The electrophysiological mechanisms underlying cardiac arrhythmias are studied by determining the spatiotemporal progression of cardiac depolarization and repolarization, termed cardiac mapping. Analysis of transient events requires information to be obtained from multiple sites simultaneously. The most significant problem with the design of such systems has been the large amount of datastorage required and the rapidity of the composite data stream. Mapping systems with 500 simultaneous channels are common, and 4,000 channel systems have been envisioned. We report a relatively simple approach to this datastorage problem that uses commercially available frame grabber technology coupled to a personal computer. With this approach we have developed a storage system capable of 24,000 channels sampled at 1 Khz with 12 bit resolution. Hybrid mapping systems incorporating optical recording systems utilizing voltage sensitive dyes from devices such as CCD cameras as well as conventional extracellular electrograms can simultaneously utilize this approach.

The off-site operations in a typical refinery involve the movement and storage of raw materials, intermediate and finished products from tanks to processing units and vice versa. This operation is often termed as Oil Movement and storage (OM&S). Any control automation of processing units provides consistent product quality, better conversion yields, stable and safe operations and results in big tangible and intangible benefits such as overall plant efficiency, better usage of planning and scheduling and management information systems, etc. However, the implementation of an automation system for the Oil Movement & storage system requires to carry out an accurate cost and benefits analysis for its economic justifications as there are both tangible and intangible benefits and they must be explored thoroughly. This paper discusses methodology to analyze the OM&S operational data and calculate tangible benefits related to automation of material movement in a refinery. The paper discusses briefly an over-all strategy for the implementation of OM&S automation systems and highlights its salient features.

Three-dimensional images have been produced from SAR data limited to curved aperture paths by imaging techniques usually associated with two dimensional image resolution enhancement. CLEAN and IMP/RELAX algorithms have produced images for two different measurement scenarios. Dynamic range of CLEAN images are dependent upon levels at which artifacts occur although valid scatterers appear below such levels. Artifacts occur due to focusing errors in IMP/RELAX images and in addition due to sidelobe leakage effects in CLEAN images. These are accentuated by the very large sidelobes of shallow apertures. Autofocused images are significantly sharper than those from initial aperture estimates. Methods to expand the processed image volume will extend the general usefulness of this technique as will methods to estimate and display subtle variations in fully populated 3D image volumes. For these purposes resampeling of data onto a rectilinear grid may allow use of image estimation techniques already proven useful for 2D imaging.

Image indexing, namely, the problem of retrieving content information from images in response to queries. is a key problem underlying several operations in image databases. Indexing for object queries, in particular, is a difficult problem, as it requires localizing an unanticipated object in unsegmented images. This inevitably involves search, a computationally intensive operation when based entirely on image features. It is desirable to have efficient data structures that avoid the need for sequential search through images and their features for query localization, Conventional data structures used for database organization are not adequate for image indexing where the object query has to be located in images depicting changed imaging conditions that include pose changes and occlusions. In this paper: we explore the use of a geometric hash table as a suitable data structure for fast image indexing. The technique of geometric hashing has been used in computer vision for indexing a library of models to find candidate model objects for recognition in the isolated image region. Here, however, we use geometric hashing as a technique of fast query localization in unsegmented images of a database. Specifically we show that by using three consecutive features along a curve as basis points for affine invariance. a hash table can be constructed for images that is quadratic in the number of features. The resulting indexing method is also quadratic in the number of features. The query localization by geometric hashing is demonstrated for the problem of indexing of handwritten documents based on handwriting pattern queries.

The original two coordinate step wave motors of synchronous type are analyzed. In them the output member is pushed by the standing waves excited in the input member. The input link may be a rectangular plate or a cylinder or similar. The output member is pressed to the working surface of the input member by the elastic-dissipative elements. The positions of the nodal and peak points of the input member may be changed in various ways. The created model and the performed research of the dynamics determine the characteristics of those motors. The experimental research is complicated because in the input member for example in case of a rectangular plate besides of the orthogonal standing waves the waves of various frequencies travelling and non orthogonal and of damped type arise. That is why for the solution of those problems the method is created based on the method of laser holography and the research is performed. The results of research are effective in the creation of advanced constructions of step motors of the types analyzed.

This manuscript reviews our efforts in demonstrating state-of-the-art planar, batch-fabricable, high-performance vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs). All performance requirements for short-haul data communication applications are clearly established. We concentrate on the flexibility of the established proton-implanted AlGaAs-based (emitting near 850 nm) technology platform, focusing on a standard device design. This structure is shown to meet or exceed performance and producibility requirements. These include > 99% device yield across 3-in-dia. metal-organic vapor phase epitaxy (MOVPE)-grown wafers and wavelength operation across a > 100-nm range. Recent progress in device performance [low threshold voltage (Vth equals 1.53 V); threshold current (Ith equals 0.68 mA); continuous wave (CW) power (Pcw equals 59 mW); maximum and minimum CW lasing temperature (T equals 200 degree(s)C, 10 K); and wall-plug efficiencies ((eta) wp equals 28%)] should enable great advances in VCSEL-based technologies. We also discuss the viability of VCSELs in cryogenic and avionic/military environments. Also reviewed is a novel technique, modifying this established platform, to engineer low-threshold, high-speed, single- mode VCSELs.

The DO-SAR system consists of an airborne SAR sensor unit and ground-based image processing equipment. It has been built in the late eighties. In order to study algorithms, there was the need to generate dual frequency multipolarization data simultaneously. The DO-SAR images allow a comparison on a pixel by pixel basis. The system has been enhanced to along track and across track interferometry. The across track modes are used to generate height profiles with high accuracy. The along track interferometry can be used to estimate the velocity of targets on ground and the velocity of the aircraft. The system has been operating since 1989. It has been used overall in Europe for maritime and oceanic missions. It was used to fly over flooded areas and it provides simultaneous images together with SIRC, in Denmark and Germany. Presently, it is used to generate interferometric single path images in tropic areas in order to classify the tropical forests.

Multiplexing of ATM networks requires flexible switches that efficiently handle data at Gb/s speed. The CellRAM is a single-chip solution implementing a low-cost, low-power ATM multiplexing and switching system. The CellRAM uses a shared memory architecture with 8 input and 8 output, double-buffered, serial accessible, memory ports and a 4Mb DRAM memory core. The CellRAM is in a 0.54μm, 3V double-metal, triple-poly process and is packaged in a 184-pin, quad-flat pack. The CellRAM delivers 1.391Gb/s net ATM cell bandwidth operating at a 43.5MHz clock rate. Supporting unicast and multicasting functions, the CellRAM has all the necessary features for implementing a switch. This architecture anticipates evolutionary increases in memory density with advances in DRAM technology.
