Power quality disturbances are normally recorded by dedicated PQ monitors as sampled points in time. Magnitude is accepted as a significant detection and general classification index in field devices or later assessment analysis. Suitable methods of magnitude characterization are one of the bases of PQD measuring and monitoring. The magnitude of PQD can be determined in several different ways. The RMS voltage, peak voltage and fundamental voltage component are introduced to quantify the voltage severity levels in number of published standards. The paper presents the algorithms of the mentioned approaches implemented in Matlab for quasi real-time situation. The algorithms are FFT-based and/or wavelet transform based. They are validated with the example of the radial test system field voltage sag waveforms provided by IEEE. The depth-duration characterization of voltage sags is illustrated with the mentioned different approaches. The most appropriate approach is suggested at the end of the paper according to the practical monitoring or measuring requirements. We develop a new PQ monitor with DSP chip infrastructure where all the methods are applied. The monitors will be installed in field in the coming July. The proper window length selection and technique to avoid oscillation is also discussed in the rest part of the paper. The descriptive information obtained from the magnitude characterization can be used further to extract features for PQD detection and classification.

Wireless communications are rapidly becoming the means of data and information transfer for a broad range of applications. As wireless communication applications continue to expand, the information transfer rates are evolving toward the Gigabit per second data rate and, for some applications, there is even a need for terabit per second data rate transfer in the wireless network. In addition, wireless terminals often require instantaneous switching and communications between network members. For most applications directional antennas are needed to support the high data throughput requirements, and phased array antennas are the only high gain, directional antennas that can be rapidly switched to provide instantaneous communications among network members scattered geographically. Wireless terminal equipment is currently designed to operate in the 1 to 60 GHz frequency range and, traditionally, these equipment are designed with RF hardware. More recently, optics technology has been demonstrated to play an important role in RF systems as the True-Time-Delay in the phased array antenna, and, for some systems operating at high data rates, optical interconnects at the baseband level require E-O and O-E conversions. This paper discusses the considerations in using optics technology in the design of the wireless terminal network including optical signal processing, optical backplanes, optical networking, optical interconnects, and optical components. This paper also describes the architecture of an RF wireless communications network using a range of optical technologies.

Time varying simulations are common in many scientific domains to study the evolution of phenomena or features. The data produced in these simulations is massive. Instead of just one dataset of 512(3) or 1024(3) (for regular gridded simulations) there could now be hundreds to thousands of timesteps. For datasets with evolving features, feature analysis and visualization tools are crucial to help interpret all the information. For example, it is usually important to know how many regions are evolving, what are their lifetimes, do they merge with others, how does the volume/mass change, etc. Therefore, feature based approaches, such as feature tracking and feature quantification are needed to follow identified regions over time. In our previous work, we have developed a methodology for analyzing time-varying datasets which tracks 3D amorphous features as they evolve in time. However, the implementation is for single-processor non-adaptive grids and for massive multiresolution datasets this approach needs to be distributed and enhanced. In this paper, we describe extensions to our feature extraction and tracking methodology for distributed AMR simulations. Two different paradigms are described, a "fully distributed" and a "partial-merge" strategy. The benefits and implementations of both are discussed.

This paper presents a segmentation algorithm for image processing, which is able to distinguish the background's area from the object's area based only on their texture characteristics. The main goal is to develop a segmentation algorithm which does not need any prior information about the object (form, colours, textures, brightness etc.) and which is also robust against industrial conditions (such as shadow effects and electromagnetic noise). The developed solution is based on a predefined and structured background (with a specific frequency in the grey values). The background frequency is compared with the object's texture frequency using a Fourier analysis together with a classification algorithm. Two different types of classification algorithms have been applied: statistical covariance analysis and Neural Networks. The algorithm has been evaluated using real textile images under distinct conditions showing a very appropriated result with a segmentation error smaller than 0,5% in the average. The paper finishes with a set of conclusions and perspectives for future works.

Coatings damage in shipboard tanks is presently assessed using "Certified Coatings Inspectors". Prior to a coatings inspector entering a tank, the tank must be emptied and certified "gas free". These requirements combined with the limited number of certified coatings inspectors available at shipyards and Naval Bases significantly increases the cost and the logistical requirements associated with performing shipboard tank inspections. There is additionally significant variation in damage assessments made by different inspectors. To overcome these difficulties, the Naval Research Laboratory has developed two video inspection systems that obviate requirements for both certifying tanks gas free and for emptying the tank prior to performing an inspection. These systems also obviate requirements for inspector presence during tank inspections. The Naval Research Laboratory has also developed an automatic corrosion detection algorithm. The corrosion detection algorithm currently employs two independent algorithms that individually assess the tank coatings damage. The independent damage assessments are than fused to attain a single coatings damage value. In testing performed to date, it has been shown that the corrosion detection algorithm significantly reduces the effect of inspector-to-inspector variability and provides an accurate assessment of tank coatings damage. This in turn makes it significantly easier to prioritize ship maintenance.

