We present the design of a parallel high-performance chipset for computing 1-D complex fast Fourier transforms (FFTs). The chipset is composed of two chips-a photonic FFT processing engine (PFFT) and a photonic datastorage element (PRAM). Using this chipset, a number of high-speed systems can be created. The chipset is compatible with a number of available interconnect technologies, such as free-space optical interconnection schemes involving the flip-chip integration of submicron CMOS ICs with GaAs chips containing 2-D arrays of multiple quantum well diode optical receivers and transmitters.

Daily average global solar radiation data of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, station from year 1970-1994 was taken in the evaluation. The percentage ratio of the solar radiation energy below 3 kWh/m/sup 2//d based on the number of consecutive days, and the probability density and the cumulative frequency distribution of the solar radiation energy were calculated for each month. The evaluation shows that the cost of PV systems can be reduced by carefully evaluating the consecutive bad solar radiation days and the daily water balance. The consecutive negative water balance values are summed, and the lowest value from the series of values is the worst consecutive bad solar radiation days. This lowest value is exactly the amount of the extra water required to fulfil the water demand, and is equal to the size of the water tank. This is the optimum tank size that makes the PV system operating at full capacity.

Suspended particulate matter is a primary variable with respect to biological and physical processes in the marine environment. The authors have developed an integrated towed instrument platform system to analyze as broad a spectrum of particulate sizes as possible using state-of-the-art technology to address basic oceanographic, environmental and military issues. The High Resolution Sampler (HRS) system uses several technologies to address different size classes of the marine particle spectrum. The 50 /spl mu/ to 2 cm (spherical diameter, SD) size classes are quantified using optical Plankton Counters (OPC, Focal Technologies, Inc.), employed alone or in tandem. The 50 /spl mu/ and greater size classes are also quantified using a non-intrusive laser light sheet/video system as well as a collimated dual light sheet system under development. As an alternative to optical systems, the authors are developing a multiple frequency, miniaturized forward-looking "chirp" sonar for ensonifying a parcel of water directly ahead of the light sheet (see Remsen et al., this volume). All data are collected in situ and transferred to deck for real-time display and storage. Verification systems include a plankton cod-end (50-162 /spl mu/ mesh) carousel (20 positions) net system for collecting particles which have passed through the optical sensors. The integrated optical-electronic sensor package is mounted on a towed vehicle which has been sea tested over several years in the Gulf of Mexico and Weddell Sea.

There is a considerable interest in designing automatic systems that can scan a given paper document and store it on electronic media for easier storage, manipulation and access. Most documents contain graphics and images, in addition to text. Thus, the document image has to be segmented to identify text and image regions, so that appropriate techniques may be applied to those regions. In this paper, we have presented a new technique for image segmentation in which text and image regions, in a given document image, are automatically identified. Technique is based on differential-processing text extraction concept. The proposed technique is capable of analysing complex document image layouts. Document image is processed by using textural feature analysis. Results of the proposed method are presented with test images which demonstrate the robustness of the technique.

The conceptualization of a new manufacturing and repair system began in 199l. This paper explains how the system of 1991 evolved into the system of 1996. The original system proposed consolidating diverse activities into a single, modern facility, built especially for the repair of electronic modules. Management's role was to coordinate all activities from a central point and repair technicians would be given the tools to communicate with all relevant systems. Only a portion of the similar activities have been consolidated into one building. Management decided that oversight, not control, was a goal that all systems did not need to be fully integrated. The original concept envisioned mainframes for central control. LANs, cable, and fiber optics were the connecting links for workstations and other systems. Technicians would enter data, support systems would supply technical and managerial information and databases would accumulate data and produce information. Support systems would schedule work and deliver items to the work areas, as required, without human intervention. Personnel would be free to devote their time to value added tasks. As the system developed, management realized that people needed stress relief and social contact. People needed to leave their work area for breaks; therefore, they created reasons to leave their work area, such as manually scheduling workload or going to the storage location to query the operator about a specific part and then hand carry that part back to the workbench. Full integration of support systems with io-MARs is coming with Internet and Netscape, a new technology not envisioned in the original plans. The reactive precursors M(NMe/sub 2/)/sub 3/ (M=Sb, Bi) and (Me/sub 1/Si)/sub 2/Te were used to deposit films of M/sub 2/Te/sub 3/ (M=Sb, Bi) on Si(111) cut 4/spl deg/ off-axis, GaAs(100), and Kapton substrates between 25/spl deg/C and 150/spl deg/C in a low pressure MOCVD reactor. The film growth process is a novel N,N-dimethylamino-trimethylsilane (Me/sub 3/SiNMe/sub 2/) elimination reaction and not pyrolysis reactions employed in conventional MOCVD techniques. X-ray diffraction data show the crystalline quality and orientation of the resulting polycrystalline films were dependent on the substrate structure and growth temperature. Amorphous films were deposited below 50/spl deg/C. Films deposited at 75/spl deg/C for Sb/sub 2/Te/sub 3/ and 125/spl deg/C for Bi/sub 2/Te/sub 3/ were highly oriented with the (015) reflection plane parallel to the substrate surface. Films of Sb/sub 2/Te/sub 3/ deposited at 150/spl deg/C were highly oriented with the [00l] reflection planes parallel to the substrate surface. The electrical properties and composition of Bi/sub 2/Te/sub 3/ films deposited at 125/spl deg/C on Kapton were independent of the V/VI precursor ratio used. Variation in the composition of a Sb/sub x/Bi/sub 2-x/Te/sub 3/ ternary film across the susceptor was observed due to differences in the reaction kinetics for formation of Sb/sub 2/Te/sub 3/ and Bi/sub 2/Te/sub 3/. This unique deposition reaction provides an alternative route to prepare group V chalcogenide materials which have potential applications in solar cells, reversible opticalstorage, and thermoelectrics.

Throughout the 30-year history of holographic storage, an enormous number of material systems have been studied for use as the recording medium. In spite of the years and effort expended, the ideal material has not been identified and interest in holographic storage has waned. Recently, however, advances in both organic and inorganic photorefractive materials has rekindled interest in volume holography, not only for information storage but also as a technology that may be important for optical interconnects, neural networks and optical computing. Interest is further enhanced by continuing development in some of the enabling technologies, such as CCD arrays and spatial light modulators, necessary to make a viable storage product. After a brief introduction to holographic storage, this paper will concentrate on defining the systems requirements that drive material selection and review recent advances in photorefractive materials and techniques that address key issues. Included will be a discussion of multiplexing methods as well as various means to inhibit, or at least manage, destructive writing and reading. The paper will conclude with a discussion of the remaining critical issues as a focus for continued research and development.

Polymer-TCNQ(tetracyanoquinodimethane) charge transfer complexes were synthesized using organic polycations as electron donor, These materials are soluble in organic solvents and spin coatable. The materials are spin coated on polycarbonate substrate with aluminium reflecting layer, and their optical memory effects ate tested at 830nm. With the recording power of 8mW and recording speed of 1. 2m/s, the maximum CNR(carrier to noise ratio) of 40dB was observed.
