This paper reports a novel experimental method for investigating the microscopical readout characteristics of optical recording media in conjunction with optical and electron microscopy. The leaf spring-supporting guide is employed for reading out the written bit information by scanning the recording medium surface with a focused laser beam. The relationship between the readout signal waveform and the shape and structure of the written bits has been investigated for several examples of phase change optical recording media.

The resulting devices, how they work, and applications relative to logistics responsibilities are described. In-application parameters are discussed. Real-world application experience is set forth in a manner that can be related to most electronic, electromechanical, and mechanical equipment. Qualification status is reviewed. data gathering is addressed to illustrate capabilities for computerized data acquisition. References throughout Department of Defense documentation are cited for the desirability of the discussed tamper-proof acquisition of data to determine warranty status for both performance and mean time between failure (MTBF) incentive programs.

Summary form only given, as follows. During the decade of the 1980s, optical-memory systems made the successful transition from research to product. This presentation reviews the major events of that period of time with particular emphasis on the present commercial and consumer optical memory-products. The basic principles and advantages of optical memories are reviewed, and the different system types are described with attention to the applications and users that require them. The systems include read-only-memories (CD and CD-ROM), write-once-read-many-times (WORM and WORM/DRAW), and erasable (magnetooptic and phase change) types. The media used in each of these systems are discussed, including the performance factors for the different kinds. The key system components such as recording source, recording optics, and focusing and tracking systems are also discussed. A look at the future of this technology is presented.

This paper describes a new approach to measure residual birefringence in a transparent compact disc (i.e. before the sputtering process). This approach is based on the whole field analysis of the disc's image by a specially designed digital image analysis system combined with a classical circular polariscope. The system can resolve retardations in the range of 5 - 90 nm (which is the range of interest to the compact disc industry) with 2 nm accuracy. Such accuracy is sufficient for a quality control of the compact disc manufacturing process. Using the advanced approach of the whole field analysis, one can setup an on-line inspection system, which will be capable to detect residual birefringence above the prescribed threshold and notify he operator.
