The increasing demands to monitor biological activity, in particular, fish stocks, has led to the development of a self-contained digital echo sounder capable of recording internally for extended periods of time. The current unit operates at 200 kHz with a 6/spl deg/ beam angle, and utilises a 200 Mb hard drive for datastorage. Results are presented for a number of deployments requiring differing sampling strategies, ranging from a 9 month time series in the Beaufort Sea to two weeks in the Skeena River B.C.

Nondestructive evaluation (NDE) using X-rays is becoming indispensable for detecting microdefects in new materials currently used in aerospace and other engineering disciplines. Existing X-ray sensors pose limitations on the speed of operation due to persistence of the sensor and a problematic tradeoff between the sensor thickness and spatial resolution. To address these limitations we are developing a large area structured CsI(Tl) imaging sensor for NDE using CCD based radiographic and computed tomographic systems. The sensor is formed by vapor deposition of CsI(Tl) onto a specially designed fiberoptic substrate. Our work has produced X-ray sensors with a factor of 4.5 greater light output, at least three orders of magnitude faster decay time response, and greater spatial resolution (16% MTF at 14 lp/mm) compared to the currently used high density Tb/sub 2/O/sub 3/ doped fiberoptic glass scintillators. These performance advances will address the limitations of existing detector technology by producing high quality images and fast scan times required for real-time NDE inspection. Performance measurements for prototype CsI (Tl) scintillator converters are presented. With these new sensors the development of larger area fiberoptic taper based CCD detectors with millisecond data acquisition capabilities and high spatial resolution suitable for NDE applications will be possible.

A desktop design and manufacturing system for binary diffractive elements, MacBEEP, was developed with the optical researcher in mind. optical processing systems for specialized tasks such as cellular automation computation and fractal measurement were constructed. A new family of switchable holograms has enabled several applications for control of laser beams in optical memories. New spatial light modulators and optical logic elements have been demonstrated based on a more manufacturable semiconductor technology. Novel synthetic and polymeric nonlinear materials for opticalstorage are under development in an integrated memory architecture. SBIR programs enable creative contributions from smaller companies, both product oriented and technology oriented, and support advances that might not otherwise be developed.

We have demonstrated storage of 2 Kbits of data at 40 Mbits/s in the Eu3+ doped Y2SiO5 crystal using the time-domain echo approach. Preventing coherent saturation, caused by the long data pulse train, is critical to the successful implementation of this technique. The experimentally inferred storage capacity of 6 x 10(4) spatial spot demonstrates the potential of this optical memory.

Large capacity is a strong requirement for the next generation of magneto-optical disks in order to manage huge amount of data such as digital images. We reported that superresolution can be realized by using an exchange-coupled multilayer disk in 199 1. This novel technology is called Magnetically Induced Super Resolution (MSR) and it more than doubles the readout resolution limit of the conventional optical disk system without shortening the laser wavelength or increasing the numerical aperture (NA) of the optical lens 1),2)• The essence of MSR is that a part of the focused light spot used for readout is masked, so the effective aperture becomes much narrower than that for conventional detection. Figure 1 shows two types of detection, front aperture detection (FAD) and rear aperture detection (BAD). Since dc light is irradiated onto moving media, the medium at the rear of the light spot is much hotter. In FAD, the light spot area overlapped by the heated area is optically masked, so the signal is detected from the crescent-shaped aperture. In BAD, the crescent-shaped area is masked because the signal is erased by the initializing field prior to the readout. We would like to review some of our investigations and clarify what is important to realize an MSR system.

Recent advances in personal computer technology have made these low-cost platforms quite attractive for the implementation of radiological workstations, particularly in those cases where high throughput is not critical (such as clinical review workstations). In light of this observation, the objectives of this on-going project are threefold: (1) to identify the characteristics and performance specifications that are desirable in a radiological review workstation (within the UCSF PACS architecture), (2) to review current personal computer technology in terms of its ability to support such a workstation, and (3) to design and implement a prototype hardware and software architecture. This paper outlines our progress to data and discusses some of our projections for the near future.

The paper presents that modular separation of open systems components is vital to the success of disc based video server solutions. For application of spot playback, systems such as Dynatech's digistore are poised to exploit the cast rate of technology change in computer peripherals, including storage media. Manufacturers and users can leverage these advances without obsolescence of the systems as a whole, potentionally extending functionality to new applications such as a program.

A consortium of American companies and universities - called The National storage Industry Consortium (NSIC) - has been formed for the purpose of soliciting US Government funding to support `preproprietary' technology initiatives focused on accelerating technical advances in datastoragetechnology. A set of 5-year projects was funded last year. The goals of these projects include attaining a recording density of 10 gigabits per square inch on magnetic disk and 1 terabyte per cubic inch on magnetic tape;goals for opticalstorage are similar to these. A brief review will be given of the NSIC organization, its technical program structure, and the status of the ARPA-funded technical activities.

In the study, demonstrated is the possibility of peristrophic multiplexing to store several hundred holograms in thin films. This capability was previously possible only with materials approx.1cm thick. In this way, the approach makes it possible to fabricate compact 3-D holographic disks with storage density.
