The electrophysiological mechanisms underlying cardiac arrhythmias are studied by determining the spatiotemporal progression of cardiac depolarization and repolarization, termed cardiac mapping. Analysis of transient events requires information to be obtained from multiple sites simultaneously. The most significant problem with the design of such systems has been the large amount of data storage required and the rapidity of the composite data stream. Mapping systems with 500 simultaneous channels are common, and 4,000 channel systems have been envisioned. The authors report a relatively simple approach to this data storage problem that uses commercially available frame grabber technology coupled to a personal computer. With this approach they have developed a storage system capable of 24,000 channels sampled at 1 kHz with 12 bit resolution. Hybrid mapping systems incorporating optical recording systems utilizing voltage sensitive dyes from devices such as CCD cameras as well as conventional extracellular electrograms can simultaneously utilize this approach.

Confocal microscopy allows for 3D volumetric image acquisition and in many cases simultaneous 3D multi-mode image acquisition, where each image voxel encompasses multiple values representing the output from the different imaging (contrast) modes (i.e. intensity, phase, polarisation etc.) of the confocal microscope. The amount of the acquired data is therefore increased significantly, making essential the employment of data reduction techniques. In this paper the authors present techniques and preliminary results for 3D volumetric image compression that allow for reduced image compression storage requirements, improved transmission and more efficient browsing through large amounts of stored data.

Delayed write in a multilevel file system cache hierarchy offers a way to improve performance in diverse client/server scenarios, such as integrating mass store into a distributed file system or providing distributed file system access over low-speed links. Using file system traces and cache simulations, we explore extensions and modifications to the traditional client-caching model employed in such file systems as AFS, Sprite, and DFS. High cache hit rates at an intermediate cache server-a machine logically interposed between clients and servers that provides cached file service to the clients-combined with high client cache hit rates lend practicality to an integrated mass storage file system. In such a system, magnetic tape or optical-based mass storage devices may be used as a first-class data repository, fronted by disk and RAM caches to offer acceptable access times to the large, but slow, mass storage system. Similarly, a high cache hit rate is necessary for users accessing file systems via low-speed links, where a delayed write intermediate caching server can mediate traffic to make better use of available bandwidth. In an example taken from mobile computing, an intermediate server might be used as a docking station at a user's home. This arrangement would be convenient for users of mobile computers who upload large amounts of data generated while operating in disconnected mode. Simulations of delayed write caching strategies are applicable to both the mass storage and low-speed link scenarios.

Summary form only given. One of the unique and perhaps the most attractive features of an optical memory is its ability to store and retrieve information in a bit-parallel format. Recently, we have proposed a new scheme for parallel data storage in TDOM. This scheme was proven to be practical and can be implemented with existing technologies. In a proof-of-principle experiment, four wavelength-multiplexed single-page volume spectral holograms, generated with black-and-white transparencies, were successfully stored in a single spatial location at a speed of approximately 23 /spl mu/s/frame. The experimental results project system's input/output bandwidth to exceed 40 Gbps, two orders of magnitude faster than a semiconductor cache memory. Here, we report on the use of the proposed scheme to demonstrate the storage of a large number of spectral holograms in a Eu/sup 3+/-doped Y/sub 2/SiO/sub 5/ crystal.

One important possible application of photon echoes is all-optical data storage. Photon echoes have a number of advantageous properties that make diem very good candidates for such applications, such as high areal density (1 Tb/cm2 has been projected [1], which should be compared with approximately 1 Mb/cm2 for commercially available CMOS memories today) and readout speeds >THz have been experimentally demonstrated [2]. We have addressed the problem of how to selectively erase data bits stored using photon echoes. One solution to this problem is to coherently add a new echo, phase shifted 180 degrees relative to the original echo, and thus achieve selective erasure of data [3].

Vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs) are rapidly nearing practical widespread implementation in key applications such as data communications. Because of numerous advantages relative to either edge-emitting lasers or light-emitting diodes, even broader application of this device technology is anticipated with further improvements in performance characteristics and wavelength coverage. In many cases, such advances hinge on advances in the underlying materials and process technology. This talk will overview the impact that different epitaxial design and process approaches, including selective oxidation, have had on improving VCSEL performance benchmarks over a broad wavelength range.

Coherent transient optical memories and signal processors (CTOMs and CTOPs) take advantage of an inhomogeneously broadened absorber (IBA) to store and process temporal waveforms with data bandwidths exceeding 10 GHz and with extermely high storage and processing densities. In this paper, we propose and demonstrate techniques to compensate for the deleterious effects of dephasing in CTOMs and CTOPs. Compensation is achieved by applying an intensity ramp, which matches the inverse of the decay while maintaining roughly the same pulse area in the pattern stream to be recorded. We used the 783-nm transition of Tm/sup 3+/:YAG (0.1 at.%) at cryogenic temperatures to demonstrate the compensation techniques.

Chalcogenide glasses may be used to form refractive and relief structures for applications in integrated optics or optical data storage. Photodarkening and the attendant photo-expansion effect are the primary recording mechanisms in these materials. Photodarkening only a small region of the glass leads to stress at the interface between the darkened and unexposed regions due to volume differences between these two regions. This enhances the volume changes of the photoexpansion effect to fabricate surface relief gratings. This work focuses on using the large volume changes and the non-local nature of the photo-expansion effect to fabricate micro-lenses on the surface of As/sub 2/S/sub 3/ glasses. Previously reported lenslets were fabricated by irradiating samples with focused He-Ne laser light at 632.8 nm.

Summary form only given. advances in modern healthcare have been enabled to a large extent by the application of diagnostic imaging, introduced just over a century ago. In the past several decades, the invention of new forms of electronic imaging have grown to be indispensable for current medical practice. However, new forces are now occurring that portend significant different directions for the future of electronics in medical imaging. Historically, the application of electronics to medical imaging has been a technology push, with research discovering new forms of information to detect, and products introduced and accepted by the marketplace with little question of efficacy or cost benefit. Because of society's reaction to the overall escalating cost of healthcare, there is now a reluctance to accept new electronic products without economic and clinical justification. Moreover, to date electronics has been primarily applied to the front of the "imaging chain", in new forms of image acquisition. With a wealth of imagery already in hand, market pull is beginning to direct the application of electronics to solve problems in other parts of the imaging chain, e.g. transmission, storage, display, and image management. The authors review the present state of electronic medical imaging and comment on future trends powered by the aforementioned forces.

Gaining access to the ultrawide bandwidth of optical channels through a suitable electro-optical interface is an important issue for future optoelectronic technology. Considering the broad-bandwidth nature of relativistic free-electron generators of violet and ultraviolet radiation, it would be reasonable to devise a scheme based on the same principles for electro-optical interfacing in the near infrared and even soft X-ray regime. Realisation of such a device does not seem to be unrealistic considering the growing advances in electron-beam injection and microsystems technology. For optoelectronic applications, such as those for very-high bit-rate data communication, the device must be compatible to an existing system. Therefore, the interaction design in a small and economic size has to be considered. On this basis, we initiated a search for a device by looking for potential schemes which take advantage of relativistic electrons and electromagnetic field interaction. We previously adopted a characteristic interaction model with small dimensions and studied the electronic to optical transition/modulation process. The operating characteristics, e.g., coupled wavelengths and gain, associated with the electro-optical coupling process were derived in terms of model parameters and the challenges were defined accordingly. As a continuation of this work, here we explore an interaction design based on the use of cyclotron relativistic electrons. One important advantage of this scheme is that electrons can be easily re-used for another interaction cycle. Another advantage is that for the same physical dimensions, this design offers a longer interaction length which results in gain and power enhancement.
