In this paper based on the advantages of both optical transmission and electronic computation, we first provide an O(log log N) bus cycles parallel algorithm for the medial axis transform of an N×N binary image on a linear array with a reconfigurable pipelined bus system using N2 processors. By increasing the number of processors, the proposed algorithm can be modified to run in O(log logq N) and O(1) bus cycles using qN2 and N/sup 2+1/isin// processors respectively, where 1les/qles/√N, isin/ is a constant and isin/≥1. These results improve on previously known algorithms developed on various parallel computation models. This paper presents an overview of our study on the subject that we categorically termed "VLSI (very large scale integration) microphotonics". We examine the scientific and technological issues and challenges concerning three essential steps in this technology: miniaturization, interconnection, and integration of microphotonic devices, circuits and systems in micron or submicron scale. In miniaturization, the issues on the size effect, proximity effect, energy confinement effect, microcavitiy effect, single photon effect, optical interference effect, high field effect, nonlinear effect, noise effect, quantum optical effect, and chaotic noise effect should be addressed. In interconnection, the issues of connecting identical devices (homogeneous interconnection) or non-identical devices (heterogeneous interconnection) have to be examined. optical alignment between micron-scale devices, minimizing interconnection losses, and maintaining optical modes between devices, are to be considered. In integration, the issues of interfacing same kind of devices, two different kinds of devices, and several or many different kinds of devices have to be addressed. Other issues include the design and packaging of the integrated devices and circuits as a system for reliable function and operation. In the course of this study, we closely follow the experiences of "VLSI microelectronics" so that they can provide lessons, learnings, and insights that microphotonics can benefit from. Similarities, dissimilarities, advantages, and disadvantages of the two technologies are explored in such a way that they can be more effectively utilized by mutual support and complement. Directions for future studies are also discussed.

With the advent of flip-chips, internal debug tools need to image the active regions of devices through their silicon substrates. Infrared (IR) optics can "see" through silicon, but accurate navigation to a particular node is challenged because IR resolution is often lower than the feature size to be probed. To meet this accuracy requirement, we have developed an automated sub-resolution alignment of a device's computer-aided design (CAD) to its through silicon IR image. Automated image alignment is not straightforward because CAD and IR images differ significantly in magnification, rotation, intensity, and resolution, causing standard alignment algorithms to fail. The light diffraction of the optical system blurs and distorts the shape and size of features, causing both edge-based and intensity-based cross-correlation techniques to fail. The alignment methodology we present, consists of pre-processing (equalization) of the two images, followed by sub-resolution offset computation along with x-y confidence factors. We apply a modeled point spread function (PSF) of the optical system to the CAD image to increase its resemblance to the optical image. The application of the PSF is important in resolution-equalization, and becomes critical if "ghosting" is present in the optical image. Using our alignment algorithm which combines image equalization, over-sampling, and cross-correlation, we demonstrate the ability to achieve 0.1 mum placement accuracy with a 1 mum resolution optical system.

It is difficult to achieve restoration of high frequency information by the traditional algorithms using an undersampled and degraded low-resolution image. Nonlinear algorithms provide a better solution to above problem. As a nonlinear and real-time processing method, a MLP neural network super-resolution restoration for the undersampled and degraded low-resolution image is proposed. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed approach can achieve super-resolution and a good restored image.

Absolute optical angle sensor is described that is an essentially digital opto-electronic device. Its purpose is to resolve the relative and absolute angle position of coded disk using Pseudo-random-code and Triangle-code. In this technique, the angular position of disk is determined in "coarse" sense first by pseudo-random code. A further "fine" angular position data based on pixel count is obtained by Triangle-code which result 0.006(degrees)resolution of the system provided that 7 mum line image sensor are used. The proposed technique is novel in a number of aspects, such that it has the non-contact reflective nature, high resolution of the system, relatively simple code pattern, and inherent digital nature of the sensor. And what is more the system can be easily modified to torque sensor by applying two coded disks in a manner that observe the difference in absolute angular displacement. The digital opto-electronic nature of the proposed sensor, along with its reporting of both torque and angle, makes the system ideal for use in intelligent vehicle systems. In this communication, we propose a technique that utilizes pseudo-random-code and triangle-code to determine accurate angular position of coded disk. We present the experimental results to demonstrate the validity of the idea.

