Three-dimensional models are important products of measurement systems in a variety of applications such as archaeology, medicine, architecture and engineering. In order to be appropriate to the end user, such object models must comply with certain accuracy standards. To achieve both accuracy and object coverage with a close range photogrammetric approach often requires a convergent image network in combination with retro reflective targets or some form of projected pattern. Retro-reflective targets alone can only provide sparse data. However, by optimising image acquisition to record both targets and natural surface texture information, proven high accuracy retro reflective target image measurement can be combined with a wealth of automated image analysis algorithms developed by both photogrammetric and machine vision communities. This research is focused on combining photogrammetric and machine vision measurement techniques, through an automated model generation tool based upon dynamic Delaunay triangulation. The model is initialised by a sparse set of retro reflective targets, which form a Delaunay triangulation network known both in image and object space. The original triangles are densified by a multi-image approach, which uses both the image geometry information (through constrained epipolar lines) as well as radiometric properties (patch matching) within relevant triangles. The triangle network is further constrained by edge boundary information to follow the surface of individual objects in the imaged scene. Each set of points produced at various stages of the process is tagged with a unique flag that corresponds to a level of accuracy, determined either through multi-photo intersection or in a more general case through bundle adjustment.

This paper describes an assortment of techniques and a system to adapt multimedia content. The ability to do so allows service providers to offer a wide range of multimedia services to users with various client capabilities. We present a system that is capable of serving a variety of client devices. To do so, we propose novel transcoding and video summarization algorithms. Additionally, we describe a system that invokes these algorithms dynamically as a function of the network, terminal and user information. The impact on the consumer is the added functionality that can be realized and the quality of their service.

The increase in performance of electronic computing systems may not be sustained in the face of interconnection bandwidth limitations. The potential of optics to overcome these limitations is discussed, with particular emphasis on planar optical packaging of free-space optics. Planar optics offers free-space optical functionality implemented with industry-standard manufacturing techniques. Our current research into applications of planar optics in digital communication and processing networks is presented.

We first briefly describe the photorefractive effect. The band transport model is introduced to analyze the processes involved in the photo-induced index variation. This is followed by a more detailed analysis of the dynamics of grating formation. We then describe the interaction between electromagnetic waves propagating inside photorefractive media. Nonlinear optical processes including two-wave mixing, four-wave mixing and phase conjugation are discussed. We also point out some fundamental properties of grating diffraction. Then we discuss the applications of the photorefractive effect in information systems, including information storage, processing, modulation, and transmission. In the discussion of applications, we will focus on data storage and fiber optic devices.

For pt.I see ibid., p.129-34 (2001).The article describes the software portion of the research work that developed a prototype portable device for optically scanning embossed Braille and conversion of the scanned text to binary Braille representation. An application to convert the literary Braille code to expanded text has also been implemented. The system developed utilises a hand held scanner that captures the embossed Braille image in real time via a linear 128-pixel CCD array. A Texas Instruments Digital Signal Processor performs recognition processing.

Implementation of wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) in optical networks increased the fiber bandwidth utilization and emerged from the use in point-to-point applications to its current position as the next optical networking technology. There are, as well, other competing network approaches, such as optical time division multiplexing (OTDM) and code division multiplexing (CDM), both suffering from severe limitations and still immature technology. This paper reviews some major technological developments in architectures, devices and systems involved in WDM optical network evolution and discusses issues dealing with optimal exploitation of fiber bandwidth for information transmission and processing.

We present a working system for real-time tracking of multiple laboratory animals. As it is usually possible to ensure good contrast between the animals and the background, the tracking of a single animal or several physically separated animals can be obtained by relatively simple algorithms. The main problem arises when we try to track several almost identical, uniformly coloured animals during their contacts. To deal with this problem, we utilize dynamic information extracted by estimating sparse optical flow along the object contours. optical flow vectors are used for updating the positions of the tracked contours in a sequence of image frames. The local properties of optical flow enable the system to track the objects during their contact, although some parts of the object contours become hidden. The missing dynamic information is reconstructed by using a model of constant optical flow along an object contour. The reconstructed contours are then adjusted to real object boundaries in the current frame by using an active contour model. The robustness of the tracking algorithm is improved by adding a supervision module, which detects tracking failures and reinitialises the contours that lose their targets. The system has been tested on real sequences with laboratory animals during pharmacological experiments and has been shown to be robust and efficient. Future extensions will include expert knowledge of biomedical and pharmacological experts. The major goal is to build a system that will provide an objective and standardised tool for evaluation of animal behaviour during experiments.

A non-invasive interface to track eye position using digital image processing techniques is under development. information about head and eye position is obtained from digital images. The objective is to develop an interface to detect eye position based only on digital image processing algorithms, free of electrodes or other electronic devices. We propose a method for eye tracking built into five stages. These include: coarse and fine face detection, finding the eye region of maximum probability, map of the pupil/iris location and pupil/iris detection. Using frontal face images obtained from a database, the probability maps for the eye region were built. Only gray levels are considered for this computation (8 bits). The algorithms for face and eye detection were assessed on 102 images from the Purdue database and on 897 images from a video sequence. The face detection algorithm reached a 99% and 100% correct detection rate on the databases respectively. On the same databases the pupil/iris detection algorithm reached 85.3% and 98.4% of correct detection respectively.

We have successfully designed and demonstrated a novel wide angular scan range, large diameter aperture optical beam scanner for ultrafast nanosecond scan setting speeds. The free-space wavelength multiplexed optical scanner (W-MOS) offers powerful scanner features in a compact and simple to build and control package leading to potentially wide spread use of this technology.
