In the event that a DVR is damaged, its contents cannot be easily exported. This renders the forensically-sound recovery of proprietary-formatted video files with their timestamps from a DVR hard disk an expensive and challenging exercise. The continual advancement of the digital network society demands higher density and higher data transfer rates for all sorts of datastorage. optical memory based on the "near-field" principle is considered one of the most promising ones because it has no apparent physical density limit such as that due to the thermal instability encountered in magnetic recording. In light of this, we have previously demonstrated the superior readout performance of an optical head slider which is mounted on a non-circular aperture, specifically a triangular aperture having a bottom side size of 330 nm irradiated by polarized light, with this scheme indicating a clear signal response corresponding to a 70-nm-long single slit pattern. In order to fully realize the superior potential of the triangular aperture's high spatial resolution and high signal output, it is essential to minimize aperture-to-medium spacing. In this paper, we introduce a protruded aperture mounted on a 1.5-mm-long miniaturized optical head slider whose aperture protrudes approximately 20 nm from an air-bearing surface level based on nano-step lithography technology. Utilizing a triangular aperture of 140 nm per side, a readout experiment was carefully performed at an aperture-to-medium spacing down to approximately 30 nm, corresponding to a circumferential velocity of 2.18 m/s. The influence of the incident light's polarization direction (in relation to the bottom side of the triangular aperture) on the readout signals was evaluated by flying the aperture above a chromium patterned medium having single-space or line-and-space patterns whose line lengths ranged from 300 to 50 nm.

Collinear holography proposed by OPTWARE Corporation is the most promising method for ultra-high density volumetric opticaldatastorage system. A servo technology is introduced to control the objective lens to be stopped relatively to the disc during the recording and the reconstructing process. Experimental and theoretical studies suggest that the proposed system and media structure are indeed very effective for materializing a small opticalstorage system with huge density. Further investigations have been underway to balance the data density and the transfer rate by incorporating newly designed optical and electronic components. Silver oxide thin-films with various silver oxides concentration and silver particles amounts are prepared via magnetron sputtering techniques with oxygen reactive gas by varying deposition parameters. The presence of silver particles in the inorganic silver oxide compound was detected by x-ray diffraction. Heat measurements of the powdered silver oxide film via thermogravimetry analyzer (TGA) show that the powdered silver oxide decomposes and releases oxygen at a temperature of about 355 degrees C. The oxygen concentration can be estimated by TGA weight loss. The optical reflectance and extinction coefficient of the silver oxide film confirm the dual function of the silver particles present in the film. The silver particles served both as the laser beam light absrober and reflectance centers for laser beam. With the presence of the silver particles in the silver oxide film, the reflective layer used in the prior art can be dispensed with. A single layer disk-silver dispersed silver oxide film, which served both as the recording layer and the reflective layer, deposited on the digital versatile disk-recordable (DVD-R) polycarbonate substrate is prepared. Since the plastic substrate is softened at a temperature of about 140 degrees C, the silver oxide recording layer decomposes and releases oxygen when the recording medium is irradiated with a laser beam so as to permit formation of recesses in the plastic substrate and so as to permit a sharp change in reflectivity at positions where the recessions are formed. The characteristics of this single layer DVD-R disk are demonstrated.
