Implementation of wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) in optical networks increased the fiber bandwidth utilization and emerged from the use in point-to-point applications to its current position as the next optical networking technology. There are, as well, other competing network approach, such as optical time division multiplexing (OTDM) and code division multiplexing (CDM), both suffering from severe limitations and still immature technology. This paper reviews some mayor technological developments in architectures, devices and systems involved in WDM optical network evolution and discusses issues dealing with optimal exploitation of fiber bandwidth for information transmission and processing.

We present recent progress in development of liquid crystalline optically addressed spatial light modulator, its characterisation and performances. The spatial light modulator is based on photoconducting polymer - nematic liquid crystal hybrid structure and is used in various configurations of holographic recording and reconstruction. The refractive index gratings arising in a system with photoconducting electrode layer are tilted and phase shifted with respect to the light intensity pattern therefore allowing for an extremely efficient energy transfer between the incoming beams. Depending on optical systems used, several useful optical devices have been constructed by us, like: phase conjugate mirrors, Fourier optical correlators for pattern recognition, coherent light amplifiers, incoherent-to-coherent light converters. Their performances are directly linked with physical properties of used materials and the principal photorefractive mechanism which will discussed.

Applications of Picture Archiving and Communication systems (PALS) in Pathology and Cytology are currently hardly used in the diagnostic process. Here we describe a system that, together with existing equipment, stores data from cervix smears, and aids the physician in the diagnostic process. The system comprises of a scanning system for the specimen and a multi-level storage system partly on disk and partly on optical media. The system adds additional benefits in the diagnostic process while at the same time provides a safe long-term storage and archive of the data. Due to the open nature and the cost-effectiveness of this solution applications of this system can be found not only in cervical cytology but also in pathology or other parts of medicine where image processing or storage is a major issue.

Radio systems and, in particular, RF data link systems are evolving toward progressively more bandwidth and higher data rates. For many military RF data link applications the data transfer requirements exceed one Gigabit per second. Airborne collectors need to transfer sensor information and other large data files to ground locations and other airborne terminals, including the real time transfer of files. It is a challenge to the system designer to provide a system design, which meets the RF link budget requirements for a one Gigabit per second data link;and there is a corresponding challenge in the development of the terminal architecture and hardware. The utilization of photonic circuitry and devices as a part of the terminal design offers the designer some alternatives to the conventional RF hardware design within the radio. Areas of consideration for the implementation of photonic technology include Gigabit per second baseband data interfaces with fiber along with the associated clocking rates and extending these Gigabit data rates into the radio for optical processing technology;optical interconnections within the individual circuit boards in the radio;and optical backplanes to allow the transfer of not only the Gigabit per second data rates and high speed clocks but other RF signals within the radio. True time delay using photonics in phased array antennas has been demonstrated and is an alternative to the conventional phase shifter designs used in phased array antennas, and remoting of phased array antennas from the terminal electronics in the Ku and Ka frequency bands using fiber optics as the carrier to minimize the RF losses, negate the use of the conventional waveguides, and allow the terminal equipment to be located with other electronic equipment in the aircraft suitable for controlled environment, ready access, and maintenance. The emergence of Intelligent I/O (I2O) architecture provides a standard for high-performance I/O subsystems and introduces intelligence at the hardware level. With an embedded processor, I2O adaptors can offload the major I/O processing workload from the CPU and, at the same time, increase the I/O performance. This paper addresses the essential issue in the design of disk scheduling for I2O RAID-0 devices. We explore online real-time multi-disk scheduling for I2O requests and propose highly efficient algorithms to minimize the number of deadline violations and, at the same time, to improve the response times of requests. The proposed methodologies are verified by a series of experiments under realistic and randomly generated workloads. © 2001 IEEE.

The field of microtechnology is an important industrial and scientific resource for the 21st century. There is a great interest in spectroscopic sensors in the near and middle infrared (NIR-MIR) wavelength regions (1 - 2.5 mum;2.5 - 4.5 mum;4 - 6 gm). The potential for cheap and small devices for nondestructive, remote sensing techniques at a molecular level has stimulated the design and development of more compact analyzer systems. Therefore we will try to build analyzers using micro optical components such as micromirrors and embossed micro gratings optimized for the above mentioned spectral ranges. Potentially, infrared sensors can be used for rapid nondestructive diagnostics of surfaces, liquids, gases, polymers and complex biological systems including proteins, blood, cells and cellular debris as well as body tissue. Furthermore, NIR-MIR microsensing spectroscopy will be utilized to monitor the chemical composition of petrochemical products like gasoline and diesel. In addition, miniature analyzers will be used for rapid measuring of food, in particular oil, starch and meat. In this paper we will present an overview of several new approaches for subsurface and surface sensing technologies based on the integration of optical micro devices, the most promising sensors for biomedical, environmental and industrial applications, data processing and evaluation algorithms for classification of the results. Both scientific and industrial applications will be discussed.

Hyperspectral systems have significantly progressed through recent advancements in sensor technology, which have made it possible to collect data with several hundred channels. While these remote sensing technology developments hold great promise for new findings in the areas of Earth and space science, they also present many challenges. These include the need for methods of data reduction, and faster processing of such increased data volumes. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) is one such data reduction technique, which is often used when analyzing remotely sensed data. For example, with land cover classification, most conventional methods require the preprocessing step of dimension reduction, which can be seen as a transformation from a high order dimension to a low order dimension to conquer the so-called "curse of the dimensionality."(1) Scientists typically produce all principal components (PCs) and then select from among them those that have significant information, which could be error prone. Using the so-called "power method," the algorithm finds the eigenvalues one by one, starting from the largest and stopping when a predetermined threshold is reached. This threshold represents the desired amount of information content that corresponds to the computed eigenvalues as a percentage of the overall information content of the image. It will be shown that the algorithm presented in this paper can select accurately and compute only the needed PCs in an automatic fashion. It will be also shown that this algorithm is far more computationally efficient than existing methods.

Fusion of reflected/emitted radiation light sensors can provide significant advantages for target identification and detection. The two bands-0.6-0.9 or 1-2 mum reflected light and 8-12 gm emitted radiation-offer the greatest contrast since those bands have the lowest correlation, hence the greatest amount of combined information for infrared imaging. Data from fused imaging systems is presented for optical overlay as well as digital pixel fusion. Advantages of the digital fusion process are discussed as well as the advantages of having both bands present for military operations. Finally perception tests results are presented that show how color can significantly enhance target detection, A factor of two reduction in minimum resolvable temperature difference is postulated from perception tests in the chromaticity plane. Although initial results do not yet validate this finding, it is expected with the right fusion algorithms and displays that this important result will be proven shortly.

This paper presents an overview of our study on the subject that is categorically termed <>. Microelectronics, as we define it here, is an area of scientific and technological study concerning the miniaturization, interconnection, and integration of photonic devices, circuits, and systems in micron or submicron scale. We examine the scientific and technological issues relating to these matters and discuss the challenges that the microphotonics faces toward the information technology in the 21st century. In the course of this study, we closely follow the experiences of microelectronics side by side, so that they can provide lessons, learnings, and insights that microphotonics can rightfully benefit from in a complementary form. Similarities, dissimilarities, advantages, and disadvantages, merits and demerits of the two technologies are explored in such a way that they can be more effectively utilized by mutual support. Directions for future studies are also discussed with particular emphasis on information technology.
