We are exploring the use of highly distributed computing and storage architectures to provide all aspects of collecting, storing, analyzing, and accessing large data-objects. These data-objects can be anywhere from tens of MBytes to tens of GBytes in size. Examples are: single large images from electron microscopes, video images such as cardio-angiography, sets of related images such as MRI data and images and numerical data such as the output from a particle accelerator experiment. The sources of such data objects are often remote from the users of the data and from available large-scale storage and computation systems. Our Large data-object Management system provides network interface between the object sources, the data management system and the user of the data As the data is being stored, a cataloguing system automatically creates and stores condensed versions of the data, textual metadata and pointers to the original data. The catalogue system provides a Web based graphical interface to the data The user is able the view the low-resolution data with a standard internet connection and Web browser, or if high-resolution is required can use a high-speed connection and special application programs to view the high-resolution original data.

The exploitation of remote sensing data across multiple applications is greatly facilitated by a platform for delivering the information that can be readily tailored for the requirements of specific problems, while providing a standard infrastructure for storage, metadata management, dissemination, and integration with desktop tools and other multimedia data relevant to a problem. We have developed such a platform for data generated by remote sensing instruments, including the TRW Imaging Spectrometer (TRWIS) family. Based on TRW's lnfoWeb(TM) digital multimedia archive architecture, it provides an object-relational, Intranet environment for finding and manipulating hyperspectral data and derived products. In this paper, we discuss the platform architecture and strategies for data management and integration We present lessons learned in applying this technology that are illustrative for the development of remote sensing delivery systems.

Partitioning video sequences into individual shots is one of the fundamental processes in video content parsing and content-based video retrieval. Up to now, a variety of algorithms and systems have been developed to perform this task. However, most of these algorithms exhibit their weakness when applied to detect gradual transitions such as dissolves, wipe, fade-in and fade-out In this paper, we presented an integrated scheme to the detection of abrupt camera breaks and gradual scene changes using DCT coefficients and motion data encoded in the MPEG compression stream. The core of the proposed approach is a tree-like classifier. Three algorithms are organized in the classifier to deal with the complicated situation in real-world video sequences separately.

We describe a visual information system prototype for searching for images and videos on the World-Wide Web. New visual information in the form of images, graphics, animations and videos is being published on the Web at an incredible rate. However, cataloging this visual data is beyond the capabilities of current text-based Web search engines. In this paper, we describe a complete system by which visual information on the Web is (1) collected by automated agents, (2) processed in both text and visual feature domains, (3) catalogued and (4) indexed for fast search and retrieval. We introduce an image and video search engine which utilizes both text-based navigation and content-based technology for searching visually through the catalogued images and videos. Finally, we provide an initial evaluation based upon the cataloging of over one half million images and videos collected from the Web.

A series of measurement have been made using PTV (Particle Image Velocimetry) in the trailing edge region of the stator row and rotor in the annular transonic cascade at RAe (Royal Aircraft Establishment) Farnborough. The measurements provide an instantaneous quantitative whole field visualisation of an unsteady transonic flow interaction region. This work is the first such measurement to be made in a rotating transonic facility.

We describe a sophisticated system for the collection of numerous streams of image and aircraft state data from an airborne platform. The system collects and stores (for later analysis) 7 different sources of analog video data;3 separate sources of digital video data at aggregate rates of up 32 Megabytes per second, to a removable tape device of 100 Gigabytes or 50 minutes' capacity;low-bandwidth aircraft state information from inertial sources;and other ancillary data. data from all sources are timestamped with a common (GPS derived) time source for synchronization, The task of accurately timestamping multiple disparate data sources is a challenging one, and it is discussed in some detail. Although the technology that can be applied to this kind of effort advances and changes rapidly, certain design paradigms remain valid independent of the specific implementation hardware. General principles of design and operation, as well as system specifics, are described;it is hoped that this record will be a useful reference for future efforts of this kind.

