Fiber continues to play an increasing role in connecting both telecommunications and computer networks. Once the fiber reaches an electronic box, however, it enters into the realm of package interconnections. The norm here is a backplane or motherboard with several daughtercards connected at right angles. To keep step with increasing signal and data rates, manufacturers are placing active optical devices, such as transceivers, on the daughtercard. These devices then require an optical path to the backplane, between daughtercards, or to the cabinet. But while electrical interconnection of backplanes is a relatively well-developed art, the optical counterparts of these connectors are embryonic by comparison.

In parallel with rapid advances in computer technology, biomedical functional imaging is impacting to an ever increasing extent on healthcare. Functional imaging allows us to see dynamic processes quantitatively in the living human body. However, as we need to deal with 4 dimensional time varying images, space requirements and computational complexity are extremely high. This makes information management and communication difficult. Using the minimum amount of data to represent the required information, developing fast algorithms to process the data, organizing the data in such a way to facilitate information management, and extracting the maximum amount of useful information from the recorded data, have become important research tasks in biomedical information technology. For the last 10 years, the Biomedical and Multimedia Information technology (EMIT) Group has conducted systematic studies on these topics. Some of the results relating to functional imaging data acquisition, compression, storage, management, processing, modeling and simulation, are reported.

Summary form only given. Molecules exhibiting strong two-photon absorption hold great potential for a wide range of applications, including 3D optical data storage. In particular, two-photon initiated polymerization holds tremendous promise for ultra high-density optical memory. One can selectively polymerize very small volumes of polymer near the focus of a laser beam, thus creating a change in refractive index and permitting high data storage densities. We have observed large two-photon absorptivities in bis-donor diphenylpolyene derivatives that appear to be correlated to simultaneous charge transfer from the end groups to the /spl Pi/-conjugated bridge in the molecule.

An optical DRAM, which can store information in its optical format for a long term, is demonstrated with a refreshable WDM loop memory. optical data can be written and read at very high speed. A dynamically refreshable optical loop memory is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. With such technique, optical packet in the fiber loop can be stored as long as the time the system requires. It will be beneficial to the high capacity all optical network and high throughput data storage and retrieval applications.

Summary form only given. We describe the method that completely solves the problem mentioned above in bit-oriented three dimensional photorefractive memory. We use a near-infrared pulse laser to record bit data with a two-photon absorption process. As far as we know, this is the first report on two photon photorefraction in ferroelectric crystals. Two-photon recording in seven different layers of undoped LiNbO/sub 3/ is used.

Summary form only given. optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a new and powerful technology that can overcome many of the limitations of excisional biopsy. OCT is a recently developed optical imaging technique for performing high-resolution cross-sectional imaging tomography of microstructures in biological systems. OCT performs imaging by using low-coherence interferometry to measure the optical backscattering of tissue as a function of echo delay and transverse position. The resulting two-dimensional data can be displayed as a gray scale or false color image. OCT functions as a type of optical biopsy to provide cross-sectional images of tissue structure on the micron scale. OCT is a powerful imaging technology because it can provide images of tissue in situ and in real time, without the need for tissue excision and processing. This presentation will review recent advances in OCT technology and possible future clinical applications such as arterial imaging, the detection of early neoplastic changes, and guiding surgical intervention.

Although there was some keen scientific interest in InP in the 70's, to a large extent IPRM signaled the "coming of age" of InP. IPRM was born because of a pent-up need to share the abundance of stimulating science and puzzling physics inherent in an emergent and exciting materials system. InP-based technology had potential for both new commercial markets and stringent military requirements. Scientific curiosity not withstanding, a significant, initial driving force for this new compound semiconductor system was the promise of very high-speed, broad-band communications using glass fibers that required compound semiconductor lasers. For the commercial market this meant orders of magnitude higher information throughput for less cost while for the military, secure, lightweight, broadband, EMI-free data links was the 'carrot'. Rapid advances in glass purification and extrusion techniques yielded impurity-free optical fibers with attenuation and dispersion minima that moved the optimum data transmission window from the GaAs-based 0.85 nm to 1300 nm and 1550 nm, the sole regime of InP and its alloys. Long-haul optical systems were clearly on the horizon and telecommunications companies worldwide began to seriously consider adopting InP-based technology as a standard. Although opto-electronics applications was the initial driver, the evidence for superior electronic devices was quickly established. IPRM's role in this complex technology saga was to provide a focal point for technologists. It provided an open, truly international, workshop-like forum that fostered technology exchange while catalyzing the growth of the infrastructure so crucial to any fledgling venture. The fact that we are here in 1998 is ample evidence that IPRM has been an important factor in the development of InP and related materials. A small hard disk drive for portable or hand-held applications is described, which is the result of the confluence of several technological trends. First, the individual technologies which underlie magnetic areal storage density are being improved at a rate which allows a 60% per year increase in data storage in a given area. As this rate continues, it becomes much more favorable to decrease the size of a magnetic disk drive. Secondly, there is currently major growth in the range and complexity of portable information/communication devices. The function (and ubiquity) of these devices is expanding rapidly through advances in miniaturization, power reduction and expanding communications infrastructure. Thirdly, general storage needs are also expanding, and are being driven particularly by the need to capture, transmit and store images. A prototype disk drive, called a Micro Drive, has been developed for this general market. Details of the design and components of the disk drive, which is compatible with the new Compact Flash CF Type II standard, are given. The device applications and functional performance issues are also addressed.

Magnetic hard disk drives have become the dominant storage technology for information processing and have been applied in such diverse applications as servers for large enterprise computers to desktop and mobile personal computers. This product has been the recipient of significant technology innovations as magnetoresistive sensors, advanced thin film disks and high performance PRML data channels. The result has been areal density increases at 60% per year and commensurate price per megabyte reductions. The industry average drive capacity is 4 gigabytes for the year 1998. To maintain this rapid progress throughout the next decade, giant magnetoresistive sensors and supersmooth thin film disks are being employed. The effects of superparamagnetism are addressed by innovations considered evolutionary in this technology progress.

Summary form only given. Using persistent spectral hole burning, rare-earth ions doped in crystalline or glassy matrices may prove useful in optical data storage. In the case of Sm/sup 2+/, persistent spectral hole burning is due to photoionization: the Sm/sup 2+/ is oxidized to form Sm/sup 3+/, and the ejected electron is trapped in the matrix. For applications, it is important to understand the trapping mechanism, to identify the nature of the traps, and to see whether they are stable at room temperature.
