This paper presents a novel approach integrating recent advances in multiprotocol label switching (MPLS) traffic engineering with wavelength switch/routing technologies to achieve optical interconnect for IP-centric data Networks. A new node architecture for scalable wavelength label switching networks (WLSnet) is proposed, which supports label switching and wavelength routing. This paper shows this network, which adds more flexible routing, traffic engineering, and explicit routes via MPLS, is the best way to realize optical interconnects and to reduce management complication and network cost. An approach to dynamically interconnect routers via wavelength is shown, including a bypass routing in the node; in this manner new wavelengths may easily be introduced into the network at a reasonable cost. This approach also paves the way for the eventual incorporation of DWDM multiplexing capabilities in IP routers, and establishes a preliminary framework for the notion of an optical Internet.

We have used two-photon induced photobleaching for optical data storage. This technique was illustrated by producing a Bugs Bunny cartoon video in which various move frames were stored. A novel approach was used for fabrication of three-dimensional optical circuitry using insitu two-photon assisted polymerization in an as-formed bulk sample. The bulk media consisted of a blend of photocurable and thermally curable epoxies.

Site Access Management Systems (SAM) within the UK have evolved throughout the 90's, utilising increasingly more powerful and sophisticated hardware, more advanced communications services, and more effective software, thus providing improved user interfaces and better data/image handling characteristics. The requirement for SAMS in secure establishments came about from a desire to increase the actual and perceived security of a site or building, by capturing the data and image of everyone who crosses the threshold, printing a high speed, low cost ID pass, and storing all of the information for future processing purposes. The user demands for high speed processing, simple yet secure user interfaces, large files with images, and data communications presented many development challenges. In the early days, there were severe performance and storage restrictions due to low PC specifications, ccd camera technology, storage capacity, and network communications limitations. However, the software and design disciplines that were essential to even make it work in this environment, established a framework that has provided a sound basis for further system development and growth as technology advances at an ever increasing rate. The latest versions of SAMS operate on a Windows NT platform with SQL databases, providing secure operation and industry standard interfaces. There are now systems covering wide areas of site access, with interfaces to HR and AAC systems, and full data integration where possible. Wide area networks offer shared information for large organisations, with Intranet Visit Notification providing substantial financial and security benefits.

The upgrade of the SURF electron storage ring has provided an opportunity to make several improvements to the detector radiometry beamline (BL-9). A new control and data acquisition system has been developed and new high-order-suppression filters have been installed. Fundamental beamline characterizations have been made to evaluate the impact of the upgraded synchrotron radiation source on the calibration of NIST transfer standard photodiodes.

For ultra-high-speed single media parallel interconnects, an all optical single fiber WDM format of transmitting parallel bits rather than a fiber ribbon format where parallel bits are sent through corresponding parallel fibers in a ribbon format, can be the media of choice. Here, we shall discuss the realization of a multi-km x gbytes/sec bit-parallel WDM (BP-WDM) single fiber link. The distance-speed product of this single fiber link is more than several orders of magnitude higher than that of a fiber ribbon link. The design of a 12 bit-parallel channels WDM system operating at 1 Gbit/sec per channel rate through a single fiber will first be presented. Experimental results for a two channel system operating at that rate are given. Further improvement of distance-speed product for the BP-WDM link can be obtained with JPL's newly developed 20 Gbits/sec per channel laser diode array transmitter. Also, new computer simulation results on how a large amplitude co-propagating pulse may induce pulse compression on all the co-propagating data pulses, thereby improving the shaping of these pulses for a WDM system, will be presented and discussed. The existence of WDM solitons is also shown.

