We describe two possible optical implementations of the model that has been recently proposed by Hopfield to describe neural networks. The operations required for its implementation (a global linearity, and a local uniform non-linearity) are well matched to the capabilities of optical processors. The insensitivity of the Hopfield model to almost any type of implementation error, and its soft-fail property facilitates a practical optical implementation. This model provides a method for associative opticalstorage of binary data and creates the possibility for optical techniques to be applied in areas such as artifical intelligence and data flow computers. Perhaps the most obvious application of such an optical processor is in pattern recognition.

During the next 5-10 years it is likely that the bit density available in digital mass storage systems (magnetic tapes, optical and magnetic disks) will be increased to such an extent that it will greatly exceed that of the conventional photographic emulsions like IIIaJ which are used in astronomy. These developments imply that it will soon be advantageous for astronomers to use microdensitometers to completely digitize all photographic plates soon after they are developed. Distribution of digital copies of sky surveys and the contents of plate vaults will probably become feasible within ten years. Copies of other astronomical archives (e. g. , Space Telescope) could also be distributed with the same techniques. The implications for designers of future microdensitometers are: 1) there will be a continuing need for precision digitization of large-format photographic imagery, and 2) that the need for real-time analysis of the output of microdensitometers will decrease.

optical memories have been developed for very large scale data base memory systems. However, their recording density is restricted to about 10**6 bits/mm**2 by their laser light spot size. Any further increase was achieved by multiplexed recording techniques, such as holographic and photochemical hole burning. However, such techniques present many problems. We proposed a novel optical recording medium with multicolor recording layers which was shown to have a high recording density, but the reflectance readout mode for a conventional optical disk cannot apply to it directly. We discuss here an optical recording medium which has multirecording layers of an ablative DRAW optical recording medium. This medium can be applied to an ordinary readout mode. This paper describes the preparation and recording characteristics of a bi-level recording medium. The focus error signal for automatic focusing is discussed.

We are investigating several classes of versatile, all-optical, open and closed loop circuits that are based on two novel devices: a microchannel spatial light modulator (MSLM) and a laser beamlet array generator (BAG). The MSLM consists of a sandwich of photocathode material, a microchannel plate (MCP), an acceleration grid and a thin electro-optic crystal. The crystal is coated on the MCP side with a dielectric mirror and on the other side with a transparent electrode. This entire assembly is enclosed in an evacuated tube. The important and unique characteristics of the MSLM that makes it well suited for these optical circuits are its low halfwave exposure, high framing speed ( greater than 50 Hz), its level thresholding and image storage characteristics, and the ability to write and readout the device with light of the same wavelength.

Hydrogen storage and transportation methods using metal hydrides are regarded as promising as the liquid hydrogen method in future hydrogen energy systems. The authors had been studying to develop a hydrogen storage and transportation technique based on the use of metal hydrides as part of researches for hydrogen energy technology. On the basis of the results of basic experiments and studies conducted so far, hydrogen storage vessel using 1,000 kg metal hydride (LR) Ni//4//. //8Al//0//. //2) were manufactured and put to tests, from which data necessary for future hydrogen storage and transportation systems in handling large amounts of metal hydrides and hydrogen were obtained.
