Video generates a rich set of image information and often the useful information is only a very limited set of the available information. Another well-known fact is that visually reviewing of long video recordings is a rime demanding task. In combination with the continuously increasing number of video surveillance systems, this leads to an increasing need for automated analysis of long image sequences. The goal for this work is to develop and evaluate a method for automatic detection and tracking of events recorded onto a surveillance video, such as appearance of persons or vehicles in a surveyed area, to evaluate the usefulness for forensic applications and real time applications. One core problem is the fact that both the background and the objects move, where only the physical motion of moving objects are of interest and needs to be separated from the camera motion. Another core problem in many of the video processing algorithms is parameter estimation despite invariance for accurate modeling of the desired features. Varying scale, color, lightning conditions and occlusion of the object of interest can for example cause invariance. The technical approaches for this work is to separate global and local motion by analyzing the optical flow constraints. To overcome the problem caused by such feature and object invariance, all pixels are considered independently acid no feature parameters are needed. If the basic optical flow constraint is satisfied, the motion is classified as global motion. If not, the motion is considered caused by local motion, noise or other phenomena. An object that undergoes local motion can then be detected and tracked as is forms a trace in the temporal domain, while the noise appears on an intermittent basis and will be disregarded. The results from applying this method on several image sequences were compared and the robustness and ability to deal with invariance has been evaluated. Mediaprocessors offer several advantages over hardwired MPEG-2 decoder chips, such as the capability to perform multiple functions, update the algorithms and customize the system with enhanced features. MAP1000A is a highly integrated mediaprocessor platform with multiple processing units for parallel processing. The input bitstream is parsed and decoded by the VLX coprocessor, which is a small and fast processor designed for sequential operations. The decoded information is then passed to the VLIW Core that performs the pixel-intensive operations such as the inverse quantization, inverse DCT, half-pel interpolation, pixel averaging, and pixel addition. The VLIW Core's two-cluster architecture with 128-bit data path per cluster and partitioned operations achieves a high throughput on 8-bit and 16-bit pixel operations. Also, to avoid the VLIW Core from waiting for data, a dedicated data transfer engine called Data Streamer moves data between MAP1000A, external memory, and I/O devices in parallel with the VLTCY Core's execution. The MPEG-2 video decoder on MAP1000A is written entirely in the C language, which is a significant advantage over previous processors which required assembly-language programming At 220 MHz clock frequency, the MPEG-2 decoder takes less than 40% of the MAP1000A's cycles. Two MP@ML streams can be decoded simultaneously in real time, with enough cycles remaining to perform other tasks such as the audio and system decoding.

Artificial neural networks are learning systems modeled loosely after the architecture of the brain. These are usually envisioned as a collection of discrete nonlinear processors called artificial neurons with a massive number of artificial synapses connecting them together. A major hurdle, when attempting to build neural networks in hardware is implementing the massive number of these physical interconnections required for all but the simplest applications. As an alternative, this paper describes the development of trainable computational devices in which information is encoded as physical field variables in a bulk material continuum. The response of the physical system field variables is controlled to implement Feedforward Continuum Artificial Neural Networks (CANNs). Nonlinear neuron processing and connectivity are a natural result of the linear and nonlinear physical processes inherent in the bulk material in which the network is implemented. An example is presented below where a feedforward artificial neural network is implemented in a cube of Zinc Selenide, a bulk Kerr-type nonlinear optical material. Numerical models and training simulations of this continuum artificial neural network are presented. Also described are proof of concept experimental results from an optical network built using thin samples of nonlinear optical material.

In this paper some applications of motion analysis are investigated for a compact panoramic optical system (panoramic annular lens). Panoramic image acquisition makes multiple or mechanically controlled camera systems needless for many applications. Panoramic annular lens' main advantage to other omnidirectional monitoring systems is that it is a cheap, small, compact device with no external hyperboloidal, spherical, conical or paraboloidal reflecting surface as in other panoramic optical devices. By converting the annular image captured with an NTSC camera to a rectangular one, we get a low-resolution (2.8 pixels/degrees horizontally and 3 pixels/degree vertically) image. We developed algorithms which can analyze this low-resolution image to yield motion information for surveillance and smoke detection.

Non-linear semiconductor materials coupled to Fabry-Perot (FP) microcavity are promising devices for the implementation of ultrafast and sensitive two-dimensional optical information processing systems such as optical spatial reconfigurable interconnections, coherent optical gate or optical time demultiplexing. A common means of obtaining fast semiconductor modulators is to modulate the dielectric function by exploiting the presence of free photogenerated earners which have a short lifetime. However, these structures require a relatively high free-carrier density and so the high-bit-rate processing is limited by thermal problems. One way of avoiding such problems would be to use non-dissipative physical effects, which although weak can be enhanced using microcavities. In this communication, we present an ultrafast all-optical modulator, based on the optical Stark Effect.

To realize a routing request R on a WDM (wavelength division multiplexing) all-optical network, one needs to set up routing paths in the network for every input-output pair in R and to assign a wavelength to each path so that the paths with the same wavelength are edge-disjoint. The optical bandwidth of the WDM all-optical network is the number of wavelengths supported by each link of the network. If the number of wavelengths for realizing R is at most the bandwidth of the network then R can be routed in one round of routing. However, when the number of wavelengths needed is beyond the bandwidth, multiple rounds of routing are required. In this case, it is important to minimize the number of rounds of routing. We give two deterministic algorithms for permutation routings on the parallel computing systems connected by all-optical multistage interconnection networks (MINs). For the parallel computing systems with practical size, the first algorithm realizes any permutation in two rounds of routing. The second algorithm realizes any bit-permute-complement (BPC) permutation on the n-dimensional MINs in two rounds of routing.

A compact disc (CD) drive rotates the CD whereas the laser head scans in a radial direction to access different locations on the CD. Accessing different locations of a storage device at a fast speed for data handling is limited due to the mechanical inertia associated with these systems. Very high speed optical scanning can be used for rapidly accessing these storage devices to handle data at exceedingly fast rates. We present novel high speed fiber-optic scanning systems far data handling in 2D and 3D data storage devices. The proposed architectures use wavelength tuning to produce fast scan spot beams.

It is natural to use the Internet in telemedicine. So far, some telemedicine systems have been proposed to interface with the Internet. In these system, "off-the-shelf" instruments were used as medical peripheral devices, meaning that a large array of separate devices have to be deployed in an already crowded room. We are currently developing an Internet based telemedicine system. The system has multi-functionality that was realized using virtual instrumentation technology. The Internet was used as a vehicle to deliver the virtual medical instruments and medical data in real time. The system facilitates the extraction of valuable diagnostic information using embedded advanced biomedical signal processing algorithms. We tested the delivery of virtual medical instruments and medical data using pcAnywhere and JAVA applets. In addition, we created a test-bed to send 16 channels of ECG through the Internet using a 300 kpbs cable modem. Our preliminary results demonstrated that the performance of medical virtual instruments is as good as their hardware counterparts because medical signals have low frequencies. It was also demonstrated that the current Internet supports the transmission of real time physiological signals, which provides a vehicle for home based telemonitoring. Compared with other telemedicine techniques, the presented technique transfers not only the medical data, but also the instrument (virtual instrument) and its signal processing capability through the Internet.
