A minimized optical lens head for dual-beam super-resolution opticalstorage system which is based on Stimulated Emission Depletion (STED)-like process with Petabyte data capacity is proposed. The whole bulky optical path is simplified to a customized metasurface with a diameter of 50m, which generates a focused Gaussian beam and a donut beam overlapped perfectly in space. The specially designed lens head offers a distinct performance of chromatic aberration-free design with adaptability to multiple dual-beam combinations.

Holographic datastorage is a new opticaltechnology which allows an important number of bits to be stored in a recording material. In this work, holographic data pages were stored in a PVA/acrylamide photopolymer layer using a peristrophic multiplexing method. This material is formed of acrylamide photopolymers, which are considered interesting materials for recording holographic memories. A liquid crystal (LCD) device was used to modify the object beam and store the data pages in the material. This LCD was used to modulate the object beam in order to reduce the zero frequency of the Fourier Transform (FT) of the object. The scheme used to reduce this frequency was hybrid ternary modulation (HTM).

In this paper we present results of work done on large image browsing. advances in compression and transmission have allowed efficient usage of storage and transmission resources;however, much work needs to be done in order to integrate such concepts in the processing and handling of data. One such problem is image browsing. Large images, in order of hundreds of Megabytes to Gigabytes, exist that not only strain storage resources of some computers but make transmission almost impossible for dialup networks or even some digital networks. By exploiting the fact that receiving nodes need to only view limited regions of the image, a data organization and handling mechanism is devised to serve the appropriate data in a timely fashion. A wavelet-based approach is pursued with desirable compression and progressive characteristics along with scalar and spatial access to pixel data.

Rapid technological advances and the increasing use of social media has caused a tremendous increase in the generation of digital data, a fact that imposes nowadays a great challenge for the field of digital datastorage due to the short-term reliability of conventional storage devices. Hard disks, fiash, tape or even opticalstorage have a durability of 5 to 20 years while running data centers also require huge amounts of energy. An alternative to hard drives is the use of DNA, which is life's information-storage material, as a means of digital datastorage. Recent works have proven that storing digital data into DNA is not only feasible but also very promising as the DNA's biological properties allow the storage of a great amount of information into an extraordinary small volume for centuries or even longer with no loss of information. In this work we present an extended end-to-end storage workflow specially designed for the efficient storage of images onto synthetic DNA. This workflow uses a new encoding algorithm which serves the needs of image compression while also being robust to the biological errors which may corrupt the encoding.

The materials, method and for storing and accessing information in 3D by means of two-photon absorption will be described. The materials used have very high two photon absorption crosssection and near unit quantum efficiency for fluorescence. The storage devices are composed of organic molecules, uniformly dispersed in polymer matrices. The binary codes zero and one correspond to two different structures of the same molecule, induced by simultaneous absorption of two photons. The writing and accessing of the information can be performed either bit by bit or in a 2D multibit plane format. Fatigue studies suggest that these materials are suitable for 3D storage devices. Automated recording and readout 3D systems have been constructed and characterized. Channel error sources have been identified, and a custom spatial bit-error-rate test has been developed.

We present issues related to the architecture of a document archiver using optical disk technology. In particular we examine the problems of data placement in the optical disk, storage hierarchies, data duplication and version control. Simulation results and analytical results are presented. These results are used to analyze the effect of various design decisions on the performance of such a system.
