This paper describes the work performed at BP Solar, Fairfield, California highlighting advances in the Apollo(R) CdTe technology. The paper describes the eight basic process steps involved in making the module. The state of the art CdTe reactor is also detailed with its sophisticated design and control features. Various techniques were utilized to characterize the semiconductor materials. Using AFM and X-ray diffraction, the morphology and crystallographic properties of the films were investigated. This work showed the grain structure was small, even after post deposition air anneals. optical characterization determined quantum efficiency of the device and helped optimize window layer thickness for record performances. NREL confirmed module efficiency of 10.8% is reported for a 0.55m/sup 2/ module and a maximum power of 91.5 W for a 0.94m/sup 2/ monolithic module. Indoor stress testing and outdoor performance test beds are also described. The data presented shows good indoor stability at various stress conditions.

Summary form only given. We have fabricated a 400 nm square micro-aperture VCSEL with single transverse mode operation. We carried out the near field characterization using a sharpened fiber probe. The FWHM of intensity below threshold was 250 nm, and our metal micro-aperture VCSEL may have a potential for a high resolution optical head.

Summary form only given. Two-photon excitation provides a means of activating chemical or physical processes with high spatial resolution in three dimensions and has enabled the development of 3D fluorescence imaging, 3D opticaldatastorage, and 3D lithographic microfabrication. We have developed a wide array of chromophores which hold great promise for two-photon applications. These molecules are based on a donor-/spl pi/-donor, donor-acceptor-donor, or acceptor-donor-acceptor structural motifs. The magnitude of the two-photon absorption cross section and the position of the two-photon absorption maximum can be controlled by varying the length of the conjugated bridge and by varying the strength of the donor and acceptor groups. In this way, chromophores have been developed which exhibit strong two-photon absorption in the range of 500-975 nm.

The read/write amplifier is one of the key components in hard disk drive (HDD) design. Traditionally, BiCMOS technology has been the main stream process for preamplifier design. However, with recent advances in CMOS processing, CMOS implementation is more cost-effective and more suitable for chip on suspension due to smaller die size, and is high-performance in terms of noise, gain accuracy, channel-to-channel matching, bandwidth, PSSR and write-current rise/fall time. The 8-channel read/write amplifier is fabricated in a 0.5 /spl mu/m 5 V double-poly, double-metal CMOS process. Coupled with an advanced write head, this high performance read/write amplifier supports >550 Mb/s data rate.

Transient voltage/current pulses cannot be stored into normal DC batteries. This work reviews possibility of storing these surges using supercapacitor. Laser induced plasma may be caused by firing laser pulses into the clouds charge clusters. The charge pulses flow down along the laser induced air wire (LIAW) and passes through a supercapacitor to charge it. Objective of this study is to test the possibility of storing these charges using supercapacitors. Energy storage in solid state electrochemical capacitors (supercapacitors) or ultra supercapacitors occurs through reversible oxidation-reduction (redox) reactions. Contribution of double layer is less significant, however, a major percentage of total energy stored is attributed to reversible surface redox reactions. Different types of supercapacitors have been analyzed regarding their charge and discharge performance under repetitively charging pulses. The authors' initial analysis based on existing mathematical techniques, shows that a real superconductor may charge under transient conditions at a much higher rate but subsequent considerations based on mathematical analysis and available data on supercapacitors technology, lead us to new recommendations to improve the design of supercapacitor to perform as an ultrasupercapacitor.

The authors wish to dedicate this paper to the late Mr. Patrick Sandell, the past Chairman of B11, whose stewardship of the optical disk standards activities in the past years produced much of the fruit which we will all enjoy. His leadership and contribution will be remembered for yeats to come. opticaltechnology for datastorage offers media removability with unsurpressed reliability. As the media are removable, data interchange between the media and drives from different sources is a major concern. The optical recording community realized, at the inception of this new storagetechnology development, that international standards for all optical recording disk/cartridge must be established to insure the healthy growth of this industry and for the benefit of the users. Many standards organizations took up the challenge and numerous international standards were established which are now being used world-wide. This paper provides a brief summary of the current status of the international optical disk standards.

This paper presents techniques developed at the Information technology Laboratory of the US National Institute of Standards and technology (NIST / ITL) for enabling microscopic image analysis of opticaldatastorage media such as optical disks. These non-destructive techniques allow investigators to easily locate on the media a pre-existing series of media defects. These techniques can be applied to any type of optical disks including CDs and DVDs. The paper describes the experimental setup and the techniques utilized to achieve localization and registration of media defects. These techniques include data acquisition, computer control, auto focus, image processing, and remote control and observation. An extension of this setup utilizing available graphical programming environments can allow investigators at different locations to share and discuss the information on media defects by use of the Internet.
