The performance of the proposed system with the noise reduced ROM opticalstorage disc and the error feedback (EF)-partial response maximum likelihood (PRML), composed of the error-select type adaptive equalizer and the adaptive Viterbi decoder, is demonstrated. The reproduced signal of the 19.8 GBytes ROM disc shows a sufficient low error characteristic.

We have shown that fast growth determined materials (FGM) can be used in high density (land-groove) high data rate phase change recording. We applied these materials to the DVR-blue system and developed discs with a total capacity of 22 GB at a user data rate of 51 Mbps. Thermal management of the stacks on these discs, especially by the use of thin metal layers, is an important ingredient.

A 2D nano-aperture VCSEL array head of near-field optics was studied with the formation of small aperture on the VCSEL surface after the deposition of dielectric and metal films. Its optical properties were also characterized to apply the VCSEL array for the near-field optical memory system of higher data capacity and speed. In this study, we could produce very small aperture of around 50 nm in diameter successfully using a focused ion beam (FIB) method, and get the reasonable increasement in the laser power with the formation of nano-aperture on each VCSEL emitting surface.

optical near-field techniques have shown some promise for high-density opticaldatastorage of several tens Gb/in/sup 2/. The diffraction limit of the far-field optics can be greatly relaxed by solid immersion lens (SIL). Recent research on near-field optical recording is focusing on a commercial product: the high-density storage drive. It is attractive to minimize the size and the weight of the SIL to realize a near-field optical pickup head capable of fast tracking and of maintaining a stable gap in the optical near-field regime. A simple and reliable micromachining process is developed to make miniaturized SIL. Polymeric super-hemispherical SIL can be replicated by hot press molding using the micromachined silicon master. The design and fabrication issues of the micromachined silicon master and molding process of the SIL are reported. The magnification factor of the fabricated micro-SIL is 3.143.

Summary form only *** holographic recording of information is an attractive solution for the next generation of digital storage, holding promise for systems with high density (/spl ges/10 Gbit/cm/sup 2/), and fast transfer rate (Gbit/sec). The performance of a holographic storage system is principally determined by the recording medium characteristics. Photorefractive crystals had been the most extensively investigated volumetric media, offering good optical quality, and sensitive, but typically volatile, recording. Recently, advances in sufficiently thick photopolymerizable recording media have provided a very attractive alternative for WORM systems. This work evaluates the recording physical properties of photopolymer holographic storage.

Summary form only given. Recently, we have reported on the three-dimensional (3D) optical bit datastorage in photorefractive polymers using two-photon excitation, which allows one to develop a low-cost, erasable, and rewritable 3D opticalstorage method. The photorefractive polymer we used consists of 2,5-dimethyl-4-(p-nitrophenylazo)anisole, 2,4,7-trinitro-9-fluorenone, 9-ethylcarbazole and poly(N-vinylcarbazole).

Summary form only given. Using photon echo processes a range of all-optical signal processing operations can be performed in inhomogeneously broadened materials. For example, all-optical devices for communication, such as optical bit-rate converters and routers and opticaldatastorage devices and erasable memories with storage densities in the range of terabits/cm/sup 2/ have been proposed based on photon echo processes in rare-earth-ion-doped crystals.

The oceanographic community is seeing new and substantial advances in the development of underwater vehicles. The future is near when we will witness networked fleets that will acquire synoptic data over wide areas. The potential of multiple, concurrent AUV/UUV deployments promises the ocean research community with increased data accuracy, the elimination of spatial and temporal aliasing, and more efficient and cost-effective means of data dissemination. To complement these advances in AUV/UUV technology, we will need continued development of new and more sophisticated sensor systems, to expand our understanding of the ocean's processes. The University of South Florida's Center for Ocean technology specializes in developing sensor systems to meet the ever-increasing need of oceanographers to collect high-resolution data relating to the chemical, biological and physical processes of the ocean. This paper presents up-to-date information about three of those instruments.

We have shown that a 15 GB optical disc that has a transparent plastic substrate of 0.3 mm thickness can be reproducible with an objective lens of NA 0.65, without any tilt servo and crosstalk cancel. And we also confirmed that the injection pressing molding method may be feasible to produce a plastic substrate of 0.3 mm thickness.

A micromirror actuated by piezoelectric cantilevers is proposed as a fine-tracking device for high-density opticaldatastorage. Metal/PZT/metal thin film actuators translate an integrated micromirror along the out-of-plane vertical direction. The parallel motion of the micromirror steers linearly the optical path of the reflected laser beam. Numerical analysis shows that the actuated micromirror can satisfy the tracking speed imposed by the requirement on the access time for the high-density opticaldatastorage up to few tens Gbit/in2. In this paper, preliminary characteristics of the micromachined PZT actuated micromirror (PAM) are reported. The design and the fabrication process of the PZT actuated micromirror are described. Only a 3600 angstroms-thick PZT film deposited by sol-gel process shows both good electrical and mechanical characteristics for the actuators. The micromirror can be easily actuated up to several micrometers under low voltage operation condition.
