We review some of the relatively fundamental work in the area of optically interconnected digital computing systems. We cover comparisons of optical interconnections with other interconnection media in terms of energy and interconnection density, studies determining the optimal combination of optical and electrical interconnections that should be used, work on free-space optical interconnection architectures, complexity studies, and work on physical and logical system architectures and algorithms. In practice, Multisensor systems use dissimilar sensors having different data rates. Such sensors may also have inherent delays as well as communication delays. Recently the authors developed a track fusion algorithm that attempted to account for realistic constraints of sensor fusion. The objective of this paper are two folds. First, it shows that the synchronous track fusion problem can be derived as a special case of the developed track fusion algorithm. Second, using simulated target tracks, the performance of the asynchronous track fusion (ASTF) algorithm is analyzed and compared to an existing fusion algorithm. Different sensor data rates and communication delays are used in the simulations.

Microdisplay technologies and the opticalsystems which provide projection displays are evaluated. Reflective microdisplay technology provides advantages over the more conventional transmissive and emissive technologies. These microdisplays are typically fabricated with the use of modifications of conventional silicon semiconductor processing and are capable of achieving high resolution and high optical efficiency. Among the microdisplays that were evaluated include large arrays of micromechanical diffractive elements, and liquid crystal electro-optic cells based on nematic, ferroelectric, or polymer dispersed liquid crystal materials.

Determination of vehicle origins and destinations have long been a goal and a tool for traffic planners. Recently there has been an increase in the use of machine vision systems (automatic license plate readers) for determining origins and destinations. The original work in this area involved recording traffic on s-video compatible tape formats (e.g. s-VHS and Hi-8mm). Recently the use of real time analysis of traffic flows has been implemented. This paper describes the implementation of a system to acquire license plate information on the Tacoma Narrows Bridge, in Washington state. This paper presents an approach to image fusion for concealed weapon detection (CWD) applications. In this work, we use image fusion to combine complementary image information from different sensors to obtain a single composite image with more detailed and complete information content. As a result of this processing, the new images are more useful for human perception and automatic computer analysis, tasks such as feature extraction and object recognition. In the fusion process, the images are first decomposed based on wavelet transform. Then at each lower resolution the images are fused by using several feature selection algorithms. The final composite image is obtained by taking the inverse wavelet transform of the fused wavelet coefficients. This technique has been applied to real data obtained from IR sensors. Special emphasis is placed on situations when weapons may not be completely visible from the sensors. Fusion results thadt demonstrate the utility of our approach are presented.

Particle laden flows are encountered in many fossil fuel and industrial processes such as the gas-solid flows in power plants, liquid-solid flows in coal and grain transportation and gas-liquid flows in combustors. These flows are not well understood, thus computational fluid dynamic modeling of these systems has been hampered. Fundamental measurements are required to study the motion of the different phases to obtain an understanding of these flows and to develop reliable models. No reliable non-intrusive methods are available to fully characterize two phase flow fields, i.e. obtain particle size, velocity, concentration and concentration gradients at the same time over an extended area of interest. Intrusive sampling methods compromise the two phase flow field making the measurements suspect. Conventional optical methods (Laser Doppler Velocimeters) do not disturb the flow but provide local point wise velocity measurements only. Particle size can be obtained for only spherical particles using the phase Doppler interferometric methods. Particle Imaging Velocimetry (PIV) is a non-intrusive technique for measuring the velocity of particles entrained in a fluid across a planar cross-section of a flow. A light sheet illuminates the particles at several instances in time and the scattered light is recorded on a CCD array image frame. The recorded image frames can be processed via auto or cross-correlation techniques to determine the average velocity over a regular grid of small sub-regions across the image frame. Alternatively, particle tracking techniques can be used to measure the individual particle velocities. In addition to the particle velocity information, the particle size information is contained in the recorded image. Image processing techniques can then be applied to the image frame to determine either the individual (particle tracking case) or average particle size in each subregion previously used to determine the velocities (correlation processing case).
