Small amounts of logic, closely commingled with memory, provide a basic computing element which can be replicated and joined with simple, local interconnection topologies to form a logic-enhanced memory (LEM). An algorithm which performs cross-target rejection for a radar system can be implemented in a LEM architecture using some 10,000 elements. As circuit fabrication technologyadvances, permitting more elements, 100,000 elements can be used to perform cross-target rejection and precision tracking, with no changes to the elements themselves or their interconnection topology.

The unique performance characteristics of a new class of laser recording media which has been given the tradename DREXON are discussed. These characteristics permit the design of opticaldatastorage products and systems incorporating modern laser technology. Special features of the media enable prerecording of control markings and replication of discs for large-scale distribution of data. The principal types of potential applications for this media are categorized and several are discussed. Additionally, the technical and economic performance of the DREXON optical memory is compared to that of magnetic discs, magnetic tape, and COM microfiche.

Recent advances have been made in magnetic tape recording technology by making use of a microprocessor to control the servo routines of a low cost half-inch magnetic tape transport. The microprocessor has also been programmed to extend the self-diagnostic capability of the transport, to exercise overall control of input/output commands and to provide status information. In addition, the versatility of the in-built microprocessor is made use of during production testing to simplify the test procedures for many analog circuits.
