This paper presents an efficient implementation of a VLSI high speed parallel multiplier using the Radix_4 modified Booth algorithm and the Wallace Tree structure The design is structured for a n x in multiplication where n can reach up to 126 bits. The Wallace Tree structure serves to compress the partial product term by a ratio of 3:2 111 To enhance the speed of operation, carry-look-ahead(CLA) adders are used which is independent on the number of bits of the two operands[2]. An efficient VHDL code was written and successfully simulated and synthesised using Altera's MaxplusII(10.0) and ModelSim3.4 CAD tools.

The Naval Oceanographic Office (NAVOCEANO) has continued to develop new capabilities in the area of near-real-time synoptic ocean observation. In the last year, the Navy has developed the ability to acquire and process near-real-time ocean color data. This has made possible the generation of satellite optical products that can be used for Naval fleet support. In this paper, we will present recent and near-future improvements in the areas of new data types, new products and product algorithms, atmospheric corrections, sensor calibrations, cloud masking techniques, validation issues, and timeliness of the data. We will also present the evolving method that NAVOCEANO is utilizing to acquire and process ocean color data. Present optical products available for Naval fleet support include diver visibility for fleet and diver guidance, attenuation fields for laser systems performance assessment, and turbidity and front/eddy information for physical circulation model performance assessments.

optical coherence tomography (OCT) provides a non-contact and non-invasive means to visualize the corneal anatomy at micron scale resolution. We obtained corneal images from an arc-scanning (converging) OCT system operating at a wavelength of 830nm and a fan-shaped-scanning high-speed OCT system with an operating wavelength of 1310nm. Different scan protocols (arc/fan) and data acquisition rates, as well as wavelength dependent bio-tissue backscatter contrast and optical absorption, make the images acquired using the two systems different. We developed image-processing algorithms to automatically detect the air-tear interface, epithelium-Bowman's layer interface, laser in-situ keratomileusis (LASIK) flap interface, and the cornea-aqueous interface in both kinds of images. The overall segmentation scheme for 830nm and 1310nm OCT images was similar, although different strategies were adopted for specific processing approaches. Ultrasound pachymetry measurements of the corneal thickness and Placido-ring based corneal topography measurements of the corneal curvature were made on the same day as the OCT examination. Anterior/posterior corneal surface curvature measurement with OCT was also investigated. Results showed that automated segmentation of OCT images could evaluate anatomic outcome of LASIK surgery.

The creation of radiology,teaching modules has historically required manual offline authoring. Our system can integrate with commercial PACS to allow clinicians to author teaching modules at their clinical PACS workstations without further manual input. Our system provides a DICOM interface and an automated teaching file database. We tested our system with the PACS deployed at our institution (GE Medical systems, Milwaukee, Wl). We used a networked Windows workstation (Microsoft, Redmond, WA) running SQL Server 2000, registered on our PACS system as a DICOM receiver. Teaching files were created at clinical workstations and any desired annotation and cataloguing instructions were added using standard annotation tools. The files were pushed using DICOM network transfer. Anonymizing, annotation and cataloguing were done automatically using DICOM header information. Additional information from our HIS/RIS system was transmitted using private DICOM header fields. Teaching files were then added to the web - accessible teaching module database. We present a system that integrates the creation of teaching files into the daily clinical workflow, allowing clinicians to immediately publish interesting cases from their clinical workstation. Our system uses standard protocols and requires minimal configuration to integrate with existing PACS systems, enabling a low-cost, expandable and vendor independent solution.

The total cavopulmonary connection (TCPC) is a palliative surgical repair performed on children with a single ventricle (SV) physiology. Much of the power produced by the resultant single ventricle pump is consumed in the systemic circulation. Consequently the minimization of power loss in the TCPC is imperative for optimal surgical outcome. Toward this end we have developed a method of vascular morphology reconstruction based on adaptive control grid interpolation (ACGI) to function as a precursor to computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis aimed at quantifying power loss. Our technique combines positive aspects of optical flow-based and block-based motion estimation algorithms to accurately augment insufficiently dense Magnetic Resonance (MR) data sets with a minimal degree of computational complexity. The resulting enhanced data sets are used to reconstruct vascular geometries, and the subsequent reconstructions can then be used in conjunction with CFD simulations to offer the pressure and velocity information necessary to quantify power loss in the TCPC. Collectively these steps form a tool that transforms conventional MR data into more powerful information allowing surgical planning aimed at producing optimal TCPC configurations for successful surgical outcomes.

