory for other disciplines in space astronomy. The SST consists of a 140-cm-aperture telescope with an instrumentation section comprising four spectrographs and a wide-field UV imager. We use silicon carbide mirrors and a telescope structure provided by the Vavilov State Optical Institute in St. Petersburg, Russia. The spacecraft is derived from Lockheed Martin's Commercial Remote Sensing Satellite (CRSS), which provides attitude control, power, communications, and command and data handling, with minimal modifications. Using this approach, we were able to design an observatory with capabilities comparable to the Hubble Space telescope at approximately 1/20th the cost.

The new 8-meter class telescopes represent large investments by the development communities. This means that these telescopes must be operated efficiently to provide the best possible return on these investments and a great deal of effort has been made to provide control software that supports effective use of the telescopes. However, efficient use must be more than just keeping the telescopes operating;it is important that observers be provided tools that enable them work effectively. The Gemini 8m telescopes have developed a strategy for helping astronomers plan observations through the design of Science Programs. While there are a number of unique aspects to this strategy, this paper focuses on the methods used as the foundation for connecting astronomers to the facilities of the observatories during the design of Science Programs. The methods under development take advantage of emerging Internet technologies to help reduce the maintenance issues normally associated with supporting remote sites, while freeing users from many of the performance problems associated with web-based solutions.

A discussion of the interactive operator user interface developed for the Gemini 8-m telescopes is presented. Topics include the use of a layered synthesized view of the area of interest on the sky, a data driven approach to the control of the subsystems, and an adaptive view on the health of those subsystems. The synthesized view utilizes information from pre-existing databases;guide, wavefront and scientific detector image data;as well as operating and performance limits. This information is presented to the user in layers, with each layer containing an observer, subsystem or other logically oriented view. The ability to control which layers are presented, as well as which parameters are directly modifiable is vested in both the user and the configuration software. Implementing this above a data driven control interface encourages the use of observing templates. Exhaustive parameter control with parallel realization in the lower level mechanisms results in fast, fine grained and repeatable control. Combining the major control interfaces, each with a different view of the desired behavior, error in behavior, and possible corrections allows the operator to spend more time optimizing observations, rather than setting up equipment. Maximizing time with quality light falling on the science detectors is a primary goal.

Semiconductor fabrication requires an increasingly expensive and integrated set of tightly controlled processes, driving the need for a fabrication facility with fully computerized, networked processing equipment. We describe an integrated, open system architecture enabling distributed experimentation and process control for plasma etching. The system was developed at MIT's Microsystems Technology Laboratories and employs in-situ CCD interferometry based analysis in the sensor-feedback control of an Applied Materials Precision 5000 Plasma Etcher (AME5000). Our system supports accelerated, advanced research involving feedback control algorithms, and includes a distributed interface that utilizes the internet to make these fabrication capabilities available to remote users. The system architecture is both distributed and modular: specific implementation of any one task does not restrict the implementation of another. The low level architectural components include a host controller that communicates with the AME5000 equipment via SECS-ii, and a host controller for the acquisition and analysis of the CCD sensor images. A Cell controller (CC) manages communications between these equipment and sensor controllers. The CC is also responsible for process control decisions;algorithmic controllers may be integrated locally or via remote communications. Finally, a System Server manages connections from internet/intranet (web) based clients and uses a direct link with the CC to access the system. Each component communicates via a predefined set of TCP/IP socket based messages. This flexible architecture makes integration easier and more robust, and enables separate software components to run on the same or different computers independent of hardware or software platform.

VXI has matured into a flexible bus architecture with which to develop various types of instrumentation systems. More and more systems are being developed that require multiple chassis with dozens of instruments, each of which may perform a distinct yet important function to the system. This can place a tremendous burden on the system controller, especially if this same controller has to perform intensive graphic display updates, writes to the hard disk, printing functions, or other I/O Tasks. Modern computers in general, and PC-based computers in particular, have advanced to the point where some of this burden can be overcome by the sheer power of the processor. However, there are still many systems that would benefit from using a multi-computer approach. This paper details the multi-computer approach used in the VXIbased system that CACI developed for the Air Force. The system, the Engine Test/Trim Automated System ii (ETTAS ii) is designed to test all Air Force jet engines. The paper discusses how to integrate multiple computers in a VXI-based system, including discussions on: setting up the computers, selecting register-based versus message-based computers, setting up and using shared-memory, defining and separating tasks for each computer. The shared memory discussion talks about different ways to structure the shared memory, including setting up a system-level "Current-Value Table" (CVT) for all instruments, as well as how other devices, including another computer can access the shared memory space. The paper shows how Commercial Off-the-Shelf(COTS) software products NI-VXI LabVIEW; and NI-VISA (National Instruments) can be used to satisfy all these requirements. The paper also shows how the multi-computer approach can be cost-effective in many cases.

The Arnold Engineering Development Center (AEDC) scene generation test capability (SGTC) program has completed the development of a laser based direct write scene generation (DWSG) facility that provides dynamic mission simulation testing for infrared (IR) focal plane arrays (FPAs) and their associated signal processing electronics. The AEDC DWSG focal plane array test capability (FPATC) includes lasers operating at 0.514, 1.06, 5.4, or 10.6 micrometer, and acousto-optic deflectors (AODs) which modulate the laser beam position and amplitude. Complex radio frequency (rf) electronics controls each AOD by providing multi-frequency inputs. These inputs produce a highly accurate and independent multi-beam deflection or 'rake,' that is swept across the FPA sensor under test. Each rf amplitude input to an AOD translates into an accurate and independent beam intensity in the rake. Issues such as scene fidelity, sensor frame rates, scenario length, and real-time laser beam position adjustments require rf control electronics that employs the use of advanced analog and digital signal processing techniques and designs. By implementing flexible system architectures in the electronics, the overall capability of the DWSG to adapt to emerging test requirement is greatly enhanced. Presented in this paper is an overview of the signal processing methodology and designs required to handle the DWSG requirement. Further, the paper summarizes the current status of recent AEDC technology efforts tasked with the implementation of real-time and closed-loop scene manipulation including sensor optical simulation using the DWSG. The paper describes a proof-of-principle (PoP) demonstration which used high speed digital signal processors inherent in the DWSG electronic design to compute the rotation, translation, optical transfer function convolution, and system calibration functions during scene projection.

Many diverse software systems are in use on the Keck I telescope. This is mostly because software standards were low-level (e.g., choice of programming language, computer or operating system) and did not specify use of a particular software environment. Selection of directory structures, messaging systems, tasking environments and support packages was largely left up to individual development groups, although there were some successful instances of group collaborations. For the Keck ii telescope, a common set of standards and tools has been agreed on, and the provision and maintenance of these tools is regarded as a group effort. These standards and tools are known as the Keck ii software Infrastructure and include EPICS (Experimental Physics and Industrial control System), the successful Keck I concept of making all system control available via keyword/value pairs, the Tcl command language, standard logging and error reporting, and common programing standards. This paper discusses some of the successes and failures of the Keck I approach and describes how the Keck ii system is evolving from the Keck I system. Some examples of the use of EPICS for telescope control are given, and EPICS as a vehicle for future collaboration is considered.

In this paper we extend previous work done at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center on the development of a fuzzy logic controller to generate individual joint rate commands to the robotic arm in response to human input, via remote manipulation of translational and rotational hand controllers. In this phase of the study we have utilized the Goddard Space FLight Center Remote Manipulator hardware/software system in which the fuzzy logic controller has currently been implemented, and have used this system for tuning the controller for near optimal response. Performance results from the system studies are presented.
