Compound refractive lenses (CRL)(1) are widely used to manipulate synchrotron radiation beams. Accurate modelling of x-ray beam propagation through individual lenses and through "transfocators" composed of a large number of CRLs is of high importance, since it allows for comprehensive optimization of x-ray beamline designs for particular user experiments. In this work we used the newly developed Mcxtrace ray-tracing package(2) and the SRW wave-optics code(3) to simulate the beam propagation of x-ray undulator radiation through such a "transfocator" as implemented at ID-11 at ESRF4. By applying two complementary simulation methods, we were able to obtain comparable results (e. g. the beam's focused properties) and also to provide a complete description of x-ray beam propagation through the CRLs and other optical components. However, some discrepancies between the results acquired by both methods (e. g. broader monochromatization degree obtained with the Mcxtrace code) brought a meaningful insight into further development strategies for the Mcxtrace package(5)

The ultrahigh energy resolution IxS spectrometer being developed at the National Synchrotron Light Source II (NSLS-II) employs an innovative optical design. Its analyzer system utilizes an L-shaped laterally graded multilayer mirror in tandem with a multi-crystal arrangement. The multi-crystal arrangement explores the angular dispersion effect in extremely asymmetric Bragg reflections to achieve sub-meV energy resolution at an energy about 9.1 keV. Its angular acceptance (similar to 0.1 mrad) is about two orders of magnitude lower than the spherically-bent backscattering analyzers conventionally used in other IxS spectrometers. The L-shaped laterally graded multiplayer mirror was designed to increase the angular acceptance of this new multi-crystal optics to a comparable level. It performs angular collimation of the incoming beam from about 15 mrad down to 0.1 mrad in both vertical and horizontal directions. Here we present simulations of the mirror performance and study the positioning and stability requirements in conjunction with the multi-crystal energy analyzer.

The evolution of the hardware platforms, the modernization of the software tools, the access to the codes of a large number of young people and the popularization of the open source software for scientific applications drove us to design OASYS (ORange SYnchrotron Suite), a completely new graphical environment for modelling x-ray experiments. The implemented software architecture allows to obtain not only an intuitive and very-easy-to-use graphical interface, but also provides high flexibility and rapidity for interactive simulations, making configuration changes to quickly compare multiple beamline configurations. Its purpose is to integrate in a synergetic way the most powerful calculation engines available. OASYS integrates different simulation strategies via the implementation of adequate simulation tools for xray optics (e.g. ray tracing and wave optics packages). It provides a language to make them to communicate by sending and receiving encapsulated data. Python has been chosen as main programming language, because of its universality and popularity in scientific computing. The software Orange, developed at the University of Ljubljana (SLO), is the high level workflow engine that provides the interaction with the user and communication mechanisms.

A full wave propagation of x-rays from source to sample at a storage ring beamline requires simulation of the electron beam source and optical elements in the beamline. The finite emittance source causes the appearance of partial coherence in the wave field. Consequently, the wavefront cannot be treated exactly with fully coherent wave propagation or fully incoherent ray tracing. We have used the wavefront code Synchrotron Radiation Workshop (SRW) to perform partially coherent wavefront propagation using a parallel computing cluster at the Diamond Light Source. Measured mirror profiles have been used to correct the wavefront for surface errors.

The propagation of x-ray waves through an optical system consisting of 33 aluminum x-ray refractive lenses is considered. For solving the problem, a finite-difference method is suggested and investigated. It is shown that very small steps of the difference grid are necessary for reliable computation of propagation of x-ray waves through the system of lenses. It is shown that the wave phase is a function very quickly increasing with distance from an optical axis, after the wave has propagated through the system of lenses. If the phase is a quickly increasing function, then the wave electric field is a quickly oscillating function. We suggest and recommend using the equation for a phase function instead of the equation for an electric field. The equation for a phase function is derived.

