An optical recording disk employing an alloy mode mechanism has been developed. The disk is a plastic substrate on which a multilayer of four thin metallic films is formed by sputtering deposition. The first and the second layers on the substrate are the recording layers of Sb//2Se//3 and Bi//2Te//3, respectively. The third is an adiabatic layer and the fourth a reflective layer. The disk is double-bonded;i. e. , two disks are bonded together with protective and adhesive layers like a sandwich. The disk is recordable on one or both sides. A laser diode is used as the optical source for reading and writing. The recording mechanism is based on multiple interference in the multilayer. When the laser beam heats the recording layers, the Sb//2Se//3 and Bi//2Te//3 form a four-element alloy by diffusion. Then the boundaries in the multilayer disappear to change the condition of initial multiple interference, which increases the reflectivity twice to four times. The disk has high sensitivity and sharp cutoff at a laser power of 0. 8nJ/ mu m**2. (Edited author abstract. )

The development of small, portable and rugged devices for detecting toxic vapors and liquids has rapidly accelerated within the last several years due to advances in microfabrication and miniaturization technology in optics and solid-state electronics. Moreover, the renewed interest in organic dyes, polymers and bioactive solid surface films has lead to their successful application as sensing materials for specific toxic compounds when they are coated onto inexpensive optical waveguide glass substrates. A brief review of the principles of total internal multiple reflection and their application to several vapor and liquid sensing devices designed and built at NRL is presented. Preliminary data characterizing these optical devices with regard to film coating response, reversibility, stability, and environmental influences are described in detail. Several recent electronic and optical design modifications have been incorporated into the prototype devices, resulting in significant electrical sensitivity and stability enhancement as well as a considerable reduction in size.

Sn-Te-Se amorphous-crystalline phase change recording film is analyzed with regard to write/erase cyclability, erasing speed, and activation energy of crystallization. The Sn-Te-Se thin film, sandwiched by two SiO//2 thin film layers, is deposited on an organic-thick-film coated glass substrate. Then, another organic thick film is coated onto these layers. For these samples, the maximum erasure (crystallization) speed by laser beam irradiation and other write/erase characteristics are measured. Information can be written and erased more than 10**6 times. The crystallization activation energy is also measured and found to be about 2. 3eV. The life of the amorphous state is estimated to be about 10 years at 40 degree C. These experimental results show that Sn-Te-Se thin film is promising as a reversible phase change recording film. The data acquisition system built for the Particle Beam Fusion Accelerator II (PBFA II) incorporates several new advanced technology features. The system has 80 new waveform recorders with a 1. 35-GHz sampling rate, 250-MHz bandwidth and 10,000 sample record length. A fast analog multiplexer is used to allow recording multiple signals on each recorder. The accelerator performance monitor system uses time-interval digitizers with a time window of plus or minus 8 ms. This long window and the pretrigger feature provide data for a thorough analysis of accelerator prefires. The calibration system automatically routes precision dc levels, sine waves, and fast-rise pulses to the waveform reorders. The waveform recording system is characterized using special multichannel, high-level simultaneous-pulse generators. The system computer has a 32-bit CPU, 350 Mb of disc storage, and a virtual memory operating system. All software is written in Fortran 77.
