ECL ASIC gate arrays continue to get bigger and faster. A migration path shows 1200 gates as state-of-the-art in 1979 growing to 2500 gates in 1983, 10,000 gates in 1987, and reaching 30,000 to 50,000 gates today. advances in bipolar process technology and manufacturing pave the way for ECL ASIC products to exceed 100,000 equivalent gates in the not too distant future. The ability to plan future systems around large ECL ASIC products, above 30,000 to 50,000 gates, presents new design challenges. It is difficult to define high performance systems that have large logic blocks separated from RAM circuits. The future of large ECL ASIC products will depend on efficiently merging dense, high performance RAM blocks with high speed ECL logic circuits.

The use of optical recordings in broadcasting has so far been largely limited to playing compact discs. However, the advent of recordable and eraseable optical disc technologies might change that given the development of suitable recording/replaying equipment. Disc based removeable recording media are well suited to audio recording, especially where the recordings might need minimal editing prior to their broadcasting. optical technologies are well suited to archival applications since the recording is buried below the surface. In many other ways, the optical disc recording systems that are being developed for computer applications appear well suited to audio recording applications. It is not considered that the broadcaster's requirements are so much different from domestic or other industrial applications of the technology. Therefore, the potential of optical discs has been examined and some methods devised which might allow the broadcaster to capitalise on the development of this technology which is at present targeted to domestic and computer industry applications.

A sensitive device structure for the storage of optical signals is presented. It is based on an indium tin oxide - silicon nitride - aluminum - silicon dioxide - silicon (MNMOS) combination. The light signal is transformed to electric charge through optical excitation of charge carriers in the two metal layers. The charge is transported in the nitride conduction and valence bands to the aluminum. The latter layer is confined between the two insulator layers, thus forming a potential well for the storage of the optically induced charges. Light exposure times down to 0.1 ms are enough to store readable data by a light power of 90 μW/cm 2 at 2.2 eV photon energy.

A multiplexed accelerated life test system (MALTS) was developed to perform torque and electrical resistance measurements on sliprings as a function of time and rotational speed. The MALTS consists of 30 test fixtures with the associated electronics, all of which are controlled by a single PC. This automation required cost-effective application of state-of-the-art technology in the areas of optical torque measuring devices, high bandwidth-low current milliohm measurements, data acquisition techniques, and high-capacity storage media. In addition to performing precise low-level resistance and torque measurements, it is necessary to control a switching network consisting of 840 relays, independently vary the speed of 30 drive motors, and monitor and control the temperature of all 30 test chambers. data acquisition parameters such as sampling frequency, data averaging, and resolution are addressed. It is hypothesized that a correlation may exist between electrical measurements for the torque and wear modes so that these measurements could be used as predictors of wear.< >

The author examines a promising datastoragetechnology, namely, a combination of removable, reversible optical disks and dynamic RAMs. Semiconductor memories have virtually instantaneous access times to data compared with the times required in a rigid disk for the head arm to move to the correct track, for the vibrations to settle, and for the required record to come around to the head. Thermo-magneto-optical disks achieve equal bit densities but at heights greater by a factor of 10,000. They also achieve track densities higher by about ten times. This virtually eliminates the possibility of head crashes and enables disks to be removable thus expanding the storage capability of the drive. The three most common processes for reversible disks are outlined.

The technology, allowing increased capacity, is commercially practical due to the use of low-cost components similar to those developed for compact-disk (CD) technology combined with existing flexible-disk drive technologies and hardware. This combination in a flexible-disk drive has been called FLoptical and results in a drive capable of storing over ten times the data now stored on a standard high-density floppy disk.