The present paper reviews the x-ray grating imaging systems at home and abroad from the aspects of technological characterizations and the newest researching focus. First, not only the imaging principles and the frameworks of the typical x-ray grating imaging system based on Talbot-Lau interferometry method, but also the algorithms of retrieving the signals of attenuation, refraction and small-angle scattering are introduced. Second, the system optimizing methods are discussed, which involves mainly the relaxing the requirement of high positioning resolution and strict circumstances for gratings and designing large field of view with high resolution. Third, two and four-dimensional grating-based x-ray imaging techniques are introduced. Moreover, the trends of x-ray grating based imaging technology are discussed, especially the multiple information fusions are tried with attenuation, refraction and scattering obtained synchronously.

The emergence of new high brilliance and high coherence facilities such as x-ray Free Electron Lasers (xFELs) and 4th generation synchrotrons open a new era in x-ray optics. Dynamical diffraction effects before disregarded are starting to play a role in the beam control of large scale facilities. In the case of xFEL facilities the temporal characteristics of the dynamical diffraction by thin perfect crystals can be used as a tool to generate femtosecond monochromatic pulses, in the case of self-seeding in the hard x-ray regime, but could even be used as method to characterize materials in this temporal range. In this contribution we present the first steps in the understanding of the spatial-displacement dependence of forward beams diffracted by thin crystals. The data collected by this technique is compared with crystal models based in dynamical diffraction theory. This type of study could open a new field to understand low strain materials in the femtosecond regime.

x-ray phase imaging utilizes a variety of techniques to render phase information as intensity contrast and these intensity images can in some cases be processed to retrieve quantitative phase. A subset of these techniques use free space propagation to generate phase contrast and phase can be recovered by inverting differential equations governing propagation. Two techniques to generate quantitative phase reconstructions from a single phase contrast image are described in detail, along with regularization techniques to reduce the influence of noise. Lastly, a recently developed technique utilizing a binary amplitude grid to enhance signal strength in propagation based techniques is described.

High-accuracy physical optics calculation methods used in the "Synchrotron Radiation Workshop" (SRW) allow for multiple applications of this code in different areas, covering development, commissioning, diagnostics and operation of x-ray instruments at light source facilities. This presentation focuses on the application of the SRW code for the simulation of experiments at these facilities. The most complete and most detailed simulation of experiments with SRW is possible in the area of elastic coherent scattering, where the interaction of radiation with samples can be described with the same transmission-type "propagators" that are used for the simulation of fully-and partially-coherent radiation propagation through x-ray optical elements of beamlines. A complete "source-to-detector" simulation of such an experiment for a lithographic sample is described here together with comparisons of the simulated coherent scattering data with actual measurements results, obtained at the Coherent Hard x-ray (CHx) beamline of the National Synchrotron Light Source II (NSLS-II). Particular attention is paid to the analysis of visibility of speckles and intensity levels in the scattered radiation patterns at different degrees of coherence of the radiation entering the sample.

The paper presents an overview of the main functions and new application examples of the "Synchrotron Radiation Workshop" (SRW) code. SRW supports high-accuracy calculations of different types of synchrotron radiation, and simulations of propagation of fully-coherent radiation wavefronts, partially-coherent radiation from a finite-emittance electron beam of a storage ring source, and time-/frequency-dependent radiation pulses of a free-electron laser, through x-ray optical elements of a beamline. An extended library of physical-optics "propagators" for different types of reflective, refractive and diffractive x-ray optics with its typical imperfections, implemented in SRW, enable simulation of practically any x-ray beamline in a modern light source facility. The high accuracy of calculation methods used in SRW allows for multiple applications of this code, not only in the area of development of instruments and beamlines for new light source facilities, but also in areas such as electron beam diagnostics, commissioning and performance benchmarking of insertion devices and individual x-ray optical elements of beamlines. Applications of SRW in these areas, facilitating development and advanced commissioning of beamlines at the National Synchrotron Light Source II (NSLS-II), are described.