The Georgia Tech Wearable Motherboard/sup TM/ (GTWM) provides a versatile framework for incorporation of sensing, monitoring and information processing devices. It has opened up new frontiers in telemedicine, infant care, military, space exploration and athletics. We have developed a working prototype of wireless communication between the GTWM and the outside world. The overall system consists of data acquisition, data transmission, computation and data storage, and user interface. It can serve as a full wearable computer, providing functionalities for tracking the physiological conditions of the user as well as sensory information from the environment and other peripherals. The system performs well in indoor wireless environments with signal to noise ratio as low as 5 dB. This prototype opens up many research opportunities in the fields of affective computing, human-computer interaction, and mobile information processing.

The viability of acoustically-linked, long-term ocean sensing is dependent on the power efficiency of the communications system. Energy storage in the deep ocean remains costly despite advances in battery technology, and thus, maximizing data throughput at constant power is an important goal. In preparation for future deep-water applications, a test was previously conducted in 3000 m water to measure the performance of a communications system using a number of different signaling techniques. The signals included BPSK, QPSK and 8-PSK modulation with data rates up to 15000 bits per second. Several receivers were used, including directional transducers, both baffled and un-baffled, as well as a small omnidirectional array. Reliable communication at up to 15000 bps using 7.5 W at the transmitter was achieved. The baffled directional receiver offered the best performance, while the omni-directional array provided approximately 50% less throughput. Source-receiver motion was found to impact system performance and results using an improved Doppler tracking and compensation method are described. Details of the results using various modulation methods and receiver combinations are discussed and their performance extrapolated to full-ocean depth as an aid to the design of future ocean observatory links.

Up to now, the head-disk spacing is the main parameter used to link the magnetic performance with mechanical head-disk interface. However, as the mean head-disk spacing goes to 5-10 nanometer level, the relationship between mechanical interface/interaction and magnetic head-disk interface/interaction is not only writing field or reading sensitivity but other factors induced by mechanical interaction as well, such as magnetic signal decay, thermal asperity, and even data erasure.

This paper describes a full-custom mixed-signal chip which embeds distributed optical signal acquisition, digitally-programmable analog parallel processing, and distributed image memory - cache - on a common silicon substrate. This chip, designed in a 0.5 mu m CMOS standard technology contains around 1, 000, 000 transistors, 80% of which operate in analog mode;it is hence one the most complex mixed-signal chip reported to now. Chip functional features are in accordance to the CNN Universal Machine (1) paradigm: cellular, spatial-invariant array architecture;programmable local interactions among cells;randomly-selectable memory of instructions (elementary instructions are defined by specific values of the cell local interactions);random storage/retrieval of intermediate images;capability to complete algorithmic image processing tasks controlled by the user-selected stored instructions and interacting with the cache memory, etc. Thus, as illustrated in this paper, the chip is capable to complete complex spatio-temporal image processing tasks within short computation time ( similar to 200ns for linear convolutions) and using a low power budget (<1.2W for the complete chip). The internal circuitry of the chip has been designed to operate in robust manner with >7-bit equivalent accuracy in the internal analog operations, which has been confirmed by experimental measurements. Hence, to all practical purposes, processing tasks completed by the chip have the same accuracy than those completed by digital processors preceded by 7-bit digital-to-analog converters for image digitalization. Such 7-bit accuracy is enough for most image processing applications. The paper briefly describes the chip architecture and focus mostly on presenting experimental evidences of the chip functionality. This investigation presents a novel method of pattern recognition using the polynomial bidirectional heteroassociator (PBH). This network can be used for the industrial application of optical character recognition. According to detailed simulations, the PBH has a higher capacity for pattern pair storage than that of the conventional bidirectional associative memories and fuzzy memories. Meanwhile, the practical capacity of a PBH considering fault tolerance is discussed. The fault tolerance requirement leads to the discovery of the attraction radius of the basin for each stored pattern pair. The PBH takes advantage of fuzzy characteristics in evolution equations such that the signal-noise-ratio is significantly increased. We apply the result of this research to pattern recognition problems. The practical capacity of the fuzzy data recognition using the PBH considering fault tolerance in the worst case is also estimated. Simulation results are presented to verify the derived theory.
