EEPROM (Electrically Erasable and Programmable Read Only Memory) has become an important component in many MCU applications. These applications run the spectrum from automotive to cable TV to smart credit cards. The advent of MCU's with onboard EEPROM has opened the way for innovative solutions to present day problems. Future advances in EEPROM technology will provide solutions to problems that have yet to be encountered. Before the impact of EEPROM MCU's can be assessed, however, one must consider its evolution which is outlined.

In the biomedical area there is often the clinical necessity to examine sections of the human body along directions in which an image acquisition could not be performed;to this end a set of data of the three-dimensional (3-D) representation of the organ analyzed is required. Moreover it is very important to extend to 3-D space the techniques already developed and currently used in 2-D space for analysis and information extraction purposes. In this paper the problem of the interpolation and representation of 3-D images from a small set of 2-D sections is considered first;some preliminary results of 3-D filtering of the reconstructed images are then presented by using a 3-D FIR zero-phase digital filter.

This paper looks at information storage in terms of available technologies, their functional capabilities, and the associated applications issues. There is a growing consensus in the technical community that by the end of the decade the storage density of magnetic recording will be in the range now identified with opticalstorage (200 000 bits/mm**2 or 100 million bits per square inch and above). This projection makes the current density advantage associated with optics of less importance and the understanding of storage applications and needs of even greater significance in comparing these technologies.
