Summary form only given. In summary, a novel free-space integrated micro-optical disk pickup head has been realized using surface-micromachining techniques. A focal spot with the FWHM equal to 2.6 /spl mu/m/spl times/6.7 /spl mu/m is obtained. This new integrated optical disk pickup head can significantly reduce its size and weight as well as improve the transfer rate of optical data storage systems. The freespace micro-optical bench technology can be extended to many other micro-optics systems.

This tutorial describes the rapidly growing field of near-field optics, especially photon scanning tunneling microscopy (or, scanning near field optical microscopy) and its application to nano-scale photonics and quantum optics. Principle of the nano-metric resolution photon STM, fabrication technology of probe tip including functional super-tip, and control system for data acquisition are reviewed. Results of imaging experiments on photonic devices as well as biological samples are demonstrated. Novel quantum optical pehnomena originating from short-range electromagnetic interactions observed in the fluorescence detection are presented. As an application to nano-scale photonics, possibility of high density optical storage is discussed. Furthermore, in order to explore the new field of atom manipulation, control of thermal motion of atoms in vacuum, e.g., an atom guide, are discussed. Finally a future outlook of the relevant near-field optics will be given.

This paper compares performances of several linear and nonlinear equalization/detection methods for magnetooptical storage channels. The simulation data sets with linear and nonlinear distortion are generated based on the measured characteristics of a real magneto-optical disk, in which the data is (1,7) run-length limited coded and recorded in NRZI format. For linear signals, FDTS/DP of depth 3 has the lowest bit error rate. For nonlinear signals, the nonlinear detection methods for fixed delay tree search with decision (FDTS/DF) and multilevel decision feedback equaliser (MDFE) using look-up table achieve a significant improvement in performance over the linear methods. For PRML (partial response maximum likelihood) with PR II, however, the minimum run length constraint is the most dominant factor for the performance for both linear and nonlinear signals.

The performance of a computer network is commonly measured by the maximum minimum time required to move certain amount of data between any 2 nodes in the network. Due to the advances in technology, links in the network may now be upgraded, for instance to optical fibre links, so that better performance can be achieved. We study the link upgrade problem for networks. We first show that the link upgrade problem is NP-complete. We also show that, a closely related problem, the minimum cost link upgrade problem is NP-complete even if the underlying topology of the network is a linear array. However, for certain classes of networks, the link upgrade problem can be solved in polynomial time. For general networks, we provide effective heuristics for the above problems.

This paper investigates the use of autoregressive (AR) spectral estimation techniques as a method of encoding high range resolution (HRR) radar data. These techniques produce a reduction in disk storage space while preserving an estimate the spectrum of the data. After subsequent encoding of the AR parameters the data reduction is two orders of magnitude with good fidelity of the resulting estimate. An overview the research is provided in which AR spectral estimation is applied to frequency modulated continuous wave (FMCW) radar data.

Major advances in optical fiber transmission and switching technology have enabled the development of very high speed networks with data rates of the order of gigabits per second. It is anticipated that in the future, wide area gigabit networks will interconnect database servers around the globe creating extremely powerful distributed information systems. In this paper, we examine the implications of such a high speed network on data access and sharing techniques and propose a lock-based concurrency control protocol and a log-based recovery protocol that ensures data consistency in gigabit-networked databases. Both protocols exploit the characteristics of a gigabit network to enhance the performance of the database system and, in particular, the fact that the size of the message is less of a concern than the number of sequential phases of message passing.

The use of holographic optics technology in optical data storage offers a road map to realize an integrated optical head as well as to build a compact and cost-effective optical head. In 1987, the author and his colleagues first proposed and demonstrated an optical pickup using a multifunctional holographic optical element, which can be fabricated using photolithographic method, for CD players.1 This is the result that they conquered double difficulties in holographic optical element use for optical disk heads, that is, low diffraction efficiency and large chromatic aberration. They also extended the function of holographic optical element as a polarizing element using a birefringent material and the ion exchange fabrication method.2 The polarizing holographic optical element is now used in 5.25″ magneto-optical disk drive with 1.3 GB recording capacity as a key device. A prismless magneto-optical head has also been proposed applying an oblique angle incident polarizing holographic element. For the further advanced optical heads, hybrid integrated optical heads for thin magneto-optical disk drive have been proposed using the polarizing holographic element, in combining with the chip integration techniques.3 This paper will review these technology development including the basic ideas during the development and try to show the road map for the future integrated optical head.

Laser gyros are often applied in safety of flight and/or mission critical situations. This means that a very high assurance of performance is required before they are shipped from the factory. This assurance is provided with comprehensive and historically expensive factory acceptance testing. Honeywell has developed a gyro test facility which improves test quality and reliability, improves data handling and storage, while reducing testing costs. When compared to the original computer controlled test complex to support Honeywell's laser gyros of the last decade, this new gyro test facility: had a sharply lower initial cost; costs less to operate and maintain; handles many orders of magnitude of additional data at much higher speeds; was developed, certified and placed in use several calendar months sooner; is much more reliable; eliminates operator error from the final product; and is completely modular (hardware and software) to allow rapid response to both product and technology change.

In support of advanced electric gun research in progress within the US Army, a mobile pulsed power system has been developed and made operational as part of the Army Research Laboratory (ARL) electric gun research facility. This mobile system has a maximum energy storage capability of 4 MJ, and it can deliver gigawatt levels of pulsed power over time periods of several milliseconds. The configuration of the system is that of a pulse-forming network (PFN) that is comprised of a bank of 80 high-energy capacitors, pulse-shaping inductors, switches and other electronic components which are designed to provide a variety of pulsed power profiles for electric propulsion research. The prime power for the PFN consists of a 1 MW diesel generator interconnected with a 27 kV constant voltage power supply. The system is controlled and monitored with electronic instrumentation from a remote control station which makes use of optical fiber signal transmission techniques. Recently acquired experimental pulsed power data from the facility are presented and discussed.

In recent years short wavelength coherent radiation lying in the blue and UV range has attracted wide attention for a variety of applications, including laser printing, optical data storage, display technology and undersea communication et al. Some relative new type nonlinear optical crystals such as KTiOPO4 (KTP), KTiOAsO4 (KTA), LiB3O5 (LBO), β-BaB2O4 (BBO), KNbO3 et al. have been widely used to main solid state laser (Nd: YAG, Nd:YLF, Ti:Al2O3 et al.), dye laser, excimer laser and diode laser et al. By frequency up conversion (sum frequency mixing) more short wavelength coherent radiation (even short to 190 nm) could be obtained. Using different nonlinear crystals and different technology a wide wavelength range (188 nm–459 nm) can be generated by sum frequency mixing. SFM with different crystals was summary in this paper.