Digital mammography creates very large images, which require new approaches to storage, retrieval, management. and security. The National Digital Mammography Archive (NDMA) project, funded by the National Library of Medicine (NLM), is developing a limited testbed that demonstrates the feasibility of a national breast imaging archive. with access to prior exams;patient information;computer aids for image processing, teaching and testing tools;and security components to ensure confidentiality of patient information. There will be significant benefits to patients and clinicians in terms of accessible data with which to make a diagnosis, and to researchers performing studies on breast cancer. Mammography was chosen for the project, because standards were already available for digital images, report formats and structures. New standards have been created for communications protocols between devices, front-end portal and archive. NDMA is a distributed computing concept that provides for sharing and access across corporate entities. Privacy, auditing, and patient consent are all integrated into the system. Five sites', Universities of Pennsylvania., Chicago, North Carolina and Toronto, and BWXT Y12, are connected through high-speed networks to demonstrate functionality. We will review progress, including technical challenges. innovative research and development activities. standards and protocols being implemented, and potential benefits to healthcare systems.

In large networks, maintaining precise global network state information is almost impossible. Many factors, such as non-negligible propagation delay, infrequent state updates due to overhead concerns, and hierarchical topology aggregation, can affect the precision of the global network state information. In this paper we investigate the impact of imprecise state information on the performance of dynamic routing and wavelength assignment (RWA) algorithms. We consider single fiber and multi-fiber systems and study dynamic routing with three wavelength selection schemes, namely first-fit, random-fit, and most-used. The results show that the precision of global network state information greatly affects the performance of the dynamic RWA schemes. In particular, some RWA algorithms that are traditionally considered as effective algorithms perform poorly in the presence of imprecise global network state information. This indicates that more practical RWA algorithms that can tolerate imprecise state information may need to be developed for large scale optical networks. The results also show that networks with wavelength conversion capability and multi-fiber systems are less sensitive to the imprecise state information.

SPEECON (Speech-Driven Interfaces for Consumer devices) is a project which aims to develop voice-driven interfaces for consumer applications. Led by an industrial consortium, the project's goal is to collect speech data for at least 20 languages and 600 speakers per language (mostly adults but children as well). Recorded in different environments which are expected to be representative for the future applications, the database corpus comprises both spontaneous and read speech, the latter including phonetically rich material, a large number of application commands and isolated items such as digits, names, etc. In order to safeguard consistency and high quality of the databases, all of them are subject to validation. This paper describes in detail the specifications of the databases as well as the validation procedure.

We propose an alternating minimization (AM) image estimation algorithm for iteratively reconstructing transmission tomography images. The algorithm is based on a model that accounts for much of the underlying physics, including Poisson noise in the measured data, beam hardening of polyenergetic radiation, energy dependence of the attenuation coefficients and scatter. It is well-known that these nonlinear phenomena can cause severe artifacts throughout the image when high-density objects are present in soft tissue, especially when using the conventional technique of filtered back projection (FBP). If we assume no prior knowledge of the high-density object(s), our proposed algorithm yields much improved images in comparison to FBP, but retains significant streaking between the high-density regions. When we incorporate the knowledge of the attenuation and pose parameters of the high-density objects into the algorithm, our simulations yield images with greatly reduced artifacts. To accomplish this, we adapted the algorithm to perform a search at each iteration (or after every n iterations) to find the optimal pose of the object before updating the image. The final iteration returns pose values within 0.1 millimeters and 0.01 degrees of the actual location of the high-density structures.

We analyze the quality of reconstructions obtained when using the multi-frame blind deconvolution (MFBD) algorithm and the bispectrum algorithm to reconstruct images from atmospherically-degraded data that are corrupted by detector noise. In particular, the quality of reconstructions is analyzed in terms of the fidelity of the estimated Fourier phase spectra. Both the biases and the mean square phase errors of the Fourier spectra estimates are calculated and analyzed. The reason that the comparison is made by looking at the Fourier phase spectra is because both the MFBD and bispectrum algorithms can estimate Fourier phase information from the image data itself without requiring knowledge of the system transfer function, and because Fourier phase plays a dominant role in image quality. Computer-simulated data is used for the comparison in order to be able to calculate true biases and mean square errors in the estimated Fourier phase spectra. For the parameters in this study, the bispectrum algorithm produced less-biased phase estimates in all cases than the MFBD algorithm. The MFBD algorithm produced mean square phase errors comparable to or lower than the bispectrum algorithm for good seeing and few data frames, while the converse is true for many data frames and poor seeing.