A review of semiconductor-based schemes for the implementation of quantum information processing devices is presented. After recalling the fundamentals of quantum information/computation theory, we shall discuss two potential implementation schemes based on charge degrees of freedom in semiconductor nanostructures. More specifically, we shall present an all-optical implementation of quantum information processing with semiconductor macroatoms/molecules. In this case the computational degrees of freedom are interband optical transitions driven by ultrafast sequences of multicolor laser-pulse trains. As alternative approach, we shall also discuss a transport-like scheme based on ballistic electrons in coupled semiconductor quantum wires. Within such implementation strategy, we shall finally propose a relatively simple quantum gating sequence for testing Bell inequality violations in a condensed-matter environment.

This research evaluates the objectivity of textile goods by using the non-contact three dimensional measuring method. The object of the measurement is a seam and wrinkle of the shirt. The evaluation of textile goods was due to watching, and it was difficult to do an absolute evaluation. The existing three-dimensional measurement device is made to correspond to textile goods, and we convert into the series to which ruggedness information is decided by ISO and can output it. The measurement device uses the pattern projection method which introduces the phase shift, and can do high density measurement in a short time. Technical paper of ISO is made for this measurement device, and the work of standardization is proceeded.

Goodrich Corporation, optical and Space systems Division, Electro-optical systems has developed a Rad-Hard, Survivable Earth Sensor targeted for a range of spacecraft missions. The Multi-Mission Sensor (MMS) design employs a thermopile array fabricated with MEMS technology. This MEMS array provides the basis for a high accuracy, high reliability static earth sensor, with the added benefit of off-axis capability and performance with the sun and/or moon in the field of view. Because the array itself is inherently radiation hard, the sensor element is not subject to degradation due to proton fluence, as is the case with traditional CCD devices. The design is also tolerable of laser weapon threats and compatible with electro-magnetic environments. The earth sensor outputs digitized detector signals to be used with spacecraft algorithms for attitude calculation. While the MMS design has been optimized for GEO applications, the same baseline sensor provides information for attitude determination at LEO and MEO, where Van Allen belt proton radiation levels pose significant challenges for traditional and stellar sensors. The detector layout can be optimized to provide enhanced performance at MEO and LEO. This paper presents performance estimates for LEO, MEO and GEO mission and discusses other error source performance predictions relative to Instrument Error, End-of-life Degradation including radiation, and Earth Radiance Error.

To meet the computational requirements of mid-range and high-end programmable ultrasound systems, multiple processors are currently required. algorithms optimized specifically for a single processor-based system may not perform well in a multiprocessor environment. They need to be efficiently remapped on multiple processors to take advantage of the increased computing power while minimizing the interprocessor data transfer and the latency between data acquisition and display. In this, paper, we describe a multiprocessor-based implementation of scan conversion, a key processing task in an ultrasound system that geometrically transforms the acquired polar ultrasound data to Cartesian coordinates for display. The single processor-based scan conversion algorithm that was reported previously uses inverse mapping for geometric transformation, where the pixel values in the Cartesian display are determined from data in the polar domain. Inverse mapping requires access to a full frame of pre-scan-converted ultrasound data, which in a multiprocessor system can be located across multiple processors, thus requiring a significant amount of interprocessor data communications. Our modified scan conversion algorithm reduces the data movement by performing inverse-mapped scan conversion locally on the polar-domain data present in each processor's memory. Each processor handles a smaller amount of data, thus reducing the latency. The raster pixels generated by each processor are combined later. Interprocessor synchronization is used to ensure that each processor displays data belonging to the same frame. Data overlapping between processors avoids boundary artifacts between regions that are processed on different processors. Using four Hitachi/Equator Technologies' 300-MHz MAP-CA processors, scan conversion requires 5.6 ms for a 600x420 RGB frame, as compared to 14.6 ms using a single processor, and the latency is reduced by 33.3%. optical engineers will need to know progressively more about quantum optics as they move into fields like quantum cryptography, quantum computing, and quantum teleportation. Intuition based in classical optics can sometimes serve the system designer well, but in some cases classical intuition conflicts with quantum-regime fact. This paper provides an introductory review to certain important aspects of quantum optics, such as the particle-wave duality of photons, field quantization, quantum states of radiation, particularly as they relate to the first- and second-order correlation processes that are important in distinguishing the quantum regime of light from the classical regime. It also presents the results of two preliminary quantum-regime analyses of devices important in the engineering of information processing systems that operate at the individual photon level, the electro-optic modulator and the acousto-optic modulator.
