Video conferencing systems (VCS) have become practical in commercial and research institutions because the advances of technologies in networking and multimedia applications. A video conferencing session involves multiple parties, possibly geographically interspersed, which exchange real-time video data. However, anomalies such as site failure and network partitioning affect the effectiveness and utilization of the communication capabilities. Video conferencing systems lack the ability of dynamically adapting themselves to the variations in the system resources such as network bandwidths, CPU utilization. memory and disk storage. In VCS, changes in parameters such as frame sizes, codec schemes, color depths, and frame resolutions can be agreed upon by users interactively based on their requirements for Quality of Service. They cannot be made automatically based on the distributed system measurements of currently available resources. We need to limit the users' burden in keeping the system running in the most suitable mode to current environment and make it possible to provide the best possible service based on the status of the system. Incorporating adaptability into a video conferencing systems minimizes the effects of the variations in system environments on the quality of video conference sessions. In this paper we present the following. First we briefly discuss the concept of adaptability and the basic idea for achieving adaptability in a video conferencing system. Nest we identify and describe some of the common anomalies encountered in a distributed system. We further characterize the Quality of Service parameters in terms of timeliness, accuracy, and precision. These parameters are also identified in different layers of the software. We give an overview of the NV video conferencing system which serves as the testbed of our experiments. Then we describe the extension and modification to NV and discuss some reconfiguration issues. The prospects of creating digital three dimensional (3D) optical-memory systems based on two-photon amplitude data writing with the use of femtosecond light pulses and fluorescent data reading are analyzed. A new variant of rewritable bit-by-bit single-beam two-photon writing and page-by-page fluorescent reading 3D optical data storage has been developed. The tabletop prototype for implementation of such a principle has been created. The polymeric multilayer matrices containing thin informative naphthacenepyridone (NP) doped layers separated by nonphotoactive layers are used as storage media.

Magnetic tape recording for data storage is reviewed with respect to the rapidly advancing areal density of recorded data on tape. The key to these advances lies primarily in the ability of heads and media to support this growth, coupled with a move to active track following servo control and advanced recording channels. Multi-element magnetic head devices in the form of arrays of thin film record (write) heads using high moment soft magnetic materials and multilayer magnetoresistive (MR) readback devices are emphasized.

Tools for selective proactive as well as reactive information retrieval, information extraction, information organization and assimilation, knowledge discovery using heterogeneous, distributed knowledge and data sources constitute some of the key enabling technologies for managing the data overload and translating recent advances in automated data acquisition, digital storage, computers and communications into advances in decision support, scientific discovery and related applications. Such distributed knowledge networks (DKN) have to be able to effectively utilize multiple autonomous, often independently owned and operated information systems. Given the complexity of the such systems and the need for autonomy of the components, multi agent systems, because of their modularity, offer an attractive framework for the design of DKN. In such multi agent systems, satisfactory completion of the tasks at hand depend critically on effective communication and coordination among the agents. The paper describes an approach to coordination and control of DKN through inter agent negotiation using the contract net protocol (CNP). The feasibility of the proposed design is demonstrated on tasks involving information retrieval and knowledge discovery using distributed data and knowledge sources.

Tools for accessing, transforming, organizing and assimilating data and knowledge from multiple heterogeneous, distributed data and knowledge sources in a form that is suitable for further analysis constitute some of the key enabling technologies for translating recent advances in automated data acquisition, digital storage, computers and communications into fundamental advances in organizational decision support, data analysis, and related applications. The design, implementation, and evaluation of a data warehouse using object-oriented views and mediator agents for bridging the mismatch between data sources and clients has been a major focus of research as part of the Distributed Knowledge Networks Project at the Iowa State University Artificial Intelligence Research Laboratory over the past two years. This paper describes the design, implementation, and population of a data warehouse component of distributed knowledge networks.

Summary form only given. Polymer-based holographic recording materials are promising media for data storage applications. Among these, poly(methylmethacrylate) (PMMA)-based materials have a long history. We present new results with one such material, consisting of PMMA with phenanthrenequinone (PQ) molecules. Specifically, the suitability of this material for holographic data storage will be discussed, as well as characterization of a novel optically induced birefringence.

As ultrafast laser technology advances, it is of importance to evaluate the potential of sub-100-fs laser pulses for laser surgery. We have extended the investigation of laser-induced optical breakdown on hard and soft tissues down to laser pulse widths of 20 fs. Powerful 20-fs to 100-ps pulses from a single Ti:sapphire oscillator/amplifier laser source at 800 nm were focused in vitro onto the surface of fresh human corneas and human enamel to a spot of 60-70 micron in diameter. The threshold for ablation was determined by increasing the pulse energy while monitoring scattered probe light at ejected ablation particles. Our experiments show a slower decrease of the threshold fluence in dependence of the pulse width in the femtosecond regime than in the picosecond regime. Unlike previously suggested, no saturation behavior could be observed at the shortest available pulse widths. For the shortest pulses with 20 fs width, we measured a threshold of 0.38 J/cm(2) and 0.42 J/cm(2) for cornea and enamel, respectively. For the longest pulses at 100 ps, the threshold fluence was 4.3 J/cm(2) and 2.06 J/cm(2), respectively. Comparison to theoretical models and to previous data determines the contribution of multi-photon and avalanche processes. Our results suggest an optimum laser pulse width of several hundred femtoseconds for most applications in ultrashort pulse laser surgery.

optical volume holographic memories provide the potential for high storage capacity, parallel readout of data pages with short access times and high data transfer rates. Multiple image storage in a single region of a photorefractive crystal can be achieved using different addressing techniques as angular, wavelength, or phase-coded multiplexing. In combination with spatial multiplexing, volume holographic memories may achieve the storage of more than 1 Terabyte of information. Among these techniques, orthogonal phase-coded multiplexing [1] offers several advantages over angular and wavelength multiplexing, having the same storage capacity. A holographic data storage system based on phase-coded multiplexing operates with a fixed wavelength and a fixed geometry, avoiding mechanically moving parts. At the same time it provides short readout times and high energy efficiency. The signal-to-noise ratio of phase-coded multiplexing for a given number of holograms is more than two orders of magnitude higher than for angular and wavelength multiplexing [2]. Moreover, it allows to perform arithmetic operations as addition and subtraction of two or more data pages directly during readout of the memory [3]. Image processing operations like comparison of two stored images or image inversion and the logical operations OR, XOR and NOT with digital data pages can be realized in that way. Therefore, using phase-coded optical memories, high capacity data storage and high speed data processing becomes possible simultaneously.
