Both cost and storage capacity breakthroughs are achieved by combining optical servo with magnetic data-recording techniques. The technology, allowing increased capacity, is commercially practical due to the use of low-cost components similar to those developed for compact-disk (CD) technology combined with existing flexible-disk drive technologies and hardware. This combination in a flexible disk drive has been called Floptical and results in a drive capable of storing over ten times the data now stored on a standard high density floppy disk.< >

The authors review the design, development and application of a particular design of self supporting metal-free, optical cable for data and telephony transmission, for use on power lines with long spans. The authors also describe significant advances in design and installation techniques and report experimental and operational results which enhance confidence in this technology, which is of growing interest to overhead line and telecommunication engineers. It is concluded that this cable type can be safely and economically operated on long-span, overhead distribution lines.< >

At the Cornell Electron storage Ring (CESR), a technique has been developed for local measurement and correction of the transverse betatron coupling. This is compared to the standard global coupling correction that minimizes the closest approach of the two normal mode frequencies as observed on a spectrum analyzer. In the proposed local coupling technique, the coupling of the transverse betatron modes is measured and corrected at about 90 different points in the machine. The measurements consist of experimental values for the normalized aspect ratio of the beam, the square root of the vertical to the horizontal emittance. DIMAT, a single-beam simulation program, has been modified to calculate coupling as a function of skew quadrupole strengths. A least squares fitting routine finds values of skew quadrupole strengths which reproduce the measured coupling data. These results are used to change the strengths of about 12 of the skew quadrupoles in CESR and so reduce the coupling. After two iterations, the normalized aspect ratio can be reduced to about 0.015.< >

A review of optical reflector technology and its application to lighting systems for new building construction is examined. Technological advances in reflective materials, manufacturing processes, and reflector design engineering used to produce 2*4 two-lamp fixtures that exhibit impressive photometric data and have proved commercially acceptable are discussed. Application of CAD/CAM (computer-aided design and manufacturing) technology to the design of reflectors has made possible the development of reflectorized lighting fixtures that exhibit acceptable photometrics with 23% reduction in input energy. Luminaire efficiencies exceeding 80% have been measured, and acceptable lighting uniformity has been observed with spacing-to-mounting height ratios of 1.2 to 1.4. Using the zonal cavity lighting calculation method, it has been shown that a properly designed 2*4 two-lamp reflectorized luminaire provides comparable illumination characteristics to a 2*4 three-lamp system. Actual field installations are cited to verify the theoretical computations. By using the reflectorized luminaire for new construction a system input energy requirement of less than 1.5 W/ft/sup 2/ is obtained.< >

The results of a fresh look at holographic datastorage in photorefractive materials is reported. This work concludes that advances in photorefractive material, particularly SBN, AO deflector technology, CCD technology, and laser technology could make a very interesting low latency mass storage device possible. Two advances in this technology, a technique for a highly asymmetric write/read cycle and a method for building artificial crystal shcipes, are described.

Digital optics is a technology for (i) processing, (ii) transport, and (iii) storage of optical digital information. Digital optics offers both, the high temporal bandwidth known from fiber-communications, as well as the high connectivity and information density of optical imaging. Digital optical circuits may be constructed by cascading two-dimensional planar arrays of optical logic gates. The connection between these arrays is performed by light beams going through the free space above a chip. The system design and the architecture have to be adapted to optics. Some requirements for optical systems and for optical logic gates will be discussed. Digitale Optik ist eine Technologie (i) zur Verarbeitung, (ii) zum Transport und (iii) zur Speicherung optisch-digitaler Informationen. Digitale Optik bietet sowohl die hohe Zeitbandbreite, die man aus der Glasfaser-Kommunikation kennt, als auch die hohe „Konnektivität”︁ und Informationsdichte der optischen Abbildung. Digitale optische Schaltkreise können aufgebaut werden durch Kaskadieren planarer zweidimensionaler Matrizen von optisch-logischen Gattern. Die Verbindungen zwischen diesen Schaltmatrizen erfolgen durch Lichtstrahlen, die durch den freien Raum über dem Chip verlaufen.
