The authors discuss several technologies that can improve the performance of database systems. They identify several issues that must be addressed for the commercialization of these technologies. The study is summarized as follows: (i) VLSI circuits are not the bottleneck for associative search and aggregation operations; (ii) holographical technology is promising for high-density, high-speed, and nonvolatile random access storage (further research on visible semiconductor lasers and holographical material is needed for a read-write-erase device); and (iii) wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) technology can solve the data communication problem with less power consumption and cable complexity than electrical technology.< >

A description is given how IBM's Enterprise Systems requirements for data management are implemented in the ES/9000 process series. The ES/9000 processor family is the next step in efficient data movement/management for data that reside anywhere in the Enterprise. To manage this vast amount of data, certain high end ES/9000 models utilize four levels of memory (L1 or first level cache, L2 or second level buffer, L3 or main store and L4 or expanded store). Design trade-offs were made to improve processor availability. The processors have been designed to achieve fault tolerant function in power, processor and memory arrays. For example, if one of the power supplies fails, others increase their output to provide full power to the system. Extensive use is made of error detection/correction codes throughout the processor complex. Expanded storage incorporates a sophisticated error correction capability. All double bit errors are corrected, and triple bit errors, are detected.< >

The performance of the FDDI (Fiber Distributed data Interface) network with synchronous traffic is analyzed. Two types of synchronous traffic are considered: voice traffic and video traffic. A finite buffer is assumed at each station to store arriving packets. In the analysis, voice traffic is modeled as an interrupted Poisson process, and video traffic is modeled as a discrete-state continuous-time Markov process. Through the approximate analysis, the average queue length, the average waiting time and the packet loss rate are derived. Simulation results are also shown in order to examine the accuracy of the approximation.< >

Magneto-optical recording disk drives have been introduced into the marketplace by several companies. This paper reviews the basic technology which makes these drives possible and then describes on-going research which is expected to lead to future advances. New technologies such as direct overwrite recording, optical heads using laser diode arrays for parallel track readout, shorter wavelength lasers, advanced signal processing, improved modulation and error correction codes, and lightweight heads using optical fibers and/or integrated optical components are expected to lead to order of magnitude improvements in storage densities and data rates, as well as substantial improvements in access times.

Recent progress in the opticaldatastoragetechnology has created new R&D and manufacturing opportunities for the optical coating community. datastoragetechnology has so far been confined to the semiconductor and magnetics industry. The emergence of optical media for datastorage has opened up manufacturing potential for the optical coating industry which has largely been devoted to the manufacture of conventional coatings such as antireflection coatings, laser mirrors, optical filters and beam splitters. Multilayer coatings needed for opticalstorage media are within the scope of the manufacturing environment in a conventional optical coating plant with reasonable adaptations. Progress in the opticalstoragetechnology is generally reported in special topical meetings devoted to this technology. Therefore a survey of recent developments in this important field is considered appropriate for this conference devoted to new developments in thin film technology. In this review, we present the salient features, particularly the design aspects, of multilayer thin film storage media, and discuss recent developments in erasable phase change and magneto-opticalstorage media.

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) is proceeding with an evolutionary approach to creating integrated multi-discipline image management systems. A goal of this development is an integrated Astrophysics data System (ADS). The system will allow astrophysics research teams to correlate spectral images from multiple research satellites. The ADS is the first large scale integrated research data system planned at NASA. The Earth Observing System data and Information System (EosDIS) will create a similar system for earth sciences research. These two programs will store and retrieve more than 10 terabytes of satellite image data per day. Ford Aerospace is actively involved in the design and development of both the ADS and EosDIS. This paper reviews the role of opticalstoragetechnology in supporting these image storage and retrieval systems. It explores system limits based upon the current state of opticalstoragetechnology. Also discussed, are those advances in opticalstoragetechnology that could increase the role for opticalstorage in NASA's image management systems.

The Automated Patent System (APS) was designed, among other things, to assist the patent examiner in performing the patent search. It is a fully distributed system that uses custom-built high-resolution dual-display intelligent workstations, optical file servers, mainframes, and support computers networked together using Ethernet technology. The system is composed of two parts which are highly integrated: a full text search system and a patent image retrieval system. When fully deployed, APS will have an image data base of up to 30 terabytes being accessed from over 1000 workstations. The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (PTO) has had problems with their optical drives, and although they are fairly stable today, we still experience a moderately high hardware failure rate. The optical drive problems include media instability, hardware design errors, vendor problems, and configuration control failures. We intend to purchase additional drives in the future, and are re-evaluating the exclusive use of opticalstorage in light of recent advances in magnetic storagetechnology.