Video-rate registered range and intensity data are at reach of current sensor technology. This wealth of data can be profitably exploited in order to estimate rigid motion parameters as the approaches to 3-D motion estimation, based on the optical flow of both types of data, indicate. This work introduces an alternative for 3-D motion estimation based on the Fourier transform of the 3-D intensity function implicitly described by the registered time-sequences of range and intensity data. The proposed procedure can lead to an unsupervised method for 3-D rigid motion estimation. This method has several advantages related to the fact that it uses the total available information and not sets of features. With respect to memory occupancy the use of a time-sequence of a 3-D intensity function represents a considerable data reduction with respect to a pair of time-sequences of 2-D functions. The proposed technique, which extends to the 3-D case previous frequency domain estimation algorithms developed for the planar case, retain their robustness.

Over the last decade, the video camera has become a common diagnostic/tool for many scientific, industrial and medical applications. The amount of data collected by video capture systems can be enormous. For example, standard NTSC video requires 5 MBytes/sec, with many groups wanting higher resolution either in bit-depth, spatial resolution and/or frame speed. Despite great advances in video capture systems developed for the mass media and teleconferencing markets, the smaller markets of scientific and industrial applications have been ignored. This is primarily due to their need to maintain the independent nature of each camera system and to maintain the high quality of the video data. Many of the commercial systems are capable of digitizing a single camera (B/W or color) or multiple synchronized B/W cameras using an RGB color video capture chip set. In addition,most manufacturers utilize lossy compression to reduce the bandwidth before storing the data to disk To address the needs of the scientific community, a high-performance data and video recorder has been developed. This system utilizes field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) to control the analog and digital signals and to perform realtime lossless compression on the incoming data streams. Due to the flexibility inherent in the system, it is able to be configured for a variety of camera resolutions, frame rates and compression algorithms. In addition, alternative general purpose data acquisition modules are also being incorporated into the design. The modular design of the video/data recorder allows the carrier components to be easily adapted to new bus technology as it becomes available or the data acquisition components to be tailored to a specific application. This paper will describe four state-of-the-art digital video cameras, which provide advanced features that benefit computer image enhancement, manipulation, and analysis. These cameras were designed to reduce the complexity of imaging systems while increasing the accuracy, dynamic range, and detail enhancement of product inspections. Two cameras utilize progressive scan CCD sensors enabling the capture of high-resolution images of moving objects without the need for strobe lights or mechanical shutters. The second progressive scan camera has an unusually high resolution of 1280x1024 and a choice of serial or parallel digital interface for data and control. The other two cameras incorporate Digital Signal Processing (DSP) technology for improved dynamic range, more accurate determination of color, white balance stability, and enhanced contrast of part: features against the background. Successful applications and future product development trends will be discussed. A brief description of analog and digital image capture devices will address the most common questions regarding interface requirements within a typical Machine Vision system overview.

During the summer of 1996, the Topographical Mapping System (TMS) for hazardous and radiological environments and its accompanying three-dimensional (3-D) visualization tool, the Interactive Computer-Enhanced Remote-Viewing System (ICERVS), were delivered to Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). ORNL and Mechanical technology, Inc., performed final acceptance testing of the TMS during the next eight months. The TMS was calibrated and characterized during this period. This paper covers the calibration, characterization, and acceptance testing of the TMS. Development of the TMS and the ICERVS was initiated by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) for the purpose of characterization and remediation of underground storage tar;ks (USTs) at DOE sites across the country. DOE required a 3-D, topographical mapping system suitable for use in hazardous and radiological environments. The intended application is the mapping of the interior of USTs as part of DOE's waste characterization and remediation efforts and to obtain baseline data on the content of the storage tank interiors as well as data on changes in the tank contents and levels brought about by waste remediation steps. Initially targeted for deployment at the Hanford Washington site, the TMS is designed to be a self-contained, compact, and reconfigurable system that is capable of providing rapid, variable-resolution mapping information in poorly characterized workspaces with a minimum of operator intervention.