A physical characterization for different modem digital detectors (transparent imaging plate, CsI flat panel detector) as well as of an analogue screen-film system, a selenium based system and a "normal" CR system are presented. The detectable information in radiographs produced with digital systems is strongly dependent on the image processing used. The effect of an optimization of this processing corresponding to the physical parameters of different detectors was evaluated. To do so, VGA(1,2) and MS-ROC3 have been used. All optimizations led to "better" images concerning the information content which can be used by the radiologist. For the flat-panel detector it led to a reduction of images which must be manually postprocessed and even of repeated radiographs. This was achieved by using an adaptive autowindow algorithm which is able to distinguish between anatomical structures and implants. For another detector the detection of unsharp lung nodules could be improved by far. information can not be added by image processing, it is only possible to make it better visible. To do so, the optimizing of the processing for each kind of detector is much more important than an optimization concerning different organ programs.

Nowadays, since most information is transmitted by public medias, the security of information is very important, especially of confidential information. The information security system has its particular processing method. The use of cryptographic machine is one of the effective solutions. The hidden trouble of cryptographic machine mainly comes from information processing kernel program and key chip. And in China, information security is being menaced, for most of the key chip involving the information security devices come from abroad. Developing the key chip-set for information security system is a hard and chief task for China. A research on system-level architecture of single-chip cryptographic data processing is presented. The architecture involves microprocessor core architecture, data interface, user ID interface, special component for cryptographic data processing and cryptographic algorithms RSA and CHES VLSI implementation IP module and the true random number generator. All of the functions are necessary for the system on a single cryptographic data processing chip. The architecture, including microprocessor core architecture, is incompatible with any other system, and has a special function to accelerate cryptographic data processing, so it is a very effective way to implement information security chip. © 2002 IEEE.

In this paper, we have studied the performance of an optical wireless CDMA systems using four receiver designs-optical correlator, optical correlator with single optical hard limiter (OHL), optical correlator with double OHL and the chip level receiver. These - receiver designs have been previously proposed in a fiber optic environment and use mainly optical components with minimum electronic processing. optical Orthogonal codes (OOC) are used as signature sequences. The information data is modulated by using an On-Off keying (OOK) modulation scheme and the ambient light noise is modelled as Additive White Gaussian noise (AWGN). The performance of various receivers are then evaluated by using Monte Carlo simulation. We found that at a lower SNR the optical correlator has the best performance, while at a higher SNR, the other three receivers gave a better performance.

Correlation engines have been evolving since the implementation of radar. Here, correlation refers to association, which in this context is track-to-track association. In modem sensor fusion architectures, correlation and sensor registration are required to produce common, continuous, and unambiguous tracks of all objects in the surveillance area [1]. The objective is to provide a unified picture of the theatre or area of interest to battlefield decision makers. This unified picture has many names, but is most commonly referred to as a Single Integrated Picture (SIP). A related process, known as sensor registration or gridlock filtering (gridlocking), refers to the reduction in navigation errors and sensor misalignment errors so that one sensor's track data can be accurately transformed into another sensor's coordinate system. As platforms gain multiple sensors, the correlation and gridlocking of tracks become significantly more difficult. Current correlation technology revolves around likelihood ratio theory and the assignment algorithm to resolve association ambiguities. While a Bayes classifier is the best classifier, all classifiers potentially lead to classification errors. The performance, with respect to misclassification, is usually expressed via the operating characteristic curve. When the observed feature vector has a high dimension, finding the class densities can be difficult. Even if these densities are available, we should remember that no classifier can perform perfectly when the class distributions overlap. Sensor registration is typically accomplished with some type of least-squares algorithm, such as the Kalman filtering technique, which attempts to locate the best bias error vector estimate from a set of associated/fused track pairs. In this paper, we examine the track association and sensor registration problem in terms of several correlation classifiers, the most famous of these being the matched filter. To visualize, manipulate and analyze the geometrical structure of anatomical changes, it is often required to perform three-dimensional (3-D) interpolation of the interested organ shape from a series of cross-sectional images obtained from various imaging modalities, such as ultrasound, computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), etc. In this paper, a novel wavelet-based interpolation scheme, which consists of four algorithms are proposed to 3-D image reconstruction. The multi-resolution characteristics of wavelet transform (WT) is completely used in this approach, which consists of two stages, boundary extraction and contour interpolation. More specifically, a wavelet-based radial search method is first designed to extract the boundary of the target object. Next. the global information of the extracted boundary is analyzed for interpolation using WT with various bases and sacs. By using six performance measures to evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed scheme, experimental results show that the performance of all proposed algorithms is superior to traditional contour-based methods, linear interpolation and B-spline interpolation. The satisfactory outcome of the proposed scheme provides its capability for serving as an essential part of image processing system developed for medical applications.
