For next generation high density optical storage, extensive studies on persistent spectral hole burning (PSHB) have been performed, because they have a large potential for a high density frequency-domain optical data storage. PSHB has been observed at room temperature in Sm-doped crystals and glasses. Among them, glasses are considered to be more favorable than single crystals, due to their wide inhomogeneous line width and easy process for mass production. In the study, we developed a new glass mixture which shows room temperature PSHB with a inhomogeneous line width broadened up to 70 cm/sup -1/. The PSHB was characterized by investigating the time decay pattern of fluorescence and the excitation spectra.

Summary form only given. Holographic volume memories have provoked a great deal of controversy. Angle and wavelength-multiplexed recordings have excellent potential for a large storage capacity. However, large cumbersome light sources prevent the research of holographic data storage systems. Lately, we have developed diode-pumped single-frequency and tunable Yb:YAG microchip laser. In this work, we have demonstrated multiplex recording by using an intracavity frequency doubled Yb:YAG green laser.

For the last few years, shot boundary detection has been recognized as an important research issue on video retrieval. Also as a preliminary step for the task, it is essential to extract salient features from videos. Recently, it has become common to perform the two tasks in compressed domain to alleviate their computational costs. In this paper, we propose novel shot boundary detection technique, which uses two feature images, or DC and edge images, extracted directly from MPEG compressed video. While a DC image can be easily obtained, edge image extraction usually requires considerable computational burden. For fast edge image extraction, we suggest to utilize only a few AC coefficients of each DCT block in motion compensated P-frames and B-frames as well as I-frames. This drastically reduces the computational burden compared to edge extraction in the spatial domain. In order to further reduce the computational burden, another edge image extraction technique is also suggested on the basis of AC prediction using DC images. By using the edge energy diagram obtained from edge images and histograms from DC images, shot boundaries such as abrupt transitions, fades, and dissolves are detected automatically. Simulation results show that the proposed techniques are fast and effective.

Summary form only given, as follows. The video systems on MBARI's Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs), Ventana and Tiburon, are the single most important data source. Real-time images are uplinked for scientific observation, used as data for post mission processing, and provide visual information for the pilots operating the vehicles. advances in digital electronics and data compression algorithms combined with the United States Governments desire to remain competitive in the international television market has resulted in the approval in 1996 of a new television format, the Digital Television (DTV) standard, that provides a five times increase in video image resolution. The MBARI High Definition Television (HDTV) project is a development effort that is implementing this emerging technology on their ROVs. In order to use DTV 1920 X 1080 standard HDTV equipment on an ROV several technical problems had to be addressed. The major design challenges were uplinking the very high data rate video signal, maintaining the extremely high resolution imaging though the camera housing optical dome correction optics, and repackaging a commercially available camera for 4000 meter ocean depths. The development of the optical uplink for the 1.485 Gb/sec HDTV serial data was constrained by the requirement of having all camera related functions use a maximum of one optical fiber, which provides a direct link from the camera housing itself to the ship based ROV control room. The original camera image quality is preserved to the digital HDTV recorder by conforming to the SMPTE 292M digital video standard for the entire transport and recording system and remaining in the optical domain as much as possible. This is accomplished by placing the optical transceivers within the remote camera housing.

Watermarking is a technique embedding hidden multimedia information imperceptibly, such as images and sounds. Generally the original image is transformed and coded watermark data is embedded in frequency domain watermarking models. In this paper, we propose a new data embedding method using the Fresnel transform. A watermark image is Fresnel-transformed and the intensity of the transformed pattern is embedded into the original image. Our watermarking model has the flexibility in data hiding. It is possible to embed the watermark in many different observable planes with various distance parameters of the Fresnel transform and all kinds of image models such as the shape, letter or photo can be used as the watermark data.

Demands for large-capacity high-density transmission in parallel optical interconnection networks, such as computer networks, data-link networks, and switching systems, are growing rapidly. optical transmission technologies for parallel optical-data-link applications have therefore attracted a great deal of attention. The factors that affect optical technologies differ considerably from those affecting optical-fiber transmission systems. The key requirements are small-skew operation, low power consumption, integration technology, high reliability, and low cost. optical device technologies may have to be developed specifically for this area of application to satisfy such requirements. Semiconductor laser arrays, used as light sources in parallel optical interconnection, are a key component in this field. In this paper, the key issues concerning our 1.3-μm InGaAsP/InP n-type modulation-doped strained-MQW monolithic laser arrays on a p-InP substrate used in high-density parallel optical interconnection are reviewed to aim at meeting these needs. The most recently reported results and future prospects for laser performance and technologies are examined with an emphasis on careful optimization of a strained-MQW active layer, the design of the laser cavity, the modulation-doped effect, narrow beam divergence, and uniform characteristics.

In today's disc drives, read and write functions are handled by two separate transducers optimized based on their functionality. data are read by a magneto-resistive (MR) sensor whose resistance is magnetic flux sensitive. Resistance of the sensor also changes when an asperity adds frictional heat to the sensor as it rubs against it.

We describe the current effort to develop a standardized data set, or suite of digital video sequences, that can be used for test and evaluation of digital video motion detectors (VMDs) for exterior applications. We have drawn from an extensive video database of typical application scenarios to assemble a comprehensive data set. These data, some existing for many years on analog videotape, have been converted to a reproducible digital format and edited to generate test sequences several minutes long for many scenarios. Sequences include non-alarm video, intrusions and nuisance alarm sources, taken with a variety of imaging sensors including monochrome CCD cameras and infrared (thermal) imaging cameras, under a variety of daytime and night-time conditions. We present an analysis of the variables and estimates the complexity of a thorough data set. Some of this video data test has been digitized for CD-ROM storage and playback. We are considering developing a DVD disk for possible use in screening and testing VMDs prior to government testing and deployment.

In recent years, tunable diode laser based sensors have found widespread applications to the sensitive and selective detection of environmentally important atmospheric trace gases in real time. Numerous analytical tools based on different optical and non-optical techniques have been developed in the past. However, an ideal gas sensor technology that meets such diverse requirements as high sensitivity and selectivity, wavelength tunability of multi-component detection, fully computerized, room temperature operation (i.e. no liquid nitrogen cooling), large dynamic range, compactness, high reliability (insensitive to vibrations and large variations in ambient temperature), relative ease of use and cost-effectiveness in terms of initial and maintenance costs, is a challenging research and development task. Recent significant technological advances of semiconductor diode lasers and tunable all solid state lasers, novel bulk and waveguide infrared nonlinear materials for parametric optical frequency conversion, optical fiber amplifiers and couplers, thermoelectric coded low noise infrared detectors, and advanced data acquisition and signal processing techniques have had a considerable impact on development of state of the art of diode laser based trace gas sensors.
