A very high density optical memory disk system is newly proposed. The system uses a laser diode array consisting of 100/spl times/100 (=10 thousands) VCSELs (vertical cavity surface emitting lasers) with a very small center hole on each output mirror of each cavity. Each 10 thousand laser diodes can emit evanescent wave on a surface of optical disk medium and can write information bits on it. Each 10 thousand tracks can write and read at once, by inclination of the laser diodes array about 0.57 degrees toward to a tangential direction of the disk. The disk track width is about 20 nm. Each track doesn't need any borderlines between tracks, which means that the total 10 thousand tracks can be traced at once with about a 199 micron meter width. The new system enable us to write and read information as rapidly as 10 G Byte/sec and to store data up to 2 Tera Bytes on one surface of an 120 mm optical disk.

The transmission characteristics of a semiconductor laser amplifier (SLA) based fibre loop delay line memory has been investigated theoretically and experimentally. Measurements show that the datastorage time in an SLA based loop delay line memory may be less than 10 when no optical filtering is employed. The datastorage time of such a delay line memory could be increased to more than 100 if a narrow band optical filter is involved within the loop. Theoretical simulations of output signal waveform and extinction ratio of a fibre loop memory are also given, showing good agreement with the experimental results.

Lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries have demonstrated the ability to fulfill the energy storage needs of many new technologies. The most significant drawbacks of currently available technologies, such as LiCoO/sub 2/ based Li-ion cells, is their high cost and significant environmental hazards. Li-ion cells which use a lithium manganese oxide (LiMn/sub 2/O/sub 4/) spinel) based cathode material should be much less costly and safer than LiCoO/sub 2/ based cells. Performance data from prismatic design cells which use a LiMn/sub 2/O/sub 4/ based cathode material is presented and shown to meet many military performance criteria. The most significant drawback of this technology, at the present time, is the short cycle life.

EOS AM-2, scheduled to launch in 2004, is the second mission in the EOS AM series within NASA's Mission to Planet Earth program. The EOS AM-2 mission will measure the Earth's radiation budget and atmospheric radiation, global land use, land cover change, local-scale ecological and biogeochemical processes, global aerosol distribution and cloud properties, top-of-atmosphere, cloud, and surface angular reflectance functions, surface albedo, aerosol, and vegetation properties, as well as biological and physical processes on land and the ocean. The baseline instrument complement for the EOS AM-2 mission includes five instruments: the Landsat Advanced technology Instrument (LATI), which will continue the Landsat series of measurements;advanced versions of three instrument that will have flown on the EOS AM-1 mission: the Advanced Moderate Resolution Imaging SpectroRadiometer (AMODIS), the Advanced Multiangle Imaging SpectroRadiometer (AMISR), and the Clouds and the Earth Radiant Energy System (CERES);and a new instrument, the Earth Observing Scanning Polarimeter (EOSP). Several options are being explored to deploy this instrument complement, including several single spacecraft configurations as well as multiple spacecraft configurations. The driving requirements contributing to the choice of a spacecraft configuration include measurement continuity, coverage, resolution, geolocation, co-registration, repeat cycle, and calibration;important constraints are cost and launch vehicle availability.
