The advances in the design and fabrication,of optoelectronic components such as microlaser arrays, photodetectors and free-space optical interconnection elements have driven the creation of ever more ambitious demonstrator systems. In this paper, the progress made to date on two separate demonstrator project, which have been under investigation at Heriot-Watt University, will be reviewed. A description of some of the enabling technologies used in the creation of these systems will be provided and the potential for scaling the architectures described up to sizes where the computational advantages of the optics-in-computing paradigm become highly attractive will be outlined.

Most organizations usually have large archives of paper documents that they maintain. These archives typically contain valuable information and data, which are imaged to provide electronic access. However, once a document is either printed or imaged, these organizations had no efficient method of retrieving information from these documents. The only methods available to retrieve information from them were to either manually read them or to convert them to ASCII text using optical character recognition (OCR). For most of the archives with large numbers of documents, these methods are problematic. Manual searches are not feasible. OCR, on the other hand, can be CPU intensive and prone to error. In addition, for many foreign languages, OCR engines do not exist. By contrast, our system provides an innovative approach to the problem of retrieving information from imaged document archives utilizing a client/server architecture. Since its beginning in 1999, we have made significant advances in the development of a system that employs optical correlation (OC) technology (either software or hardware) to access directly the textual and graphic information contained in imaged paper documents therefore eliminating the OCR process. It provides a fast, accurate means of accessing this information directly from multilingual documents. In addition, our system can also rapidly and accurately detect the presence of duplicate documents within an archive using optical correlation techniques. In this paper, we describe the present system and selected examples of its capabilities. We also present some performance results (accuracy, speed, etc.) against test document sets.

optical information processing techniques offer many advantages for data security applications. Optics offers many degrees of freedom like phase, spatial frequency, and polarization to encode data more securely. Being inherently two-dimensional, optical systems can process and relay two-dimensional information in parallel resulting in higher throughput rate compared to the electronic systems. The above advantages offered by optical information processing systems, coupled with advancements in enabling technologies like photorefractive crystals, spatial light modulators, charge coupled device cameras, and smart pixel technology have led to an increasing use of optoelectronic data processing techniques for security applications. Holographic memories that use photorefractive materials are attractive due to their high-density storage capacity, high-speed access to data, and rewritability. Thus photorefractive materials can be used for secured data storage and retrieval. Encrypted memory can be used in a secure communication network using ultrashort pulses. Encryption of amplitude and phase images, and storage of the subsequent encrypted image in photorefractive material has been achieved by various researchers. The present paper reviews various optical encryption techniques developed by us, based on photorefractive crystals. These techniques include double random encoding, fractional Fourier plane encoding, and fully phase encoding.

Multimodal interfaces provide flexible, intuitive, and error-robust interaction with complex information systems. In this work we describe an innovative statistical approach for combining multimodal user input that is based on principles adopted from evolution theory. A population of individuals, each representing a solution to the integration problem, compete for an optimal interpretation of the user interactions. Specially designed genetic operators recombine various characteristics of these solutions. The fitness of a single individual, measuring the certainty and the confidence of an integration result, is calculated according to a weighted scheme including the various information resources and the current system context. Our integration algorithm works extremely robust. Moreover, it can easily be scaled up to additional input devices and various application domains.

Nowadays, in order to take advantage of fiber optic bandwidth, any optical communications system tends to be WDM. The way to extract a channel, characterized by a wavelength, from the optical fiber is to filter the specific wavelength. This gives the systems a low degree of freedom due to the fact of the static character of most of the employed devices. In this paper we will present a different way to extract channels from an optical fiber with WDM transmission. The employed method is based on an optically Programmable Logic Cells (OPLC) previously published by us, for other applications as a chaotic generator or as basic element for optical computing. In this paper we will describe the configuration of the OPLC to be employed as a dropping device. It acts as a filter because it will extract the data carried by a concrete wavelength. It does depend, internally, on the wavelength. We will show how the intensity of the signal is able to select the chosen information from the line. It will be also demonstrated that a new idea of redundant information it is the way of selecting the concrete wavelength. As a matter of fact this idea is apparently the only way to use the OPLC as a dropping device. Moreover, based on these concepts, a similar way to route signals to different routes is reported. The basis is the use of photonic switching configurations, namely Batcher or Bayan structures, where the unit switching cells are the above indicated OPLCs.

During the last decades the research in the sensor fusion area has mainly been focused on fusion methods and feature selection methods. A possible further development in this area is to incorporate a process referred to as active perception. This means that the system is able to manipulate the sensing mechanisms to create a focus on selected information in the surrounding environment. This process may also be able to handle the feature selection process with respect to which features to be used and/or the number of features to use. This paper presents a model that contains a decision system based on active perception integrated with previous sensor fusion algorithms. The human body has perhaps one of the most advanced perceptual processing systems. The human perception process can be divided into sensation (measurement collection) and perception (interpret the surroundings). During the sensation process a huge amount of data is collected from different sensors that reflect the environment. The information has to be interpreted in an effective way, i.e. in the fusion process. The interpretation together with a decision system to control the sensors to focus on important information will correspond to the (active) perception process. The model presented in this paper capitalizes on the properties presented by the biological counterpart to achieve more human-like processes for a sensor fusion. Finally, the paper presents the testing of the model in two examples. The applications used have a safety approach of fire indication, identification and decision-making. The goal is to enlarge a conventional fire alarm system to not only detect fire, but also to propose different actions for a human in a dangerous area for example.

Principles of formation and controlled propagation of switching autowaves in optically bistable interference structures are considered. On this basis methods and devices are developed for read-in, storing, read-out, switching and transfer of information light signals in the plane of 2D-arrays of nonlinear optical elements of micron size. A peculiarity of these methods is the possibility to shift data laterally in the an-ay's plane in a direction that is perpendicular to the direction of incident light beams without its interim transformation into electrical signals. This distinctive feature enables developing new architecture concepts of optical information processing systems, Examples of numerical simulations and experimental realisations are presented of optical digital devices with a wide range of functional applications such as Boolean logic elements, shift registers, multiplexers/demultiplexers, basic planar ring processors, etc. The limiting operation parameters of the above devices are discussed.

The paper provides a novel algorithm for face rendering applications. Ensuring algorithms of low complexity to render virtual humans in VLBR networks is at the heart of our new facial rendering system. The system differs from others such as parametric animation models and interpolation solutions. The novelties include a dual segment growing algorithm and a heat diffusion rendering method. The extracting process takes into account information both in gradient domain and topographic feature. And segments are used to carry this information, which greatly reduces the transmitted packet size. Face rendering is based on this segment and is carried out like a heat diffusive process. Experimental results, as reported in following, prove this proposed system to be an efficient one. Furthermore this scheme can be extended to deal with more general video or image analysis and synthesis systems.

The human brain fuses information from a variety of modalities to locate, track, and identify targets. Vision-based tracking, which uses a 2D signal, is able to accurately identify and locate objects, however it requires more processing time than 1-D auditory systems. Auditory systems can locate and identify objects based on interaural time difference (ITD) and interaural intensity difference (IID) fusion. In order to investigate the advantages of a neurophysiology-based fusion model, we seek to localize a target from a 1-D signals analysis conducted over repeated measurements where a user is allowed move sensors. Similar to the human fusing auditory information from the ears, we seek to fuse information over time and space from two sensors monitoring a single target. Through spatiotemporal fusion from the 1-D analysis, we show how ITD and IID fusion functions support a Level 5 User Refinement task.
