Considerable efforts have been conducted for the improvement of datastoragetechnology and the corresponding semiconductor laser technology to meet the increasing need to store and retrieve large amount of data with short access time and high data rate at low cost per megabyte. Blue-emitting lasers fabricated from both GaN and ZnSe materials have shown promising performance for potential applications of next-generation high-density optical disks. Advanced diode laser structures that are able to realize highly stable single-spatial-mode operation with little phase fluctuations at the wave-front of the output Gaussian beam would expedite the optics design of the writing/reading head and improve the data transfer fidelity of the system.

A fast disk array is designed for the large continuous image storage. It includes a high speed data architecture and the technology of data striping and organization on the disk array. The high speed data path which is constructed by two dual port RAM and some control circuit is configured to transfer data between a host system and a plurality of disk drives. The bandwidth can be more than 100 MB/s if the data path based on PCI (Peripheral Component Interconnect). The organization of data stored on the disk array is similar to RAID 4. data are striped on a plurality of disk, and each striping unit is equal to a track. I/O instructions are performed in parallel on the disk drives. An independent disk is used to store the parity information in the fast disk array architecture. By placing the parity generation circuit directly on the SCSI (or SCSI 2) bus, the parity information can be generated on the fly. It will affect little on the data writing in parallel on the other disks. The fast disk array architecture designed in the paper can meet the demands of the image storage.

Recently, technological advances have resulted in the wide availability of commercial prod ucts offering near-line, robot-based, tertiary storage libraries. Thus, such libraries have become a crucial component of modern large-scale storage servers, given the very large stor age requirements of modern applications. Al though the subject of optimal data placement (ODP) strategies has received considerable attention for other storage devices (such as magnetic and optical disks and disk arrays), the issue of optimal data placement in tertiary libraries has been neglected. The latter is sue is more critical since tertiary storage re mains three orders of magnitude slower than secondary storage. In this paper, we address this issue by deriving such optimal placement algorithms. First, we study the ODP problem in disk libraries (jukeboxes) and subsequently, in tape libraries. In our studies, we consider different scheduling algorithms, different con figurations of disk libraries and different tape library technologies (reflecting different exist ing commercial products) and show how these impact on the ODP strategy.

While they are many, one of the inhibitors to the wide spread diffusion of PACS systems has been robust, cost effective digital archive storage solutions. Moreover, an automated Nearline(R) solution is key to a central, sharable data repository, enabling many applications such as PACS, telemedicine & teleradiology, and information warehousing and data mining for research such as patient outcome analysis. Selecting the right solution depends on a number of factors: capacity requirements, write and retrieval performance requirements, scaleability in capacity and performance, configuration architecture and flexibility, subsystem availability and reliability, security requirements, system cost, achievable benefits and cost savings, investment protection, strategic fit and more. This paper addresses many of these issues. It compares and positions optical disk and magnetic tape technologies, which are the predominant archive mediums today. Price and performance comparisons will be made at different archive capacities, plus the effect of file size on storage system throughput will be analyzed. The concept of automated migration of images from high performance, high cost storage devices to high capacity: low cost storage devices will be introduced as a viable way to minimize overall storage costs for an archive. The concept of access density (retrievals per hour per terabyte of data archived) will also be introduced and applied to the selection of the most cost effective archive solution.

Kayser-Threde has been invested many years in developing technology used in crash testing, data acquisition and test data archiving. Since 1976 the department Measurement Systems has been supplying European car manufacturers and test houses with ruggedized on-board data acquisition units for use in safety tests according to SAE J 211. The integration of on-board high-speed digital cameras has completed the data acquisition unit. Stationary high-speed cameras for external observation are also included in the controlling and acquistion system of the crash test site. The occupation of Kayser-Threde's department High Speed data Systems is the design and integration of computerized data flow systems under real-time conditions. The special circumstances of crash lest applications are taken into account for data acquisition, mass storage and data distribution. The two fundamental components of the video data archiving systems are, firstly, the recording of digital high-speed images as well as digital test data and secondly, an organized filing in mass archiving systems with the capability of near online access. In combination with sophisticated and reliable hardware components Kayser-Threde is able to deliver high performance digital data archives with storage capacities of up to 2600 TeraBytes.

In the European project SMASH [http://***/pda/smash] mass-market storage systems for domestic use are under study. Besides the storagetechnology that is developed in this project, the related objective of user-friendly browsing/query of video data is studied as well. Key issues in developing a user-friendly system are (1) minimizing the user-intervention in preparatory steps (extraction and storage of representative information needed for browsing/query), (2) providing an acceptable representation of the stored video content in view of a higher automation level, (3) the possibility for performing these steps directly on the incoming stream at storage time, and (4) parameter-robustness of algorithms used for these steps. This paper proposes and validates novel approaches for automation of mentioned preparatory phases. A detection method for abrupt shot changes is proposed, using locally computed threshold based on a statistical model for frame-to-frame differences. For the extraction of representative frames (key frames) an approach is presented which distributes a given number of key frames over the sequence depending on content changes in a temporal segment of the sequence. A multimedia database is introduced, able to automatically store all bibliographic information about a recorded video as well as a visual representation of the content without any manual intervention from the user.

Ultrafast imaging is an important need for the development, control, and evaluation of modern air-deliverable weapons systems. Recent advances in optical imaging such as speckle interferometry can potentially improve DoD capability to deliver munitions and armaments to targets at long ranges, and under adverse seeing conditions. Moderate density arrays of at least 100x100 pixels and frame rates of at least 1MHz are required Ultrafast imaging is also required for flow field optical image analysis for hypersonic propulsion systems. Silicon Mountain Design (SMD) has built such an imager so that high quality images can be obtained for relatively low cost. The SMD-64k1M camera is capable of imaging 1,000,000 frames pet second using a 256 x 256 array with the ability to store 16 frames with true 12 bits of dynamic range. This camera allows researchers to capture multiple high speed events using solid state technology housed in a 53 cubic inch package. A brief technical overview of the imager and results are presented in this paper.

By their very nature, hyperspectral imagers collect much more data per pixel than more traditional imaging systems. With bandwidth limitations on the communications channels and storage space, intelligent system design, band selection, and/or data compression will be very important. In two recent Government-funded studies (completed in Dec. 1996), Kodak developed two preliminary compression options for hyperspectral imaging. As part of these studies, the band-to-band data correlation structures for both AVIRIS and HYDICE hyperspectral imaging systems were evaluated. Some surprising results were noted that have important implications to system designers.
