The advent of a desktop and notebook of the personal computer necessities the disk drive to he manufactured more smaller and thinner. In order to employ the compact disk(CD] driver or digital video display(DVD) driver for the notebook size personal computer datastorage devices, It 1s required to shorten the disk driver's height. Figure l(a) shows a configuration proposed to reduce the height of the conventional disk drive as shown in Fig. l(b). The former is called as an asymmetric actuator while the latter is called as a symmetric actuator for convenience. The distance between the reflective mirror and objective minor is reduced in the asymmetric actuator.

Passive millimeter-wave imager (PMI) technology provides a powerful sensor capability for military and commercial imaging applications in adverse weather. Recent advances in high-frequency antennas, MMW electronics, and high-speed signal processing, have brought real-time, high-contrast, high-resolution, wide-field of view PMI into the realm of technological feasibility. However, the prohibitive cost and volume of previous PMI architectures have proved impractical for all but a few scientific implementations. This situation has precluded PMI usage in several applications with demonstrable benefits, such as aircraft landing, and radio-silent airborne surveillance/battle damage assessment. A new PMI architecture has been demonstrated with a high frame rate (30 Hz) with order of magnitude reductions in cost and volume relative to previous designs. Highlights of this new PMI architecture will be presented along with examples of video-rate imaging data representing its current capability for airborne imaging.

DVD-RAM requires a large storage capacity to write and read huge amounts of data such as MPEG2 and AV as well as computer data for full-scale multi-media applications. Its format is focused on unifying AV and computer files, and achieving read compatibility with DVD-ROM drive. DVD-RAM has been realized by using phase change media, 0.6 mm substrate, 650 nm laser and NA 0.6 lens. The track has a single-spiral wobbled land and groove format. Each sector in land and groove tracks can be accessed in a seamless manner by combining physical headers and the wobble signal. 8-16 modulated signal is overwritten on land and groove tracks with mark edge recording method, The sector position shifting of 8 bytes and two guard fields located at the top and end of the data field are introduced to prevent the signal deterioration caused by repeating overwrites. DVD-RAM disc has wide tolerances of laser power and disc tilt, and overwrite durability of over 10(5) cycles. It is also concluded that DVD-RAM is high reliable and compatible for reading by DVD-ROM drives.

This paper introduces the design and implementation of a Multimedia data Repository served as a multimedia information system, which provides users a Web accessible, platform independent interface to query, browse, and retrieve multimedia data such as images, graphics, audio, video from a large multimedia data repository. By integrating the multimedia DBMS, in which the textual information and samples of the multimedia data is organized and stored, and Web server together into the Microsoft ActiveX Server Framework, users can access the DBMS and query the information by simply using a Web browser at the client-side. The original multimedia data can then be located and transmitted through the Internet from the tertiary storage device, a 400 CDROM optical jukebox at the server-side, to the client-side for further use.

A new opticaldatastoragetechnology based on the surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) effect has been developed for high-density optical memory and three-dimensional datastorage. With the surface-enhanced Raman opticaldatastorage (SERODS) technology, the molecular interactions between the optical layer molecules and the nanostructured metal substrate are modified by the writing laser, changing their SERS properties to encode information as bits. Since the SERS properties are extremely sensitive to molecular nano-environments, very small "spectrochemical holes" approaching the diffraction limit can be produced for the writing process. The SERODS device uses a reading laser to induce the SERS emission of molecules on the disk and a photometric detector tuned to the frequency of the Raman spectrum to retrieve the stored information. The results illustrate that SERODS is capable of three-dimensional datastorage and has the potential to achieve higher storage density than currently available opticaldatastorage systems.

In this paper we present results of work done on large image browsing. advances in compression and transmission have allowed efficient usage of storage and transmission resources;however, much work needs to be done in order to integrate such concepts in the processing and handling of data. One such problem is image browsing. Large images, in order of hundreds of Megabytes to Gigabytes, exist that not only strain storage resources of some computers but make transmission almost impossible for dialup networks or even some digital networks. By exploiting the fact that receiving nodes need to only view limited regions of the image, a data organization and handling mechanism is devised to serve the appropriate data in a timely fashion. A wavelet-based approach is pursued with desirable compression and progressive characteristics along with scalar and spatial access to pixel data.

The materials, method and for storing and accessing information in 3D by means of two-photon absorption will be described. The materials used have very high two photon absorption crosssection and near unit quantum efficiency for fluorescence. The storage devices are composed of organic molecules, uniformly dispersed in polymer matrices. The binary codes zero and one correspond to two different structures of the same molecule, induced by simultaneous absorption of two photons. The writing and accessing of the information can be performed either bit by bit or in a 2D multibit plane format. Fatigue studies suggest that these materials are suitable for 3D storage devices. Automated recording and readout 3D systems have been constructed and characterized. Channel error sources have been identified, and a custom spatial bit-error-rate test has been developed.
